my grandpa was a polyglot and one thing he always used to say was that you have to treat learning a language as if you are a baby. when babies are learning to speak they listen and repeat. they string words together, even if their sentences aren't correct/don't make sense. this is how i study languages. when you know a few words and grammar points try stringing a sentence together. it doesn't have to be perfect, but that gives you the opportunity to learn! it's all about the small steps hoenstly.

I've been studying Korean for almost 4 months now and I've noticed that my reading or understanding is going 3 steps ahead everything else for example If I want to say "I go home by bus" I can't build the sentence in my mind to say it out loud but if i see it written I know it says that. I guess I need to invest more time in active listening exercises and do some changes in the way I'm currently studying.

@@haitangweiyu So true! And outside of second languages, children who are not yet verbal understand more than they can speak initially. People often think toddlers don’t know what they mean, but just because they can’t repeat it, doesn’t mean they don’t understand! I also read that many children who learn 2+ languages simultaneously in their household, typically take longer to speak aloud than kids learning one language!

Hey everyone out there who are struggling to learn Korean! Well, im also a beginner but what if i tell you it's been 3 months ive started learning Korean, and ive already mastered Hanguel, and memorized 150+ words. So first things first, before starting to learn any language, remember, it will take time. It won't end in a year or so. It is a really long journey, so you need to keep this in mind, it's okay if it takes time. And secondly, you will need to improve your observation skills to learn fast. Now, some of the tips which i hope, will be beneficial are here. 1. Hanguel: Don't rely on a single source. Try to avoid romanization and find an equivalent sound in your native language (if you're a non native English speaker). Also to find out the exact sound, listen to songs and observe how they pronounce it. 2. After hanguel, i recommend to learn words rather than jumping on to grammar rules. Also, start with simple catagories of words which you need in normal conversations. The sequence in which i learned is : Numbers, colors, time, body parts, shapes, clothing, greetings, and so basic nouns and verbs. Also, while im listening to kpop, i learned many random worlds like "sesang"(world) "saranghe"(love you) "uri"(us) "bigida"(tie), etc. Also, watching kpop and kdrama help a lot in enhancing vocabs as well as pronunciation. I use "Avocard" and "Infinite Korean" to enrich my vocabs. If you can make use of it to the max, i bet they are the best free apps for vocabs. Don't compare your learning progress to other leaners, but to yourself! Compare how you were X months/weeks/days ago and you'll be amazed every single time how well you've improved. Good luck!

@@riya-sv1rh I learned Hangul in 3 days but I would use the romanization for a full week before I could make assumptions on how I would spell it in Korean. I know so many words now, that I forget the basic stuff like colors and animals but what helps me remember is vocabulary cards and children’s songs. I like fun ways to study and help memorize what I learn. It took me about 6 months after learning Hangul, to get the beginner stuff down but I still review every now and then.

I have been learning korean by myself for a few months, and i'm doing really good at understanding, i just need to work more on forming sentences quickly by myself. For me, the key to learn quickly is consistency and not stressing over it. If you see language learning as a chore, then i think it's gonna be harder to memorise and learn.

recording my voice and listening to how it sound is something sadly I cannot do, as I live in a house with thin walls and my housemates are strangers and I don't want to be ridiculed, but I did thought about it and sounds like a good practice. My worst nightmare in korean language will be shortcuts, words or expressions that are made short and are not in official books.

Yes you can! I used to care so much of what others thought of me when I told them I studied Korean. Not anymore. Are you afraid that because your pronunciation is bad they will laugh at you or are you afraid that they will find out you are studying Korean? For the first one, everyone starts as a beginner, there’s no way to improve if you don’t practice. For the second one, I am pretty sure they won’t care too much, and even if they do, is it really worth it? You not improving your language skills because of them? Let them lose their time while you do something productive and enjoyable 😄

words and expressions not in official books. you can get exposure to those by dramas or reading webtoons. i dont have time for dramas so i read webtoons and watch game shows lol (i dont mind leaving off in the middle of a game show but i cant stand not finishing an episode) adding to the other commenter. if youre afraid to be judged for learning korean. i went through that too. i studied in secret for 6 months!! then i got so obsessed i quit caring. at first i was judged, but now those same people are just impressed at how much i was able to learn on my own. they once judged me and still low key do, but they also have to acknowledge what i accomplished. once i came out and quit caring, i took down some walls i had up and made a loooot of improvements. recording yourself is better so you can HEAR where you are going wrong, but it helps to speak outloud even if you dont record it. so whisper to yourself for now :) your roommates wont hear you and youll still imrpove. i hope you eventually get the courage to record yourself though~

This is my 3rd year in a row studying korean and I can tell you this from my pov: it is hard and sometimes it frustrates me because i know all these grammar rules but it's like it's a bit difficult to know how or when it's the appropiate time to apply them. But it's a learning process and I'm just so happy thay I had the encourage to start. I get better everyday and that's amazing to me :) Ps: i swear sometimes i have dreams with kpop idols and i actually have conversations in korean 🤣🤣🤣

Then you lived in an expat/foreign district like the most? I mean... really? Very hard to believe for me. I learned 2 years at home, around 6-10hours per Week, went to korea for littlebit more than a year - not seoul, very important - no foreign friends and so I was forced to learn that language that I understand basically everything and speaking wise I'm able to hold non science conversations. And I'm also a very slow learner, never understood english in school but if you are forced to speak the language because there are no other people... I only heard those 3years stories by people who lived in foreign districts so never saw the real -non seoul - culture (because seoul is super different to the rest of korea) no offense tho.

Honestly I'm so glad I decided to click on this video because I've become so self-conscious about my journey with Korean recently. I've been studying on and off for 9.5 months and I really want to improve because I love the language and I want to be able to help my Korean students better but when I see other people at other levels in their own journey it makes me feel like I'm not doing well enough. I love this video so much. It’s so important to look to others for inspiration or support and understanding but expecting to be able to have the same language journey as anyone else isn’t possible. Some of those people may know other languages and pick up things easier, some may have the opportunity to study abroad, or they have a different learning technique than you, or they don’t work as much as you or have as much responsibility as you do in a day to day. Just know that there’s a language you’re taking the time to learn. Enjoy it, pace yourself and have fun.

I've been learning Korean on and off for the past 12 years. I only started seriously studying last year and I started to see significant progress. This year, I jumped in with both feet and enrolled myself to italki classes. Not seeing "tangible" improvement can really sap your motivation, but it really pays to be patient, persevere and stay consistent. Learning a new language takes time, not just a week or a month. Thank you for your videos I really love them!! At first honestly I really wanted to speak korean because I wanted to speak fluently and to watch K-dramas without subtitles. But for me building sentences are too complex and hard especially I don't have a native Korean friends. So instead of stopping from learning korean, i used this knowledge so I can sing Korean songs (although i'm still careful because it might sound different from the lyrics) and to read packagings with Hangeul.. Im contented for that and i'm already happy

Like she said everyone is different! I would suggest taking the VARK questionnaire online. You'll find out your preferred learning style if you answer it 100% truthfully. Then you can adapt your study methods to your style. I've lived in Korea for 8 years now, and I've picked it up rather naturally. BUT I have foreign friends that have lived here more than me and their Korean is still just survival level.

I’m on the five year plan myself as a forty something adult. With a vocabulary of about 500 you can technically start talking but you need a patient partner and it really helps if you can switch to English a little if needed.

I get this question too! People always comment on my videos asking how many months it takes to reach a certain level and stuff and I'm like....you do know it's not a specific formula like oh every 3 months you move up a level....that's not how it works! Realizing that I was on my own journey, my own path, and my own speed and not comparing myself to other language learners was the BEST thing I learned during my language learning!

Exactly~~ Also you have no idea the amount of studying they're putting in or the quality of study~ 3 months of meeting with a private tutor is going to give you different results than 3 months of self-studying grammar from a book~

Your philosophy on only using the characters and not just using romanization applies to Russian, Chinese, Thai, Kazakh, and many other languages. The way I approach questions about how long I've been learning a language is: I don't say day, weeks, months, years, I say, "oh only a few hours in, I'm taking my time" Korean is a level 5 language for English speakers, meaning they expect it to take around 2200 hours of studying to become fluent. Yes I've been studying for over a year, but I've got maybe 200 hours in total study time.

Some of the things that has been helping me is just replacing english words with korean. I also learned how to say - i only know little ( language). Another thing that has been helping is sticky notes on things i use daily. Like i have a sticky notes on the door, above my bed, next to my chargers, on the coffee pot, above the sink, by my toothbrush and so on.

The best practice of learning a language is to be in the environment of said country. This is because forcing yourself to learning said language as a method of survival, because if you don't, you will not survive. This serves as a HUGE motivator and the spark to kick off your learning in overdrive. You have to be out of your comfort zone and pushed into the corner. Like the saying goes, necessity is the mother of all inventions.

Each time Natalia make a video she becomes my favourite language youtuber. Personally, there's times I can do from 1 to 3 (ranges between 30min to more 1h) of studying with TTMIK, each day every day, for more than a month, but there's times I'm so overwhelmed by life that I put aside korean and keep it in standby for more than month. I really need to keep my motivation up otherwise i will never get through this journey:/

When I feel down or not wanting to study I use an app like LingoDeer even if it's just for 15 minutes in an entire day or I will listen to some Korean music just to keep the language present as part of my life or daily routine until I feel better to actually study.

I see nothing wrong with taking a break, the brain does its job storing information the right way, ready for you to retrieve it when you are ready. Learning a language requires time so, giving it time to settle it's a good idea.

All I can say is: Don’t give up Like it gets easier, I would feel so unmotivated because I would create my own sentences and they weren’t correct. Then I would just cry😭 But the best feeling ever is when you finally make the correct sentence with the grammar structure. Also, I found the Korean number system and all the different counters so confusing at first, but the more you expose yourself to it, the more you understand. To anyone reading this: Keep going!! 화이팅!!

This is my first time actually, truly learning a new language. I'm one that I have to go slow, I found some great textbooks, many videos, a couple apps. I have been working on Hangul for about a month and half. I still stuggle with a few vowels. It's about the journey, and it's true everyone's journey is different ❤❤❤

It took me that long to learn hangul, I thought I was the only one ! I'm dealing with the vowels by listening to my favourite OSTs. By memorising those words, I have something to give me a connection to them and thus to remember. Today, I've come across this one: ㅒ in 얘기해줘요 - yaegihaejwoyo . At first, I panicked because I couldn't see it on the keyboard. So, yes, take it easy, learn them by using words, otherwise the process will be even too slow.

I sometimes get really stressed because I need to be at a TOPIK level 4 a year from now (I've already been studying for about a year but it hasn't been super intensive because I'm also taking 19 units at uni) and it also took me a really long time to find my learning style. I leave for Korea in about a month to do a summer program (it's in english but I'm also taking intermediate korean courses) but one of the biggest issues I have is trying to find vocabulary that suits my studies. Basic university lingo is easy to find, but I'm a biochemistry major with emphasis on public health. I'm trying to pursue an MD-PHD hopefully in Korea (hence the need for a high TOPIK) but finding reliable sources with correct terminology for things like "heart attack" or "PCR synthesis" has been extremely difficult. I know most people don't need to know that, just like I don't really need to know about engineering or basket weaving (idk haha), but since it's my career and study focus, I talk about it a lot. I'm expected to talk about it a lot. I'm worried my dream of studying long term in Korea will be ruined because I can't figure out how to study these terms (Also beginner grammar was fairly easy to pick up but as I'm going further along the grammar is getting super confusing) If anyone has advice on either of these things, I'd appreciate it!

Just yesterday I watched ep.15 of Dr.Romantic and someone died of heart attack and a lot of PCR was used as well on ER patients. You can check the terms in it, very useful. Not Netflix, only Viki. I believe a specialist dictionary is in use for any language, whether it's your own or not, have a look on the market for it.

One hour two times a week is a lot. I do 10 minutes a day with an app, I find it difficult but I started to spot more and more words while watching dramas so I get a buzz from it. It's not that I don't want to do more, I can't, I get bored and lose motivation. I think I want to run before I can walk - so to speak.

@@whitneystephenson5313 - Today, I decided to stop using it, tomorrow I'll be starting on TTMIK on KZbin. The reason being, the app was good to start me off but on checking it against Papago and Goggle translate, it has too many mistakes. I'm watching now The King Eternal Monarch on Netflix - useful as the Korean subs are in big on the screen, I copy them on Papago and learn new words. I'm still at the stage where I need to learn a lot of words, my vocab is too poor to do anything with it.
