@@user-kq5qp6dh8l I bought an Altarwind, as that's the closest luthier in my area. Lots of people will have a lot of input if you join one of the main Hurdy Gurdy facebook groups or reddit groups. @@michalina_malisz Oh great!!!! can't wait to see what you've done. I think you'll cover the main subjects in your videos. But if i have to tell, what i would like to learn in those videos, i'll say... - Learning the basics of the instrument (how to operate it, how to setup coton and rosin, how it works and how to maintain the instrument) - Learning the approach of the trumpeting movement, and getting decent notes out of the instrument. (not necessarily a full in depth tutorial but basics) - Some little tips you can provide to us as an experimented Gurdist, and some little exercices that can help to improve (again not necessarily very complex exercices) :)

However, like Sergio said, I am crazy and I really want this. I've adored this crazy ass instrument for the last 10 years. For effs sake, I even do air gurdy in the car. I heard a story from a friend of mine who went to Ireland to study with an old gentleman born into a famous musical family who had been playing fiddle since he was old enough to hold the instrument. He was, at the time of this lesson, well into his 90s. At one point the two players just sat and were quiet together. Then the old gentleman said, "I feel like I'm finally starting to get it..." This isn't meant to discourage anyone from taking up any instrument, but to say there is ultimately no end to learning any skill, especially musical skills. For me, having only a tiny bit of experience as a child with piano and guitar, and as an adult in my late twenties with a $7 tin whistle, prior musical chops were not part of my start with the gurdy. But I have ridden horses and motorcycles and both of these require a lot of complex decision making, a willingness to go where the physics and moods of your mount take you and extricate yourself safely if there is danger, and (most of all!) an ability to study and to learn. Weirdly, these two skill sets are the basis of my musical career. It also helps that I play with an extremely competent and gifted partner who is whole heartedly supportive of my journey and even stated outright that I had to have a gurdy! I've been playing thirty years and, except for a one-time "here's how you set it up, tune it and here's how you should hold your hands and body" the day after I got my instrument, I was basically on my own for the first ten years or so. I had dropped myself into the deep end of the pool and was performing with my gurdy about a week or ten days after I first got it for which I am now both grateful and horrified. If I had had time to sit at home and obsess over it I likely would have never left the house! So that was a good thing. However, partly because of the repertoire I was using the gurdy for and lack of instruction from a good teacher I didn't make progress on the trompette until about fifteen years ago. Thanks to Tobie Miller and Gilles Chabenat, who I was so lucky to study with at the late and lamented Over The Water Hurdy Gurdy Festival, there was a dent made in my ignorance and I've been working on it ever since. I'm still crap at it but still! Progress! For me gurdy is a spiritual study as well as a musical endeavor. Playing them has made me a more patient, kind and careful person for which I am deeply grateful. I still struggle now and then, especially with the newer of my two gurdies, but my old one, a Hubbert Volksgurdy, is more than a tool, it's a true friend and companion, a way to reach people musically and emotionally that I never, ever anticipated, and I would be lost without it. I consider myself a beginner/intermediate player and I know I will spend the rest of my life trying to do better by this marvelous instrument. There is nothing else like it and I am so grateful to have fallen into this life, and to have so many wonderful people playing it, too, to turn to for help, inspiration and comfort. Thanks for this wonderful video!

I'm so happy about how helpful the hurdy gurdy community is! According to Sergio, I'm one of the crazy ones hah. The Nerdy Gurdy is my first real instrument (excluding my jaw harp lol) and I recall almost nothing from the music lessons everyone at my gymnasium (the school-type not the sports building haha) had to partake in. I've been playing for about a month and even though I already managed to rip the high drone string twice while tuning, I'm making progress and am determined to become better! Michalina, thank you for providing great gurdies that don't cost more than an entire month's wage! I'm looking forward to order from you once I feel confident that I won't break anything delicate and I reach the limit of my Nerdy Gurdy (I'm not the best at woodworking, so I think I built in a slight scratchiness into the high melody by mistake :c)

How are you now, 6 months later friend?
@Crotaro
@Crotaro 2 ай бұрын
@@sgoodman72 Hey there! I would say I'm so-so at reading notation and pretty good at finding the right key when I think about playing a certain note. I can play short melodies (like 30 - 60 second segments of a longer song) from memory depending on how much repetition there is in it. And I can do some of the trumpette coups, although I'm still struggling to be consistent while playing a melody simultaneously. But I should also admit that I'm only practicing maybe an hour or two per week right now, as quite a lotta stuff is going on that keeps me busy. I think my biggest issue right now is the proper maintenance and troubleshooting when some notes sound off, which kinda kills my mood for practicing.
@sgoodman72
@sgoodman72 2 ай бұрын
@@Crotaro Thanks for the update, ive been looking for comments from folks just jumping into it - as I am thinking about beginning myself (with only a limited musical background). Would you say that the maintenance and troubleshooting really hinders entry and is a barrier to success? Or is it just more annoying than anything, but you still know how to do it? My biggest worry isn't learning how to play, it's more not knowing how to properly maintain and tune the instrument itself. Thanks
@Crotaro
@Crotaro 2 ай бұрын
@@sgoodman72 That's a good question! As I mentioned in my original comment, I began learning by using the Nerdy Gurdy, which I assembled myself. The maintenance part on the Nerdy Gurdy is, I would say, alright and doesn't present that big of a hindrance to your fun in playing (if you didn't mess up during the initial construction phase). I relatively quickly noticed when a slightly eh-sounding note wasn't because of improper tuning or something but because I had reached the limits of the Nerdy Gurdy (because, y'know, I'm not a master woodworker, so little errors accumulated during assembly). Don't let that dissuade you from seeing if you like the instrument by going with the Nerdy Gurdy first, though! The 350€ really can't be beaten! If you're lucky, you might have hurdy gurdy events near you where you can try out playing the gurdy, too! That said, I did buy a restored gurdy from 1970 and while I see that it does have much higher potential, I also noticed that I can't anymore quite figure out how to fix, for example, the high notes sounding screechy. I think that's because I'm not used to the much more delicate treatment this professional gurdy might require. I signed up for an online gurdy maintenance workshop later this month for 30€ or so. I'm hoping to find the source of my issue there with the help of a pro. So I guess you could say I'm still very much determined to learn the gurdy? :D

I just got my first gurdy and am loving it (53 years old) I've wanted one for about 20 years and finally got one. almost no musical experience and am pretty much playing for my own entertainment. I'm still just getting comfortable with where my fingers go without making tortured hamster noises but still,,, I enjoy every moment I spend cranking the thing. The mechanical side of maintaining/tuning the gurdy for me is part of the joy of ownership and playing it but I also fly RC helicopters and those little suckers are picky about set up. TL,DR, If the hurdy gurdy really calls to you get one, you won't regret it. I hope to get a really good one from a reputable luthier after I get decent with my current gurdy. Learning more and more what I want. Individually adjustable chanter/melody string bridges are really nice for instance.

Hey, I'm so happy you found this video helpful! :) Hurdy gurdies are rather on the more expensive side, even simple instruments cost about $1000, some can cost less, but it's still a few hundred bucks to let go of. More advanced instruments cost from about $2000 up. At my gurdy store you can get the basic model for $1885 (2 melody strings, 2 trompette strings, 2 drones strings) + shipping cost (including flight case) for example. What I'm scaring (or afraid) about is that I taken the electric (or electronic) option... and to be honest, I don't know if I made the good choice, because I want to play it, like the medieval musicians, without electricity, too... as free... After more than 1 month to have paid, is it again time not to take that option... ? I hope to have made the good choice... if not, i feel so scaring... I've paid by Ancestore.pl and Helvetion you're in relationship with them... So, I ask you for that...

I see this is 4 years old but i still hope i can get some help. I been thinking of getting a hurdy-gurdy for 3-4 years now but the price always scared me and how i might not be good at it and it would be a waste of money. So i would love some help whit just finding a good, cheaper then 3000 euros and pretty hurdy-gurdy. Also this would be my first instrument and i don't have a way to get help since there is no one on my city or country probably who has even heard of this. Thank you

do you have any ideas for what resources I might use if I can't find a teacher which seems like will be the case as I'm in Ohio USA

First thing I'd recommend is joining the two fb groups I posted in the description, there's a lot of resources/tutorials created by professionals and it's easy to search for them + you can always ask the community. Everybody there is willing to help. :)

I think it always takes a few months longer than it should take, because there's always a waiting list for good instruments.

Never played anything, and probably not gonna learn playing hurdy gurdy either, so building it to play itself. It's anyway more about building it than playing it.

I just picked one up. This model thing for about 50€ from Ugears, since this is the first instrument I'm learning, after drums and singing that is i wouldn't want to purchase a good one for 1000€+ to maybe get a feel for it or not. I play for 2 days on the cheap hurdy gurdy now and I'm getting quiet confortable, even though it sound... not good. Would you advice to buy 'a real one' as soon as possible to prevent bad habits or to get a better feel for the tones since mine sound rather... not so good.

Why do ALL Gurdy players "Unconsciously" fiddle with their strings? At 7:38, you picked up one melody string and moved it. LOL WHY?
