for me personally, writing notes help me grasp the information. most of the time, I will read something and not obtain anything from it. however, when I actually read through it and re-write it, I find myself remembering the information better. I don't write everything word-for-word, but I basically create my own notes for better understanding.

Same here, it’s like I’m teaching myself as my ideal teacher through my own words in the way I best PERSONALLY comprehend. I’m basically just solidifying my own understanding in terms I learn from, rather than whatever context I’m learning from. Like my adaptation. PLUS all the info I’m learning is in one concise place, since I study from different sources.

I agree with not taking notes unless it’s absolutely necessary. I’ve been learning Chinese in class for about 9 months now. I don’t take notes at all, and I’m easily one of the top performers in the class. Obviously, it might be easier to not take notes with Chinese instead of Korean because the sentence structure is fairly similar, but honestly, I feel like all you need to do is listen to or watch videos when you hit difficult grammar points and you’ll be fine. I recently applied this method with Korean and my Korean has improved so much in just days. I’m easily learning 5-15 words a day through Korean music alone, and I’d probably learn more if I started watching k dramas. Humans are hardwired to acquire language no matter how impossible it seems. Native speakers might’ve taken classes that focus on their language as a whole which helped them improve, but they definitely did not come out of the womb with a pen and notebook in hand lol

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who doesn't take notes. I found early on in my Korean studies that I spent too much time writing notes when 9/10 I would just go back to the original source to read the explanation again. I do keep a word document of sentences that have a grammar pattern that I still need to memorize.

in defense of note taking, i think it can be helpful to have your information in one place when you’re pulling things from several different sources. at least for me, if i’m using multiple websites and videos, i like taking notes for the sake of taking all the best parts of those sources and having one succinct place to find it, instead of having to go back through all of them.

Absolutely agree! I used to be one of those people who'd take so many useless notes but eventually realised that we should focus on training our brains to acquire grammar, not learn it. It's useful to briefly read some explanations, a few example sentences, but once you know what the grammar structure does, the best thing is to just start immersing and hearing it used in context.

Because it changed my language learning life, I think anyone learning a language should know about the idea of language acquisition. It was introduced by Steve Kaufman a couple decades ago. Him and his colleagues found that their students learned best when they understood the message, not necessarily the words or grammar, of what was being said in the language they were learning. I can't explain the whole concept here, but basically, acquiring a language (versus learning one) puts very little emphasis on studying grammar or flashcards. The idea is that you learn from context as you interact with media (books, articles, movies, etc) or people in your target language.
@izba5747
@izba5747 2 жыл бұрын
While i respect Steve immensely, he's talking about the stage when you've already built a nice grammar and vocabulary foundation. Then of course, working with a living and breathing language is more beneficial in developing context intuition. It doesn't work till you get to intermediate level.

If anyone feels overwhelmed using HTSK, start with the lesson on TTMIK and then go to HTSK for the examples! I currently go through TTMIK and then if I’m not solid, I’ll pop over to HTSK and read/note down example sentences I feel are useful for me. Anything you think you won’t use yourself, don’t bother with it! I’m still struggling to get use of the stuff I’m learning but that’ll come with time haha.

I'm studying Korean but have taken zero notes so this was nice to hear. I've never been able to take notes for a long time (really makes my hand hurt cuz I write so hard) and I have a habit of not looking back at them anyways. Plus I figure if I have to commit it to memory anyways so may as well get to burning it into my brain as fast as possible:P Plus notes make it feel more like work and I try to keep it fun so I stay motivated.

I just started learning Korean and my note taking practice is already quite out of the ordinary. Normally I take shortened notes from my resource (ttmik at the moment) and after a couple of days I rearrange and shorten them to the minimum and then write them down in my little "cheat book". Since I learn the best by writing everything down a thousand times it works great because I "copy and paste" the most important key points from the lessons multiple times and can look them up easily later on without having example sentences or unnecessary explanations in between. Anyone else having unusual note taking habits?
@NataliaGarza
@NataliaGarza 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm interesting haha Whatever works best for you!! haha
@dyastro7479
@dyastro7479 2 жыл бұрын
Thats not unusual, if you look around youtube a bit in the note taking/how to study genre on vids, like thomas frank or etc; you would find out that thats a ABSOLUTELY CORRECT way of taking notes. Taking what u just read/listen to/learned and rearranging it and simplify it and condensing it in a way that works best for you. That wat way u dont have to go back to the textbook, cause i gpt all the important stuff summarized and laid out in ur notebook, and dont have to read the whole paragraph to get the context. Just writing things down hasn't been proven to help with memorization, its analyzing, annotating, and then writting them down in a different and more helpful to yourself way that helps. THATS how to take notes. U are essentially making a study guide for yourself, and since YOU made it from scratch, u are much more likely to understand and remember. Since you had such an active role in its creation. Just annotating in a textbook that someone else wrote wouldn't usually work well. Since u didnt write the book, its easy for info to slip thru the cracks. I feel like the youtuber doesnt quite realize that notetaking isnt about copying what was said. Thats NOT taking notes, thats just copying/repeating. You have to actively, or (much better) eventually simplify/rearrange the info u learned. They have a whole essay of info? You make a table/chart/or bullet point of the important stuff that was said. I personally like to read a section/paragraph/etc first, then read again but this time higlighting or taking note of the important stuff (this is were u would just copy what was said, but its at least just the important stuff), then take all of those notes and remake them in a much better, simplified, and organized way that helps YOU understand and remember. What i like to do after that as review, is since i simplified it for myself, i have a much better idea of what a certain section was about, and so i would be able to give someone else the run down of it too. If you cant essentially "teach it" or explain it in a simple/general way to someone else (especially someone who knows nothing about the subject) then you maybe dont really understand as much as u thought. That this takes practice, lots of analyzing, and review. But starts with the good notes. I like to pretend to be teach someone else. It helped me more times than i could count in understanding concepts. Depending on how hard a subject is for u to learn/understand/remember, the more rewriting/rearranging/simplifying of what was said u may have to do to ensure u "get it".

Classroom: I am listening, looking, speaking, having my brain in that space (and I may make some note to go look at x, y or z later because it's new info or it's something I am weak at). Self-study/solo study: I am reading, speaking, using apps, using a pen and paper, making connections....a lot. Just in class my brain can't do both. It's either neat notes that I can use later, or keep up with class. My class notes written notes have to be re-written to actually be understood haha!

It's not bad advice, tho

@dyastro7479 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, i feel like she didn't realize that she's not supposed to just stop at copying it word for word. She needs to eventually take the actually really important info and "do something" with it. Note taking is about making your own study guide, as a quick reference.

ive been learning korean for a year and a half at uni, i major in translation and my second lang is korean. and i honestly dont know what to do, i do well in class, but i recently started taking topik 2 classes and everything is so hard, i have to translate the entire sentence of the exercise in order to just understand it. usually u would translate just 2-3 words, but i translte everythings cause i dont understand, and i dont really know how to learn vocabulary, i know a lot of words if i hear them, when im watching a drama i understand like 50% of what they say, and can understand almost everything from context. when it comes to reading and doing exercises im lost, i look at the textbook and i see characterst before seeing the actual words, and it so dissapointing cause ive known how to read korean for like 6 years. i always take notes of grammar, but i never look back on the,, most of them i understand immediately and i recognize grammar i studied in songs and dramas, shows etc. and if i have to write a simple essay, my mind will automatically know how to use x grammar or y grammar and also will remember words i thought i forgot. i used quizlet to memorise vocab but i forgot all of it almost, if i see it in a text, i remember but i cannot just use it when i need to. i dont know what to do and how to study honestly. eng is also not my first lang, and i just know it, i never had to study it like from scratch, one day i realized i know and understand english, but idk what to do and how to study korean. im supposed to be at least intermediate now, but i still think of myself as a begginer in terms of vocab and some grammar. kcneiucnaleifjcnalefjcn im gonna cry idk what to do

I agree with you about howtostudykorean website. Their grammar explanation is so good than compared to TTMIK. TTMIK is not bad but it shouldn't be your only resource while self-learning Korean because their explanations aren't enough for you to completely grasp everything. Go for more resources! There are lots of YT channels that do the explanation apart from howtostudykorean. Good luck to everyone learning Korean! Let's do this guys! ❤️

most of the books i got in korea for studying korean language don't have explanations. It has just a lot of grammar with few sentence samples and everything feel so rushed in the books. All the new informations i cannot absorb and it makes self studying so hard that i feel stuck. I am very unhappy with myself as i can't improve my skills at all lately. Thank you for these videos. I learn so many new tips from you.

Ahhhh yes!! I think most Korean textbooks from Korean universities are like this 😢 Since they're meant for the classroom, they seem to expect the teacher to explain it all. Which is fine, except that many people try to use them for self-study

Do you have any tips in like actually knowing how to speak, because in my Spanish classes I can't reply to anything with out translating the words in my head and translating the english response to spanish and doing that taking like a minute to think of how to respond. Basically is there any tips to just be able to "know" how to interpret right away
