I’m a BJJ black belt and have just officially stated my Judo journey here in UK. I’m very excited. I have years of freestyle wrestling and Jiujitsu takedowns hardwired into me and keep doing illegal techniques though 😢😂 Loving it tbh. Thank you for the video.

Don't worry, I'm a 3rd Dan Judo guy who got his 1st Dan in 1989 - I too keep doing illegal techniques 🤣

As someone looking to get back into the sport (got 3rd kyu at age 11 then stopped training as it wasn't cool in high school) this is super helpful, thank you.

if you were doing judo in the uk as a junior (under 16) you would have had mon grades and would only be able to convert to a kyu grade by being promoted from 16th mon to 1st kyu grade once you reached the age of 15. In other words you didn’t get a 3rd kyu at the age of 11!

Im a bjj blue belt. My trainer was a Brazilian judo black belt and a bjj black belt. I learned a few throws off him. I trained judo for eight months before i went to Brazil to train. Iv thrown black belts more from the fact they were surprised i could throw. They never went easy on me after the first two weeks 😅. My point is don't underestimate anybody by their color of their belt.

I don’t agree always about the time frame . Depends on the individual.

That happens my friend, I know loads of people that have been 1st Kyu's for a long time! May I ask what stopping you from getting your 1st Dan?

@Submission Stories Oh, different reasons really 1) I put uni and work 1st for a while (trust me to pick a uni with no judo club) 2) in the midst of this there was some form of BJA restructure and I was told I had to back to blue belt and had to regrade as a brown belt 3) got married and had kids while working a 40hr week, trying to balance all of this while getting to training is no easy feat (without divorce papers being filed ) 4) fear, I have always been confident with the theory aspect of judo. Even when I wanst training I would droll a technique of the week at home with bands, a dummy or even just myself. During the lockdown training at home alone was not a big thing for me just drilled nage no kata. But I have always been crap with randori. My judo teaching was much the same as others. I started judo, the way most did. Found a club, was tought break falls, osotogari, o'goshi and ipon seionage.... then off you go son. Most sessions followed the same pattern: Rai Uchi komi Newaza randori Then standing randori Then... that was it. Not much teaching. The club I went to was all blue-collar labourers and Royal Marines, so they were very strong, I was 17, 6ft and 12 stone (so was not). Week on week I got hammered. My mam hated it at the time.. Now I still struggle with randori, I keep getting told to keep going and it will click. Still waiting lol. But I'm just frightened I am not good enough and don't deserve it. Anyway I am hoping to go for it in November this year fingers crossed 🤞 Sorry for the long message but you did ask 🤣😂🤣

@@paultaylor107 I did ask so dw haha! Yeah to be honest mate they all seem like valid reasons. The only think I can really comment on is getting better at randori. For me the best improvement happened when I was being very intentional with my randori and not focusing on winning and losing and trying to implement specific techniques or grips (getting better at gripping sounds like something that would massively benefit you too as you mentioned you're technically pretty good, so usually if someone is good at throwing but bad at randori, normally means they're struggling to get good grips but I may be wrong!) Would also suggest investing in stuff on judofantics etc, stuff that you can they try out on resistant opponants in your randori sessions but can drill at home. This is particualrly useful if you feel like you're not getting the best intruction at your club. I hope this helps at least a little bit mate and good luck with getting your Dan grade, and thank you for watching the video!! Let me know how you get on!!

@Submission Stories awsome, thanks What do you mean by "intentional" with randori? Is there anything on judo fanatics you'd recommend ? Funny you mentioned grips, as I would get a grip then get stuck (usually getting stiff armed) and then very quickly get thrown. For this reason I've bought Jimmy Pedro Grip like a champion And also elite judo basics

@@paultaylor107 when I mean train with intention, I mean have a goal in mind (I.e, getting a certain grip) and regardless of what else happens in that round my sole intention is to get the grip I was looking for. I find that really helps me get to strong positions regardless of what my opponent is doing!

Great explenation. Judo does not hand out black belts just for time served as some of the pretend martial arts and we all know what they are .They Giving black belts to 12 year olds dependant on time in art and how high you can kick and if you can break a 10 mm wood board with a kick . OMG
