You are an excellent communicator and, of course, an amazing player. I sincerely appreciate the infusion of joy during this time and appreciate how you integrated that one little gem into your playing. Knowledge is best applied. Very well done video.

Excellent podcast. I have a voice leading question that comes to mind. When voiceleading, do you sometimes have to switch inversions in order to keep all of the lines moving in a particular direction? Is switching inversions ok or an indicator for you to reassess your approach? Keep the podcasts coming!!

Great Question. The voice leading principle kinda makes you imagine the material as if you were in a 4-part choir kinda thing, in which each voice is independent and has its own path. When transferring it over to stuff like what I'm showing, it becomes more and more of a guide, a principle rather than a strict rules system etc. A desired approach rather than an obligation. you're not watching every single voice that close but you're conscious of the principle and making sure you're moving the harmony the best way you can. That being said, when talking specifically about inversions, you're not braking any particular rules by inverting chords, quite the opposite actually. It's an effective way to minimize big leaps and get the voices closer. Hope it helps! best GS

The interesting thing about James is that even when I'm hearing the major 7th chords in the verses, I'm sometimes singing the b7ths in the chord to myself regardless for voice leading's sake as you mentioned. Btw I saw your Lyle Mays tribute video and loved it, was that Ocarina synth programmed by you or was it a Korg preset? Sounded really accurate.

Thank you! yeah, I keep hearing the b7th all the time now because of that. Regarding the tribute song - thank you so much, glad to hear you liked. Unbelievably, that IS LYLE MAYS KEYBOARD! His JX-10... I found it on a store in LA and I have it now. He left the sounds in it, including the classic Ocarina lead. I have goosebumps every time I play this instrument.. Amazing stuff...
