When I was still working at a school, they use to have a food drive for the needed. Employees would be coming in with lots of canned goods and the lady who was packing it up in boxes was checking the dates on everything. She was throwing out all the near and best by dates in the trash can. It just made me sick to see all that waste. I wanted to take some out and keep them for myself but I didn't want to be that person that they talked about around the cooler. I also had a friend who only had a few can goods at a time in his cupboard. He never ate any that was past the best by date. It's a shame how much food is wasted in this world. I guess they just never knew what it was to be hungry. Love you Mr. Tom and many blessings to you.💞

What a stress-reliever! To hear someone speak with the voice of sanity! Thank you, Mr Tom! I wish I knew how so many people became so docile and frightened that they would reject the evidence of their own eyes and noses and toss perfectly good food away because of an arbitrary set of numbers on some packaging material. The anecdote I'm about to report has its funny side, but also spooked me out. I was leaving work at the hospital at almost midnight one night, headed down the hall toward the parking lot. An unexpected rain shower started before I even left the building. I didn't have a hooded jacket or an umbrella, so I grabbed a plastic trash bag off the supply rack and wrapped it over the top of my head to get from the exit hall to my car without ending up with a mop of wet hair. Suddenly a co-worker started screaming: "Take that off! You're going to suffocate!!" I could only laugh. Did she truly believe that I would stand in a hospital corridor with plastic over my nose and mouth until I permanently stopped breathing? Making no effort to pull it off? As we all know, warnings about plastic bags are aimed at infants, children, people with cognitive issues, etc. who can't make rational judgments and take action. But she had slid into that "Rules are rules" head and had shut her brain off. Either that or she thought that the trash bag police were going to show up and put me in trash bag jail. Needless to say, I made it out to my car and arrived safely at home about half an hour later. Bless you, Mr Tom, for reminding us all of what it feels like to *think* once again!

I have taught my kids about this.when they were kids once a month we would buy our canned food and in the winter they ate canned fruits and vegetables. Even though their dad has been gone 13 years now they still remember the times when it was feast or famine. They are grown with kids now but still practice the lessons I have taught. So proud of them. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

Back when the cans were made different, my father would clean and cut both ends and flatten the cans. He been gone over twenty years now. The Depression Years changed people way of thinking. He was raised on a farm they didn't go hungry. I will always remember the story of him eating lard sandwiches. Think outside the box. If you are hungry never say never. I would never eat that. You have to sustain life. Water and Food. Thank You. Mr. Tom for your words of wisdom.

Yeah, I ate some 11 and 12 year old Hormel Roast Beef & Gravy out of multiple cans in 2022, and they were all still fantastic. I couldn't even tell any reduction in the quality of the food item. This might not be the case for every food, for example those with more acidic contents like tomatoes, but I think a majority of canned foot items would likely be good for multiple years beyond their best used by dates, if stored in dry, cool, dark environments. Cans without bulges, dents, and rust will likely be just fine. Kudos for putting together such a large long-term food storage. It will serve you well and those with whom you have contact in difficult circumstances.

People who think a date is the determining factor of the safety of eating something or not. Need a heads up, I have opened food that should of had a long time left on it and it was definitely not any good. I have also found old food to be perfectly fine. So a date is more likely to cause sickness in those who think that the date is all that matters. Keep up the good work Mr. Tom. Thanks for all you do for us. Hugs to you and the kitty krew. May God bless you and yours.please

When you talked about fresh fruit not being available when we were growing up in the winter I thought about fruit cocktail, home canned peaches and pears. That is what we ate for fruit. We have had mandatory recycling in our area for years and years now. It isn't so bad just becareful washing out those cans.

I'll be around for supper, Mr. Tom! Hey, I had a cellophane bag of seasoned bread cubes in my pantry, the stuff you buy for making dressing. Date was 2018 and I thought, surely they'll be rancid or something. Nope! Looked fine, smelled great. I've made dressing twice now and it's delicious.

I bought a case of canned butter beans for $3 in 2019 with a best by date of Jan 2020. I just ate the second to last one 3 days ago. They were just as good as the first can. I grew up mostly in the north. Cold winters meant very little fresh veggies and fruit in winter. As kids our stockings at Christmas were filled with grapes, tangerines, bananas etc and we always went for those first.

Greetings Mr. Tom, Thank you for this video. so many need to hear this message. I have c history of buying can goods by the case I have 5 kids.. but they are all off and married or out in the world on their own. So my cans tend to take longer to use. I have never worried about the date I pull older to front newer in the back.. I look smell and heat properly.. but the kids seem to think Dad and I are going to poison ourselves... I tell them that fast food will make them sick faster than my canned goods. I truly appreciate you taking time to Educate others. Mr. Tom you are an amazing person and we appreciate you and all the time you put into your videos for us all. Bless you and Take care. Love from Jenni and Vincent of Southern CO

Good lessons in this video, Mr. Tom. Many people don't quite understand what the best buy date really means and often confuse this date, as you noted, with an expiration date. I had been guilty of this in the past myself. I imagine a good amount of food has been wasted in our country due to this confusion. Glad you are helping to educate folks on this topic. Nice job. Blessings to all.

I've eaten some tuna out of a foil pack a 11/2 old it was just fine. I've eaten stuff from a can 2 years old, it was just fine. I grew up in the 70's in a poor family. We basically got sugar, coffee, flour, salt, pepper and tea from the store and that was it. We fished, hunted, garden and canned everything else. Most people now days don't know what poor is and now that things are getting tight there going crazy.

We all need to go through all our tin canned food, and what we preserve in glass jars in our homes ,as some of it can go bad, lids and rings will rust, and it can and will unsealed, and spoil, better to be safe, and I've also been eating from my pantry, from several years back of canning and buying canned food ,and putting in pantry, the prices of food today are crazy ,but I just don't go to the Walmart or grocery stores ,maybe once a month, then buy very little.ive been through these hard times before in my life time,we can all make now if we try and want too,,but even I have gotten spoiled to the ways of of this living of this day and time ,but I can and will go back to the old way of living, keep my faith in the one that created this big earth,God bless you and the kittys ,you take care,,

I remember the seasonal fresh stuff. Mom would watch the sales on fresh stuff and stock up to put in the freezer. We also grew a garden to eat fresh and freeze the rest for winter. I remember eating canned fruit in the winter until the oranges and grapefruits showed up in January. We ate a lot of fresh fruit in season. And mom would make freezer jam for winter. I also never go by the best buy date eating at home. I don't go canned goods that fast. Some of my tests are making sure the can isn't leaking, the top isn't bulging, and you can't push the top or bottom in and out. If any of that is going on, it doesn't even get opened. In the trash it goes. These days, I push on the can tops even when I am at the store because I accidentally bought a can of meat that when I got home, you could push the top and bottom in and out. In the trash it went. So now I check.

Absolutely agree with you about living off fresh foods all summer and living off frozen or stored harvested food until it ran out and maybe eating some canned fruits. But we also canned all of our food in jars. I remember helping my grabdmom all the time. We canned everything and now as an adult I still continue as much as I can of the old ways. Also thanks so much for mentioning all the flaws that buying store bought cans can cause. I too have been stuck without realizing I bought a can that did the same exact thing where it moved in an MD out the same way and I hadn't noticed at the store. Only I made sure I took it back and got that money back the next time I went. The stores profit from us as consumers way more than they should right now charging people 6 dollars for a pound of their cheapest generic butter while still selling organic for the same exact price they sold it before. Imagine us throwing away food we paid for that was no good when we got it home and never get our money back. Times are very hard my friend. As a suggestion just set it aside in a bag with the receipt by the door, and take it with you next time you go out. I always place things near my front door so I don't forget to remember to bring things with me that need to go in the vehicle. I learned to do thus when I kept forgetting to grab things on my way out. So I leave the items right by the door in a certain spot they can't be forgotten. That way I make an absolute point that even if I paid 50 cents for that bad item. I am sure to be able to get a replacement.

Hello Mr Tom 👋 I just found today a large can of Hanover green beans & potatoes, still in date and the bottom was slightly swollen. I could push on it so in the trash it went. Botulism isn’t worth it. Last year I ate a can of roast beef hash “expired” in 2016. It was perfectly fine. God Bless you

Appreciated your video. Hadn’t thought about the need to dump out contents & inspect the can for corrosion after rinsing. (I’ve always looked for bulging, foaming, and done the sniff test, but hadn’t thought about looking for rust. Or for cloudiness…but that’s kinda subjective depending on what’s in the can.). Thanks for reinforcing what ought to be “common sense,” but which sadly isn’t so common these days.

Hi Tom! Good to see you again! Its been a minute and I hope you are well! We got snow last night and again tonight- it were bout 2 inches yesterday and suppost to be 1 inch tonight- temps were right at freeze and tonight below freezing. I aint got to go nowhere lol Like you I got enough food stored up. Cans, grains, sugar salt etc. The freezer is full and he dehydrator made plenty as well. Just baked a bread and a kind of weet bread with raisins (I dont know the english word for it but its a yeast dough thats being braided then baked) We eat them here with butter and jam or plain. I still buy stuff when I see a good deal like a pound of soup noodles for 29c each and that store had 2 pallets full! Think I bought more than 20 packs and that didnt made a dent lol Prices did go up again here too-flour cost doubble, milk is crazy eggs are still ok compared to yours- 2.69 for 10 bu I gues hats subject to change as well. There are still good deals out there it is up to you to cook accordingly, right! I have rice and fried gizzards, the leftover gizzards I will put a brown gravy with onion over the leftover rice for tomorrow and a few gizzards I will cook in a soup with veg...3 or more days of food with 1 small pack of hicken gizzards for 2.50. And all with canned veg lol Stay safe, stay sane and God bless you Tom!

Hi Tom, so... I honestly did not grow up on can goods unless it was tuna fish. We just did not have them in the house, nor did my kids. Everything was fresh/frozen and very little processed in the pantry. Well, we really didn't have a pantry unless you call pop tarts, crackers, and cookies as the exception. Anyway, since I have been stocking a 2 year pantry, including hundreds of jars of canned protein (learned how to pressure can a year ago), I have never looked at the dates until everyone said something. Never occurred to me. Nope. So, I am not in the habit of worrying. I hear acidic foods like tomatoes and pineapple may be an issue, so I have rotated those. Truth is I cannot eat much of it. I put it away for the people around me that are not paying attention. I did not want to watch them perish in front of me. Hard times are coming. The harvests are bad. Yeah, there will likely be food, if the stores don't close or the distribution channels get disrupted, or the crops do fail to the point of impact. Remember Polish died from famine as their produce was exported. The US is doing the same thing...exporting our goods instead of storing them. Prices will be out of reach for many. Keep doing what you do Tom, but hard times are coming. Peace

Hello Mr. Tom. Good video to remind folks that you don't have to throw it out just because the item is past the Best By date. We recently ate a 7 year old can of Keystone Ground Beef. Today, I was reorganizing and discovered two flats of Whole Potatoes with a Best by of 12/21. Am I worried about eating those canned potatoes. Not in the least. Blessings to you and the Kitty Krew. 🐈💜✝

I had a can of campbell chicken noodle soup dated aug 2015 a few nites ago. 3 cans had been outside in my unheated garage all this time ( for some reason got buried in stuff) freezing n thawing and it was just fine. I DO NOT recommend leaving outside but it is just fine. Assuming other 2 will be too!!!!!!

@@dallwthibodaux4420 it is good and it has a good shelf life too. Great for the times when you run out of store bought bread and you do not want to make a loaf of bread from scratch. And it's great on a cold morning or night with your favorite beverage. God bless. From Glenn CATT in Massachusetts.

It may be a geographical issue, not sure, but…I was born in 1970, and as far back as I can remember, here in southern Ca, our supermarkets, ALWAYS had fresh fruits and vegetables year round. I was born/raised vegetarian. It was consistent, through the 80’s, 90’s,00’s,10’s, and so far, 20’s..I lived and grew up in a small town, not on a ranch or farm.

Rick your right, being in Cali you would have access to fresh veggies all year. But back then it was not the case in many areas of the US.

Air fryer or oven can quickly rejuvenate most stale crackers chips... I air fried Frenchs fried onions that had been opened and tasted flat for a couple of minutes and they were great

Mr. Tom please take those lids completely off. It makes me nervous and if they end up in a dump animals put their heads in there and it klz them. Thank you. Thanks for going over food storage and safety. AK Granny we were discussing the delicateness of the pop tops she did a few days ago. I am having problems with things getting moldy. Even in the regular groceries if a bag of corn chips slides next to a cold drink that small amount of moisture gets a bit of mold in the chips...this never used to happen...I wonder if it is just our poor crop plants are not optimal because they did not have water or nutrients themselves. We just had 3 1/2? weeks of rain here in mid CA. When it does rain I try to keep the heat up to dry the air in general and to keep the condensation barrier outside the walls when the temp.drops.

I do remove the lids, I keep those on because of showing the dates. As for drying the house out. I have to run an dehumidifier here most days because of our high humidity. Check them out on Amazon, one does my whole house.

Im with you on the 70s and how we always practiced being prepared and how bad things were. This young generation doesn’t even know about the fact that there were “homesteaders” (daddy never called himself thst- but he was or before the term was even coined). I like canned goods too! It’s all just good common sense! As always, love seeing another new video. Thank you.

I agree with how they didn’t have fresh stuff until 80s year round. They also didn’t have the Starbucks as you walked in the door and peole walking around with $10 coffee disposable cups in their hands all day long. Lol
