We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world - and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

That's such an important topic! Biodiversity is key! Our crew filmed a super important climate hero: Whales! These marine giants, like filter-feeding baleen and sperm whales, stockpile tonnes of carbon in their bodies, equivalent to 1,500 trees each. When they die, their carcasses sink to the bottom of the sea, taking the carbon with them out of the atmospheric cycle. But that's not all; they also contribute to the growth of plankton, which captures 40% of all CO2 produced worldwide. And to really understand that in financial terms, 2e talked to an economist that told us the real value of a whale. Without whales, the ocean dies, and without the ocean, we die!

Biodiversity was something I never heard of before I started researching topics for my channel…but it truly pops up constantly for all environmental topics! Roads using more space than train tracks? Loss of land space and the associate biodiversity. Excessive use of fertilizers in Ag? Loss of helpful insect biodiversity. Urban sprawl? Loss of crucial marshland and other areas rich with biodiversity. Eating meat vs protein rich plants? Extra space usage leads to more biodiversity loss. We really do need to make a ton of changes all throughout our society in order to solve this! Luckily, the scientific community has loads of data saying exactly what those changes need to be!

Why is the closing remarks and actually the whole video so human oriented? We have to protect biodiversity to secure our survival (or for the beauty of biodiversity as said in the end). This is kinda crazy, that we don't once say that we should do this for the other living beings on the planet! Most of all, we own it to the other ones.

Human agriculture would have a much smaller impact if we gave up animal husbandry. 80% of all big crops are grown to feed livestock. Livestock also uses huge areas to graze. All so people can eat a hamburger. There are alternatives to all the animal products that provide 100% of the nutrition a human needs. Turn half the land back to the wild forests.

Hey friends! I hope you're all doing well. I wanted to share something important with all of you. As we are becoming more aware of the environmental challenges we face, I think it's time we take action on an individual level too. So here's my request to all of you - let's each grow at least one sapling in our houses. It's a small step, but it can have a big impact. By planting trees, we can contribute towards restoring the environment, improving air quality, and creating a greener and healthier space around us. I know some of you may already have gardens or balconies where you can easily plant a sapling. But for those who don't have much space, even a small pot with a sapling can make a difference. There are many types of plants that can thrive indoors too. Let's make this a fun activity together. We can share our progress, exchange tips, and maybe even have a friendly competition to see whose sapling grows the fastest or becomes the healthiest. I truly believe that if each of us takes this simple step, we can collectively make a positive impact on our environment. So, what do you say? Are you up for the challenge? Let's grow some green and make our homes more eco-friendly!

So , Of course it depends on how we consume . but a really important point is the lobby. oil, gold, precious metal, weapons . as long as we don't put pressure on the System as a whole, politicians and lobbyists will slowly squeeze us to an terrible existence and nature will die , no matter what reason we have to drive a car or fly on vacation, we immediately contribute to it. what is really important? to live comfortably today , or instead in 30 years when we are too old to fight for food or something else if we are lucky to make it that far.

I like the idea of animal Jenga. It's just normal Jenga but each individual piece has a different animal on it from the same ecosystem. There could be different boxes for different ecosystems like Forest, Arctic, Desert, Ocean, Madagascar, and others. ( Or maybe those are biomes? whatever ) Also one side of the box would be educational but in a fun way. A scientist ( maybe biologist is the one I'm thinking of ) could provide knowledge so its accurate. Hopefully it would be made in like an eco friendly way somehow. I'm guessing a designer would make it look good. More words ect. Or I guess you could just DIY it with animal stickers if you want but that wouldn't be as ✨professional✨ lol. I like theirs though no shade. I once played Giant Jenga that might be irrelevant to this comment tho it's just a fun fact. My dog looks so cute right now. I'm guessing I should try to sleep tonight ok bye.

There is a lot of incorrect or exaggerated information in this article. While I agree that diversity is very important, diversity is not just found in trees and their surrounding environment, we do not take care of the ocean either, and there are grasslands and wetlands that are vital parts of the ecosystem and biodiversity. When everyone is so concerned with “what about the trees,” they kind of forget what was actually there in that spot to begin with. Then, you have well-meaning hippies (like me) planting trees in an area that did not need trees, or just ignoring the natural species of that area entirely to the point that you, well-meaning as you are, plant invasive species. You can always tell when somebody does not actually care about the environment if they are spouting stuff like this, which I would probably call eco-fascism. Another thing is, I’m pretty sure that there was a bigger extinction event than what we’re currently having, not to say that the one that we’re having now is good, but it’s not just a blip compared to the magnitude of what the world lost at those times. One ironic thing is that I don’t think anybody has pointed out is that usually the plants that give us foundations for new medication are found in tropical environments, which is ironic because the people in tropical environments rarely get to see the benefit of these. But there are many things that are just wrong. The world could sustain even more people, but we do not use resources properly, and we have a significant amount of resource waste. The hint in this video that we do not have enough resources is absolutely insane, and that means that people, sorry, poor people, do not get to have kids, houses, or cars, or anything. It is funny how that works! There is a fine line between actually taking care of the environment and beating poor people over the head with a green stick to keep them poor because you are so moralistic that you get to decide how their earth-poisoning life is going to play out! The amount of articles that I have read depicting how the “developed world” (obviously not their brains) must stop developing countries from using coal or animal dung as fuel is insane. Meanwhile, they offer no alternative that doesn't cost billions of dollars. It gives off the same vibes as "we don't care that you want to feed your little kid so they don't die because that's the best way we've thought of to keep the world cooler and you shouldn’t have kids because you’re poor" (if that's not fascism, I don't know what is). And it's all the fault of the poor and the "middle class" (read as less poor), even though statistics reveal that rich people are the ones using most of the resources. TLDR: rich people are bad, and poor people are doing their best. There is a significant responsibility for those who want to care for the environment not to become eco-fascist.

Thanks for the great video. The natural world is extremely important to me, not because of the potential benefit it provides me or other people, but because this living planet is a tapestry of so many types of life working in balance with each other, as it has done for hundreds of millions of years. Unfortunately as we "intelligent" beings arose and advanced at a remarkable but crazy rate, we completely threw off that balance due to the belief the whole thing revolves around us and this imagined world of our own creation within reality, all about competing empires, political ideologies and what economic system was best. It's time we woke up to the real world that exists outside of civilisation that's been seriously degraded, and truly recognize our place as part of nature, not masters of it

Overpopulation and overconsumption have caused this. You didn't mention addressing this in your solutions.

@everythingmatters6308 We do address overconsumption in the video (2:46). In our solutions section, we suggest that leaving forests standing is one solution (7:18). As for overpopulation - that is actually a bit complicated. One of our reporters looked into the topic: 📺 Is overpopulation really a problem for the planet? ☞ kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYavXqRtpdl3jZY

Lest also talk about the biggest issue - overpopulation. There is simply too much of us on this planet. We cant no longer afford to have lots of kids. Most families are heavily dysfunctional anyway, contributing to acting out to nature in adult children from them. We need to have less or no kids, heal ourselves, heal the world. And as a new, sustainable species, we can live in peace with nature, and then maybe procreate, if we have strength, health, good partner, support and willingness.

and why exactly overpopulation is an issue, around 1/3 of the total food production is wasted every year, while people in africa still die of starvation, overpopulation is just a stupid answer given to people like you so you will not actually start to think, overpopulation is not a problem, capitalism is
@sriharshacv7760
@sriharshacv7760 Жыл бұрын
That is going to happen anyway (especially the less / no kids part ). Not many are feeling confident that they can manage kids with some level of safety net. It is not overpopulation. We simply haven't streamlined the resources to benefit the population reasonably, nor did we ensure enough social safety nets to protect ourselves. (Having homeless shelters filled with addicts is not considered a safety net). In fact, we destroyed the 'family' in favor of empowerment of individuals. We destroyed the leverage men had (outside Muslims) in favor of female leverage and effectively ruined it for both sexes because most men do not want to get into a game where there is no leverage and women do not want to give up their newly found leverage. We progressed too 'rapidly' in areas that should evolve slowly. There is going to be some fallout for a while.

India is most populous now but are also down to 2 per Woman child average. There is no need to get up in peoples lives as the population boom will soon turn. Don't listen to story tellers look at the demographics.

@@michasosnowski5918 We may possibly hit 10 Billion but then there will be a steep decline this has all been charted. In the mean time I suggest find and participate with groups who are putting nature back. Then you can see first hand that its not only doable but scalable. Best intentions are out there, hands and minds are needed now.

Life means change. Evolution means change. Just because we have this certain kind of biodiversity right now doesn't mean we have to or we can preserve it forever. That's stupid or hubristic.

"Life means change. Evolution means change. Just because we have this certain kind of biodiversity right now doesn't mean we have to or we can preserve it forever. That's stupid or hubristic." No one is talking about natural evolution, they are talking about how we are destroying the biodiversity that billions of humans and millions of other species depend on. We are all part of one big web of life, but right now, we are rapidly destroying it, and we are destroying it in the kind of way that will cause mass extinctions of life (including most human) if we don't turn things around.

"Species get extinct and others get created. No issue." Under normal conditions, that's how it works, but man-made global warming, chemical pollution, plastic pollution, direct killing of species, and direct destruction of ecosystems is steadily eroding the Earth's ability to support life, including human life. The kind of harms we are doing to the planet are how you create a mass extinction event.
