A person who has been vaccinated against COVID-19 will have a slightly different immune response to the coronavirus than someone who was previously infected, researchers say. How long does immunity last-and is it all about antibodies?

I was infected with C19 just before the lock down and was down for a week and recovered. Since then I have been exposed to multiple people with confirmed cases of C19, before I interacted with them, with no noticeable effects. The interesting thing I find is that I haven't been sick at all since I recovered.

Omg!! So i actually believe I contracted the virus in December 2019. I was extremely sick, loss of taste and smell sore throat trouble breathing etc. Obviously I didn’t know what I had because we weren’t informed yet. I do have the antibodies now but because there were no Covid test at the time I can’t know when I contracted it. However, I too have also never been sick again not a cold, a sore throat nothing . I work in emergency response. I come in to contact with the sick all the time. I honestly believe that the natural immunity varies greatly from person to person.

I haven't heard any attempt at explaining why these vaccines wear off so quickly. The interesting thing is that J&J operates on a totally different mechanism than mRNA vaccines yet they all lose effectiveness in less than 6 months. Do the memory cells get amnesia? What happened to giving the immune system that head start against the virus?

First of all, natural infection based immunity also appears to be quite temporary, only slightly longer lasting than the vaccine. And long term effects are unlikely. The mRNA vaccines are only in the body for two to four weeks. Any effects, such as autoimmune disease, are extremely unlikely to develop after that time period. There is no permanent change to your body other than the adaptive immune response. (Unlike drugs that you take every day, which you keep exposing your body to and the damage can add up.) Most of the kinds of things that are confirmed adverse effects from the vaccines are also possible complications from infection with the virus itself, and usually at a higher rate from viral infection. For instance, the virus commonly causes severe blood clotting. It causes heart inflammation at a MUCH higher rate. My medical system has vaccinated 200,000 patients. Most of these patients get their health care exclusively from us. We had two non-life threatening allergic reactions, one transient myocarditis that didn’t require hospitalization, and no deaths from the vaccine. We’ve seen much worse from Covid in the 25% of our patients that are unvaccinated.

You’re not supposed to get a vaccine if you’ve already been sick with the thing you want protection from. This has been known for years. They don’t care about your health obviously. This causes breakout cases because of antibody dependent enhancement. You need to be careful as your immune system could be compromised.

I’m sorry for your loss - that is always difficult. Bear in mind that our bodies are very complex bio-chemical machines, and each one of us are slightly different from one another. We may have underlying (unknown) conditions that react to Covid in a negative manner. Vaccines DO NOT prevent the progression or transmission of disease (Covid, TB, Measles, Polio etc), they train our bodies to mount an immune response in order to reduce the impact of disease on our bodies. Years ago, a relative developed lung cancer and died (he was a lifelong HEAVY smoker). A few years later his widow (also a lifelong smoker) discovered a tumor on her lung, it was removed and she is still active and healthy into her 80’s - why the difference between them? Because we are unique and our bodies respond differently to pathogens.

I’m sorry for your loss. Regarding your question, first, recall that none of the vaccines had 100 % efficacy and second, the efficacy decreases with time. so why bother getting vaccinated? The data suggests the vaccines decreased the chances of getting severe infections or dying due to COVID-19 compared to others who got infected and weren’t vaccinated. Whoever gets infected with the virus can infect others, but IIRC, the viral load (and thus the likelihood of infecting another person) will be less for vaccinated persons.

Hi John Baggus, if you have a fully functioning immune system it will create special cells that manufacture antibodies that target the virus in the bloodstream, at the same time varieties of those B cells mutate to create antibodies for all potential variants of the original virus, this then generates more memory cells that lie in wait for those variants, this is all part and parcel of the ongoing battle between the body and its enemies which has been evolving for all time!. This means that while the vaccination might not confer as good or rapid a response as real infection it will still do enough for most people. What they are finding is that each of us has variations in our capacities, some respond better to some things a than others, some much less, there appears to be a vast range of variation, none of which can be easily identified!, each of us gets what we are given and there is nothing we can do to change that!, nature controls us, we do not and cannot control nature!. Cheers, Richard.

Natural and innate immunity is crucial. Only those with comorbidity and old age do need protection. The rest of the population don't need. With increasing transmissibility the virus become less virulent, this is a biological tradeoff. A virus cannot afford to be virulent, it has to survive and adapt, therefore transmissibility is an adaptation. Please look at recent data of infections and death in African countries and other developing countries with low rate of vaccinations, the numbers are very low compared to countries with high vaccination rate.

Hi Angelo Mascarenhas, as far as I know there is good clinical evidence to suggest that the level of antibodies declines at a steady rate once the infection is cleared, during this period the memory cells will also start to decline and for both the rates of decline depend on the natural characteristics of each individual. For a significant quite large proportion memory cell immunity will persist for many years!, if provoked by a new infection production of new antibodies is very rapid and the whole immunity cycle re-starts. There does appear to be another foundation for claims of reduced immunity, that is more correctly associated with poor or limited immune response, there is a very wide range of immune response in the general population a significant percentage cannot generate effective immune response such that they become very ill and die!, others just about scrape through but remain severely unwell for what is left of their lives and the range goes all the way back to the small number that respond so fast and so well they never even have symptoms. One of the issues raised here is that we have to be able to separate the way different aspects apply to individuals from those we apply to populations, the fact that the impact of diseases like this is described as averages completely ignores the fact that there are very few actual average cases!. Cheers, Richard.

There have been lots of corona viruses that mammals live with, unless you mean the theory that SARS-CoV-2 was a chimera virus made in China in part from the original SARS-COV1. When a claim of immunity dropping off is made its usually referring to antibodies because this part of the immune response is the most readily measured immune component. For many diseases, the memory effect is life long.
