How Madara's Time Travel Jutsu Breakes The Naruto Universe

Madara's Mangekyou Sharingan abilities are mysterious. However we see in an OVA of Naruto Storm Revolutions where they first showed Madara vs Hashirama that Madara has the ability to reverse time, or a time travel jutsu. The problem is that we cannot say for certain if that section of the Hashirama vs Madara fight in the OVA is canon or not. It happens before the Madara vs Hashirama section of the fight in the Naruto manga and Naruto anime.
Still, if Hashirama had this Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan Ability to reverse time around him, he would be invincible. Black Zetsu would never stab Madara form behind, for Madara would simply reverse time and negate any attacks he suffered during the Naruto War Arc.

Since limbo's power fully scales to Madara instead of being weakened like clones, it only makes Naruto's feat of taking on all 4 more crazy. 6 pathes Naruto is on a completely different level than BSM and any form of madara, really.

My theory is he couldn't travel in time, but foresee the future. The difference is with the first he can cast after the damage is done, but with the second he had to cast BEFORE a dangerous event. He could do this in a small window of time and had to choose when to see the future. This explains to me why he casted it in the OVA. Why would he reverse time when he already blocked that shuriken? Makes more sense to me he casted a foreseen upon that curtain of dirt and when the direction of the next attack is highly uncertain then.

I think initially ms, ems and ems going to rinnagan were not part of the original storyline, especially ems. Madara was written to be powerful already in raw power so he didn't need ms, ems and rinnagan. I think, usually, animators would do something to the scene to imply this is actually something he sees because of his ability and not time being reversed. Like, blur the side/make them fade, to give that feeling it is a vision of the futur, then have him try to avoid said futur.

I think it was a good way to explain Madara to the fans by bringing him back and a great segway to explain the how the tailed beasts and dojutsus came into existence and their originators. Some clans have to train all their lives to get a little stronger while some just need to exist and they get insane amounts of chakra and others just need to experience some trauma and they get exponentially more powerful.

I can think of 2 ways to save the ability. Both are purely headcanon, but I submit that they could work. Option 1: Madara's ability only affects what's in his field of view. Like the Amaterasu being able to burn away something you're looking at, Madara can reverse the flow of time of whatever he can see rather than being a radius around him. It also further plays into the idea that Madara doesn't like people being behind him and why he was killed from a stab to the back. Option 2 (aka: if he were a JoJo character): Madara can't heal damage caused before activating. His memories are still intact, so maybe he can't reverse damage dealt to his body. The only time we see the ability (despite dubious canon and I don't remember the whole thing) is when he blocks an attack and gets knocked down, leaving him open to a follow up. But his body is ultimately okay. Once he's hit and bleeding, there's no reason to go back. Either way, his body would follow as expected given that the cause for his movement was reversed. Just a thought.

The heroes are fighting desparately for everyone they love, they've been fighting with their life in the line, night and day without rest. All this, only to witness Marada succeed in casting the Infinite Tsukinome, and as the branches of the divine tree wrap around you, you desire with all your heart that Marada looses. And the Infinite Tsukinome shows you exactly that. This would also explain why Marada loosing makes so little sense. There is no scenario where Marada looses because Zetsu stabbed him. But if this is just someone's fantasy in the Infinite Tsukinome, then there is no need for it to makes sense because it's an illusion anyway. Question is, whose fantasy is this?

I was always sure that his skill was not "time manipulation" but that thanks to his ability he could see where the hit came from and was therefore prepared for the next one. Thanks to this, he knew that he should prepare to defend and not jump to attack. A thrown shuriken was not thrown again. For me, it never felt like turning back time. Heck, you could actually make something like : the Left eye reverse the movement, but the right eye is a powerful but discret genjustu, kinda like Shisui's. Then, the reason people don't remember is because they are under the genjutsu. (If it was that, Sasuke can counter it, Naruto due to being a perfect jinchuriki can also counter it) Or, if you go with the previous idea it is genuinely reversing time... Sakura could have been the one giving the info. You just need a small Katsuyu to be on her shoulder, kinda like wihen Naruto was fighting Pain and reporting she saw it from outside the range of the ability to Sakura. She is supposed to be among the smartest of the Konoha 12, she would not scream at the boys about his ability just to put a target on herself (I hope) but she could do something like touching their shoulder and summoning a very small Katsuyu on them so she can brief them... and heal them while they fight. Like this, the boys would be told whenever the ability was used so they know he knows and won't be caught by surprise. If Katsuyu is under the clothes, Madara may not notice her)... And, had Kishimoto given Sakura Genjutsu, I would say that Sakura would run away from the battle, in order to identify the necessary range to be out of the effect... then would try to catch him under a genjutsu to give the boys an opportunity to deal a finishing blow (since he would underestimate her even more than he had done Tsunade, I think and that Sakura is often said to be this chakra control genuis, so she may be able to catch him in a genjustu). ... Or destroy the left mangekyo eye, if they realised he only started doing so once he got it. (plus, what I described would be happening after the Infinite Tsukuyomi, if he has both his eyes...) and, heck, Sakura may have even trapped the left eye, if instead of making her unable to destroy the rinnegan, she was like : "Wait, Madara is too powerful for us in a straight foward fight... but, he also seem like he really want this eye. What if I put a trap on the eye ?" and she either put poison or a small sealing that would turn the eye useless once she activate it. (if poison, the effect could take a while, but given half of the blood in a body always goes to the head... he would be poisoned pretty damn fast honestly, especially more so, since he is not just sitting by uietly but in an intense fight. Doesn't mean it has to defeat him, just temporarily weaken him... maybe enough that Naruto and Sasuke got a good hit...)

My theory is: Madara do have the ability to reverse Time but it uses a lot of chakra. When Madara uses his ability it was after Hashirama threw a shuriken at him, after he reverses time Hashirama actually attacks him differently using the other weapons instead, implying that Hashirama actually did retain the memories of the time reversal. The base sharingan helps you predict the future. I think there’s at least a possibility that they were depicting that rather than an actual Mangekyo ability.

Madara is supposed to be such a badass, and yet he lost to Hashirama while he had the Nine Tails, which was basically the reason Naruto could compete with Sasuke's advanced Sharingan. Can't really respect him as a character when he's got so many hax and not only loses once, but twice when he gets sidelined by Zetsu.

I mean if it has heavy limitations then he'd have to use it very sparingly and even worse if it's chakra heavy then in critical moments it wouldn't matter if his chakra was already low.

To be fair, if Madara's MS ability was Reversing Time, there's one way to explain why it works in some instance and it doesn't in others. And it always comes to the funny quirk in Naruto where the true power of the dojutsu only work perfectly if you have both eyes. Right eye : Records events starting from a certain timeframe Left eye: Reverse recorded events to the beginning when he started to record Losing either one of the eyes immediately renders the reversing time capability impossible, thus in any scene he only has 1 eye makes it outright impossible to use his MS abilities. He would have to have both eyes for it to work. The chakra cost would not just be reversing time but also from storing that 'timeframe' that he might want to reverse it. The longer the time stored, the more chakra it costs, which would balance things out. I have no other way to explain it. And the thing with reversing time is, if you avoid path 'A', it doesn't guarantee that path 'B' will lead to success. Madara going back in time to avoid a deadly strike wouldn't automatically guarantee a victory afterwards. Perhaps it would against everyone, save for Hashirama. We have to remember that the stronger Madara is, the more we have to scale Hashirama automatically. It's by design of the plot because Madara was defeated by Hashirama.

You can’t use your EMS abilities with a rinnegan you need to have EMS or MS activated to use your EME/MS abilities unless you have a 6 tomoe rinnegan like sasuke does.

I think that animation on him reversing time is not actually madara reversing time. It is just how uchiha predicting things with their sharingan and the naruto animation team present it that way in anime. Because you know, they need to show more dramatic way of uchiha battle especially when madara is involved.

Ive never really like that he could reverse time of the area around him but more that he himself could move through time. One eye makes a save point while the other eye can reload to that previous save point. As more time passes from the save point it cost more chakra to move back in time. Because the eyes were already said to predict the future, I’ve thought that after a prolonged battle his eyes will have enough data to predict movements and he can place markers to move forwards in time as well. Moving back in time also heals his body to a previous time, so if his arm was cut off and he jumps back to a previous save then there goes his arm back again. This is all probably too damn much but 🤷🏾‍♂️😂

If literally everything in the affected areas is being force to move backwards then so are the particals in their brain, as well as their chakra. So the affected people, would be actively losing that memory, EVEN IF the jutsu doesnt actually affect actual time! The only issue with this is there has to be some way to make the jutsu not affect madaras brain, else he would just get stuck in an infinite loop. Also, as to why Madara couldnt reverse time when obito/zetsu stabbed him: He was a ten tails jinjuriki! Maybe he just has the same restriction on his mangekyo abilities that obito has when he became juubito! Obito couldnt use kamui as a ten tails jinjuriki, and madara couldnt use his time reverse! Case closed! As for why he can still be beat by Hashirama, despite this ability, eitther a) it consumes a massive amount of chakara or b) it has limited uses within a certain amount of time. Thus, after seeing he wasnt able to beat hashirama, he decided to go for plan B: fake his death, and try and get something out of the fight, i.e. Hashirama cells.

Man I always loved the eternal ízânágí Idea… but I can understand not wanting to write it after coming up with an idea that heavy… maybe other mangaka and editors raised questions which made him think “ohh… maybe I shouldn’t do that cause of their logic… and confused fans…” But it would make sense if he used this jūtsū and takes on entire fourth division kinda casually before even dropping meteors like he wants to do what Tōbírámà used to do with his Edo tènséī enemies that he’d send around eternally nuking places… Makes sense if we just never saw the ability… Basically a cool version of urashiki… ha

Remember that Obito couldnt use Kamui when he became the Jinchuriki of the Ten Tails. The same could have applied to stopping time with thr Ten tails inside of you just not working. Thats why he dodged a lot of hits before becoming the Jinchuriki.

I think that was just an illustration of advanced foresight, like an exaggerated version of the base sharigans foresight... he's not literally reversing time, he is "seeing" the future. Also he was able t9 dodge without sight using sage mode that he absorbed from hashirama.

Best case scenario for time travel is probably that it has a duration like Kamui's intangibility except the duration is much shorter (5 seconds instead of 5 minutes), and it has a cooldown thats as long as, if not longer than, how much time was reversed. That way it can't be spammed nullifying the limit. As for the flying raijin slash, he might have time travel in both eyes just using only one gives it a larger cooldown (anywhere from double to tens of times would probably work) and/or chakra cost.

To answer the question: no, he can't use his MS ability/abilities while the rinnegan is active. Sasuke's rinnegan has the tomoe, so can. Funny if the OVA version is the original, and the manga version is the final version that happened after Madara reversed the original conclusion using his MS ability. The manga one was from Hashirama's perspective, after all. Having the space-only version would make sense as an ability fit for someone who lost everyone and has to face his enemies alone. The time-travel one would add to how he's so experienced. In addition to all the war going on constantly, he's witnessed countless strategies countless times over. So to the reader and everyone in-universe, he has the perfect counter to everything. He might have (from his extended experience) or he just rewound it and used that knowledge. As for after the 10-tails, Madara's just doing the same thing Aizen did in Bleach. He thought he had no reason to be on guard anymore. As for Zetsu, Madara straight up said he couldn't move. Zetsu got him through the heart, and seemingly disrupted his ability to use chakra or something. Black Zetsu apparently has weird abilities like that, being able to invade peoples bodies etc. Oh, with Hashirama, he purposefully let that loss happen because he had bitten a chunk of Hashirama's flesh off and wanted to appear dead, use Izanagi, and wait until he awakened the rinnegan to complete his actual plan. It's still surprisingly explainable even if he really could rewind time/events that specifically affect him.

Ig that ability is in the eye that he use to cast izanagi and he lost it because that eye went blind. Maybe awakening rinnegan only restore the eye as "normal eye that evolves to rinnegan" without bringing back the lost ability. That's why as soon as he gets out of edo tensei he lost that reverse time thing

it's the power of perception, Madara I think said something about it... He can like possibly see the future. And it fits with limbo hengoku. Madara have a kind of space time technique, where his perception is high he sees in slow mo and then perceives things, thus if it's beyond his capacity, he won't be able to dodge but he will do something. Limbo hengo is the space variant. And perhaps he couldn't detect black zetzu cos otsusuki are immune to ninjitsu. Thus madara's is seeing possible future and not the actual future by observing. One eye is hyper observation and reading of battle to predict the actual future. The other is manipulating he's place in space which is limbo hengoku

Reversing time to avoid getting hit is redundant considering the sharingan allows you to predict you're going to get hit and you can dodge it. Especially if you're the most powerfull character in the series. There's no excuse for not dodging basically every single attack. You can either use the giga sharingan ability, almost get hit, reverse time then dodge the attack, as if you could see the future. Or.. use base sharingan to predict an attack is coming and dodge it, as if you could see the future. I mean from the outside looking in it doesn't look like you used some secret ability. It just looks like you're extra proficient at your base ability. The ability 10 year olds can use.
