Not necessarily for high end flagship models, but for the more common stuff, it would push prices lower, help them make more profit and massively improve maintainability. I worked in engineering for 10 years on an assembly line. What most people don't realize about car manufacturers is that they almost exclusively assemble parts bought from suppliers, and they all have a finite choice of suppliers. That includes engine blocks in most cases (ok high end cars might be different there). No car manufacturer is making bodywork, machining engine blocks, cam shafts, gearboxes, electronic components, cutting glass, molding plastics etc. It would be impossible. They just order from suppliers and put it all together. That's just what manufacturing is. 😂

That's how my Airtrek Turbo R was born. Mitsubishi changed the bumpers, bonnet and tail lights of the Outlander and made the Airtrek- giving it a "more urban" look with some funky interior options, but then for a sports model, they yoinked the driveline of an Evo and popped in an uprated auto gearbox and gave it somewhat milder cams and a little bit smaller turbo and presto! This the same driveline was then popped into the Evo wagon and Evo GTA, but to keep the Evo GTA and Evo Wagon on par with previous models, adding 40 more HP from the Airtrek Turbo R, they retained the more aggressive cams and turbo. The downside to the Airtrek is they were all automatics, the up-side is that It's an SUV chassis that is happy to handle more power. Unlike the regular Lancer chassis which required upgrades and strengthening in several locations to handle the Evolution driveline. If only the Lancer Estate was the same chassis as the Lancer Evolution Wagon, it would give Evo guys so many more options for restoration!

There is one particularly egregious case of parts bin sharing, and it's the first generation, pre-facelift, Land Rover Discovery. The headlights were from a Freight Rover Sherpa, the taillights were from an Austin Maestro Van, the chassis, door frames, and even most of the glass was from a first generation Range Rover, as were the axles, transfer case and the manual gearbox. A lot of the switchgear was from an Austin Montego, the door handles were from a Morris Marina, the heater vents from an Austin Metro. Even the V8 petrol was from the Range Rover, albeit earlier versions. The only new things were the bodywork outer skins, the roof and taildoor, some of the trim, and the 200 Tdi engine. In fact, the parts-bin sharing was done on such a cheap level, a lot of components still had the branding from the vehicle they were taken from!

Most luxury cars will depreciate, especially if you drive them, especially often. Cars that won't depreciate so much are the low mileage cars (especially if they are stock) cars from the 80s and 90s. Nowadays, its the NSXs, the Type R, or even the 964 Porsche. Sure, they may not be as fast as a supercar, but you will be making BANK!

I have always lived by a rule that no automobile can justify a price tag of more than $150,000 dollars.

2:07 bought a new Aston Martin Vantage in 201&, had it for under 48 hours. I died on the 101 bad fuel pump (ford fusion). Dealer took it back and I bought a GranTurismo. Still have the GranTurismo, the engine still sings.

6:00, you should see the amount of Daewoo parts that are on GM vehicles, including Holden vehicles as well as US GM vehicles,Opel vehicles& other brands as well including Suzuki ,Isuzu & Honda, even the rear brakes on the Mitsubishi Diamante are just from a Daewoo Leganza

Back in the mid eighties, I was very much into the SoCal Bug scene, upon installing a select-A-drop front axle, I replaced the wheel bearings prior to installing the new Porsche alloy rims. My neighbor came by while I was doing the install on my Bug, and he owned a Porsche 911T. He asked if I would be willing to replace the wheel bearings on the front of his ride the next day, and I agreed. Next day I walked back into the same parts store where I bought my wheel bearings for the VW. The timken bearings I bought the day before for my Bug cost $10, but when I ordered the wheel bearings for my neighbors 911T, the exact same Timken Bearings, with The Exact Same part number as the VW's, except for a -P at the end of the number, were $110! They were the exact same part!!!!🤬

I had a 2008 Volvo C30 back in the day, awesome hatchback! Busted a shock absorber and decided to run the part number in the web. I ended finding out the Mazda 5 used the same part for a third of the price. Also a friend of mine in Spain had a 2014 Range Rover Evoque Diesel with a damaged turbo cooler. We ended up finding out it shared the engine with a small Ford delivery wagon only available in Europe. He got it more than 3 times off the Range Rover price. Finally all the McLaren Supercars use a Nissan VRH35L racing engine redesigned by Ricardo PLC that uses Nissan Sentra's coils and Mitsubishi turbos. 20 bucks for the Sentra coils against 250 bucks at the McLaren website.🤦🏽♂️

This video can also be interpreted as: You can buy cheap parts and then sell them as expensive spares for sports cars.

(Also, from the motorcycle world: The engine in a Kawasaki Versys is the same as for a Ninja, with a slightly different tune and a different clutch. It's also $1,000 cheaper on average to buy.)

I'm telling you people, if Deer wanted to make fast cars in addition to tractors like Laborghini, they would be faster, more beautiful and more reliable.

For that Aston Martin, I always felt like that Aston looked like a Jag, i wasnt sure why or how to explain it without comparing side by side, but it was so clearly a jag. Happy to get the backstory. Also I'm a Stellantis Technician, so im very used to luxury cars made with dirt cheap parts, id share stories but im sure most car enthusiasts are well aware lol Edit: 4:46 oh no here it comes

Companies that make buses and RVs are big parts bins fans, too. I've seen headlights and tail lights from random cars like say, a 94 Golf. Kinda fun to look at them and notice what car they're from

And then there's Delphi, a company which made all the little doodads you can't see on cars. For about 30 years, every car made in North America had one of two electric window motors, the basic and the quiet one. Both made by Delphi.

Funny you mention the DB7. I remember climbing into one and immediately recognizing my RX-7’s ashtray. I pulled it out and there was the FD part number prefix.

Evo X didn't deserve all that hate. A chassis is just a rigid frame that connects the wheels to the rest of the car, doesn't make the X any less of a beast

Parts-bin-special is part of what made the viper special. If the part doesnt make it go fast, spend as little as possible.
