I'm also Canadian, also started late (38), I'm 40 now and am almost on the exact same timeline as yours. Literally only 1 month difference between yellow and orange. The rest are the same. I think it comes down to how in shape and athletic you are. As long as you're showing up all the time, putting in effort and taking care of yourself it isn't that difficult. I think people who cannot do it, or aren't on that timeline make excuses for their own shortcomings. Strength train, work on your mobility, manage your sleep hygiene and eat well. It's really that simple. If you're not progressing at this rate, it's because you're lacking one of the above. Thanks for the video! Hope I get to black in 5.

I started judo when i was 5 im now 24 and currently going for my 1st Dan, Starting at such a young age means your age gated before you can achieve certain grades (i.e 10yr old for yellow 16 yr old for green) I was at blue belt for 7 years.. as in the UK you need to win 3 fights against your own grade (any weight) every grade after green. This was a struggle for me as i have always been the smallest/lightest in my grading group as weight is not considered. So it takes as long as it takes depending on where you are and how your association works. Im 19 years deep and still going so dont give up😊

That would means once you get your shodan you already have close to two decades in the sport, thats a lot of skill. Osu!

As someone from Montreal who is looking to start Judo in the next few weeks (just looking for a school), and who comes from a Karate background, I can agree that 5 years is not too fast. Generally 5 years is the length it takes for a black belt in Karate as well. You nailed it on the head when you said that black belt is a starting point, not an advanced level. In Japan and Okinawa, black belts are not seen as special. They just mean you've figured out the basics and now your advanced training will begin. When people have asked, I'll tell them white belt to black belt is like grade school, figuring out the basics. The first 2-3 Dans are like high school, getting some more advanced knowledge. 4-5 Dan is like college, starting to specialize your knowledge, and then 6th Dan and up is really working on university towards your doctorate.

Absolutely, whereas in bjj its different, its all about the skills. Hence 10 years is usually the time line .
@daeusmarquis

Agreed. The target of the belts are different. I would liken a blue/purple belt in bjj to something more akin to a brown/black belt in judo/karate martial arts.@@OGFITNESS

Cool video dude!!!Congrats for your black belt in judo and don’t feel so old for getting it at age 44, because I’m trying to get mine at age 50.However, I should have taken it when I was 17 but only got to the 2nd kyu and had to stop due do college and got back only last year at age 48. At the time I’m living in Japan and there are 2 ways to get the black belt: 1) Do the “nage no kata” and win at least 3 fights in 2 tournaments (you get the 1kyu in the first and then shodan in the second) 2) Partake in a local competition and get to the final and finish in first so you won’t need to do the “nage no kata”. I partook in this competition this year in April but only won 2 fights due a torn knee ligament, that made me lose by “hansoku make”, thing that never happened to me. This month there will be another competition and I expect to get my black belt.I’m also getting my black belt in aikido. Keep it up!!

Oh sweet! Get it brother! Thats very interesting, here you can get a black belt by not even having to win a fight in competition, i kinda like that you you have to win 3 fights do the kata or jush smash everyone and its yours! W that said i think the kata has value now that i did it, but having to do it for the exam is a pain in the butt. Having it part of a your judo practice in bits and peace during class would be interesting.

Hey, its good timing I saw your vids. Im in my early 40s and Im planning on leraning Judo; mainly for self defence. I do have experience in TKD, Karate and Boxing, but it's been almost 7 years since I did any serious martial arts training. Im located in Ottawa and I've read there are some good Judo clubs here. Btw, your vids are AWESOME buddy! VERY INFORMATIVE indeed :).

In the US there's three levels of brown. Not too sure about Canada, but I think it makes more sense how Canada does it, since you get a new colored belt per each kyu rank.

Interesting, for kids because they cant get their black until 16?
@JuanVasquezhasreturned
@JuanVasquezhasreturned 2 ай бұрын
@@OGFITNESS Maybe, but even for kids they still have to get through the three levels of brown before receiving their ShoDan rank. Kids get 2 more belts than adults, which is the Orange Belt between the Yellow and Green Belt, and they also get the Purple Belt, which is between the Blue and Brown Belt.

So do judo clubs that are affiliated with IJF / USAJudo require people to compete to advance to black belt? Or is that optional?
@OGFITNESS
@OGFITNESS 8 ай бұрын
Not sure how it works in the US but here in canada theres two ways to go about it, competitive route or technical route, 1st one you need to compete, usually for team members or peeps in the process of competing to get on the team, the 2nd no need to compete but would take longer if you dont.

How does the point system work in competition? Do you earn 10 points for each win against brown and black belts?
@OGFITNESS
@OGFITNESS 7 ай бұрын
If memory serves it like 5 pts for registration to a comp, 10 pts for ippon, 5 pts for wazari, i think whether you score on a brown or black belt its the same amount of points, it might have been different in the pass, it is written in the brackets who you won or lost to by what but it doesn’t affect the points. When you get your brown belt your only fighting browns and black belts anyway.

Not judo, but a judo/karate hybrid system I train and teach. Our structure is very similar to judo and 5 years is an acceptable timeframe to first dan. Remember First dan means you know the basics, it doesnt mean your an expert, originally in judo, students went from white to black with nothing in the middle. I wouldnt get too caught up on rank either, the knowledge is for yourself, your physical belt means very little, learn for self development, and as long as your continuely progressing, youll be good.

I think once you get the black belt then the real learning begins, but if you stop at black its such a waste.

@@OGFITNESS couldnt agree more, I have 3 of them, and im by no means a great fighter, but I enjoy training, and know the basics of what I practice very well. My intention was never to be a great fighter, I enjoy training for what it is, a way of maintaining disciple, developing myself and hopefully helping a few other do the same.

I wonder if a brown belt is technically the same as a black belt (shodan) because you mention before that it is all about kata's
@OGFITNESS
@OGFITNESS 8 ай бұрын
Id say very close, can even be better in some cases, the black belt is suppose to have a more complete understanding of the fundamentals, and basics. I was winning against black belts as a brown belt in competition in my division, a lot of the guys where asking me “ dude, when are you getting you black belt already?” Ill make a video on why i think people should get their black in judo

I agree with you that 5 years is a reasonable time to reach a black belt. It is all about how much effort you put into it. I started judo and next month, Im testing for yellow. I do 4 classes a week, and I do train home. I used to lift before that and practice muay thai. Physicality will help you to recover and adapt faster. They say you need to practice 10'000 hours to be a master.
