My sister is HIV + ...she has been infected for almost 10 years ...she doesn't take her medication she quit taking her medication she says she can't deal with the side effects of the pills ....I think she doesn't care for her health....what advice do you give her ???
@NozibeleQamngana5 жыл бұрын
Nkulee - I wish there could be a straight answer for this question. See, as I mentioned in the video, medication could never be forced on anyone. A person has to willingly take medication on their own. Side effects vary from one person to the next. However, I would have advised that they consult with a doctor to see what options they have. The doctor will evaluate what medication they're giving and see if there's no other dosage they can give your sister. But I've come to understand, as I mentioned in the video, that such cases also has a lot to do with their mental health. Taking medication for the rest of your life is a constant reminder that you're HIV positive. And sometimes others do not deal well with this. All you can do at this point is to support your sister, keep encouraging them, but do not push them. Pushing them may result in them pushing you away.

Is it wise to tell your child about it
@Thokozile_Tee5 жыл бұрын
Depends on the child's age and understanding
@NozibeleQamngana5 жыл бұрын
Hi Pam, there's been a lot of written about this. I've personally worked with children infected from birth, now teenagers. I've also worked with parents who are positive and don't know how to disclose. It varies from person to the next. My own recommendation is to start them early as possible. Explain to them why Mommy has to take pills everyday. They may not understand what HIV is at a young age. But you could make use of different examples. "God created everyone with big and strong soldiers that fight to protect the inside of our bodies everyday. Mommy has these soldiers. Daddy has these soldiers. You have these soldiers. You may not see them, but even now, they're busy fighting inside our bodies. But at the same time, there are bad soldiers that want to fight the good soldiers, so that you are left feeling sick. You don't want to feel sick, do you? You don't want mommy feeling sick do you? Good. Because you are still little, your soldiers are still strong. But because mommy is older, she has to take this pill to help the good soldiers fighting." At this point, you show them the pill. You can actually make it part of the routine that they help you take your pill everyday. The conversation will progress as they grow and develop more understanding. The example above also helps with when the child is the one that's infected. The worse thing, in my opinion, that you can do is wait. Hope this helps.

I don’t believe in getting close to someone just so they can disclose their status or to see if they will. Sounds very manipulative.
@NozibeleQamngana5 жыл бұрын
I think that is interpretation. The reason why those two ladies came to me was because they wanted to support their loved ones but they didn't know how. Remember, we don't know what the cousins are going through. When I say get close to someone, I'm encouraging you to build the relationship first - so that one may eventually get comfortable with you first. I encourage this so that they may have someone they can rely on. Someone they can talk to. Even if they don't eventually disclose, but knowing that there's someone who cares for them is enough. Trust me I know. So I think its about one's intention, when building that relationship. If you're going to stop getting close to that person because they're not disclosing, the intention was not sincere in the first place. I hope this makes sense :)
