I've watched a few playthroughs of this game and have never seen anyone do that crazy long spin jump over the flying koopas like Mitch. Im 90% sure that that is not the intended way, and it's honestly all the more impressive that Mitch pulled that off.

Devil's advocate and all, but... Says someone who has only watched the game and didn't play it (while all the secrets were unknown.) Everything is obvious when you know the answer. Mitch is playing this completely blind.
