@@jasons2008 today’s stockfish would dismantle alpha0 considering it has not been trained since it’s game against stockfish8. Not to mention I don’t think stockfish8 was even the strongest stockfish as at that time, and they ran the stockfish8 on suboptimal hardware. The match makes alpha0 look a lot better than it actually was. At a high enough depth stockfish10 was able to calculate most of the moves made by alpha0 and defend appropriately. Now we have stockfish13 that also uses a neural network, so alpha0 would stand close to zero chance.

I think Alpha Zero likes King mobility so much because it's own tactic heavily relies on taking it's opponents pieces mobility, meaning that it can come to the conclusion "I win trough suffocation, so I will not loose to it. This also makes sense because it trained agains itself, and thus had to go up against it's own suffocation style in training.

it does because in the simulations it worked better. but yeah, in that analogy, it knows he will need a few steps that delay and like 36 moves later the opponent has to do a delay too, and when everything is locked up, he can force the opponent to move without any value, and he can still swap lines in a meaningful way.

Late to the game on this video, but I love that people are starting to acknowledge pawns as the most important pieces in chess, that blocking opponents' pieces out of the game is just as important as taking material, that your own pieces blocking you are a MUCH bigger problem during "oh no I'm stuck" scenarios than your opponent's pieces blocking you in, and that king mobility is crucial.

With "I don't know why AlphaZero likes king mobility so much" -- Remember that AlphaZero is trained exclusively by playing against itself. It expects everybody to play the way it does, so there's a good chance that it wants to counter the same style of aggressive pawn push that it uses to attack.
@KimiiiRaikkonen
@KimiiiRaikkonen Жыл бұрын
That's very true. I feel we've been shown multiple times now how much it attacks the short castle. It knows from playing against itself that's not good, so it likes mobility. Humans don't attack the same way, so we don't get punished for the auto-castling we do. If I play with that much mobility, I'm constantly hanging pieces, getting forked, pinned, forced blocks.. Lot's of consequences. But maybe that's good practise, to be able to navigate the games with open king without hanging pieces, just to have the mobility, and put this type of pressure on the enemy king and try to put pieces out of play. I love to try and learn from computers

The nice thing about something like AlphaZero or Leela as opposed to something like Stockfish is that their evaluation functions are computationally expensive and are essentially compressed versions of game tree search using similar evaluation functions and ultimately based on winning. This iterated distillation and amplification approach means that a human can't learn to copy what stockfish does. you can't think about millions of moves. What you can do is learn to think more like how Leela or AlphaZero do, because humans are good at storing highly complex intuitive evaluation functions and doing a little bit of lookahead.

love alphazero games, would love to see more of the games analysed, I have only ever seen ten games analysed and when there are a hundred of them that's really a missed opportunity to learn. (but 50 years in the future there is probably a quantum computer that has solved chess, so I imagine everyone will start the at least the same four moves)

By FAR the most fascinating video about chess I have ever seen. I am now even more interested in the championship match coming Magnus versus Ian. You know Ian must be studying games of Magnus right now. The video also exposes the weakness. Sure, you can get lessons from AlphaZero. Good. But now you have to implement it and use the advantage. As a human, and sometimes in time pressure. Okay, so we can see what Alpha is doing conceptually. How well does Magnus use this new understanding that Alpha has given us? How and what will Ian do? The match just became more interesting to me after seeing this video and will be fascinating to see the games.

What I find fascinating about chess is that there always seems to be a way to break mathematical or tactical deadlock... Many systems similar to chess tend to become solved (or bogged down in quagmire there is no way out of) and despite the truly mind boggling amount of computing power poured into this game, there still seems to be ways forward.

Magnus used to be a super attacking and sacrificial player when he was young. Then when he matured he shifted to a technical, grindy style. It's really cool that he's kind of returning to his youth and playing riskier and crazy chess sometimes.

Nah he is always very technical and grinding machine. Like even in this alpha zero style play he is just grinding out the position and in between some spicy sacrifices. His main advantage against every other top player is his image and aura of being a engine in endgames, the so called Magnus effect
