Sometimes you just want to sit down and plug into an amp, and a Fender Deluxe Reverb of any kind sounds pretty good. I typically just plug straight in with maybe an analog delay pedal, and play at room volume clean. That's it! Never played a Lone Star. I did play an old Blackface Pro Reverb once, which oddly sounded exactly like a 60's black face amp.. really good, bordering on incredible! Whatever amp you have it needs to have tubes and it needs to work correctly, no hissing or popping. Good tube reverb is also required... so it probably has to be a Fender I think. Right?

Well, here the one amp is a Boss Katana MkII 100w 1-12. Seems to do everything, and does it well. I have a Mesa MkV head but never cared for it. It can produce great tones, but seems way too complex and weighs a ton. Till the Katana my fav was a Fender Supersonic 22. The quality of build of my tube amps is superior, but for me, that's where it ends. I don't sell stuff any more because you just never know. Anyway, for home, the church I play at now and then and so on these Katanas have been very tough to top. Your channel, Studio Rats make it a great experience.

I gigged for many years with a Mark III (hardwood cab, wicker front) green stripe, yes there a compromises setting up and balancing the 3 channels. Sold it a few years ago because it was just too heavy to cart around gigging and also I needed to go rackmount and midi, so Marshall JMP1, plus the 20/20 power amp and a boss effects processor, I still have the rig. I've also had the Mark 5:25 which sounded great but maybe less flexible than the Mark III with 3 channels? Post covid going back out gigging I've used a Hughes and Kettner Black Spirit 200, ok its solid state but analogue, but totally midi controlled or you can go stomp box. Sat in the band mix I'm more than happy with it and have no urge to take the rack out instead. It's light, portable and I'm set up in a couple of minutes flat, no valve maintenance and it always sounds the same whether switched on for 1 minute or 1 hour.

I have two amps. One is a Supro Delta King 12. It sounds great, has a master volume, and I can use it in my basement. The other is a BluGuitar Amp1 which has a great clean channel, a JTM45 channel, a Plexi channel, and a higher gain channel that I don't use. Its 100 watts but scalable down to 1/2 watt. It's designed to fit on a pedal board. Most everything else I do is through a Strymon Iridium though I'm about to take possession of a ToneX. We'll see how that turns out.

If I was forced to give up my amps and keep only one, I'd have to keep my 1964 Fender Deluxe Reverb. I've always had best results using a Fender amp as a pedal platform. However I am in the crossroads of possibly jumping over to the world of modelers such as Helix or AxeFX vs sticking with a tube amp. I play in rock cover bands, and cover a lot of different genres, so for many reasons I am seriously considering one of the modelers.

I’ve got a Lonestar Classic 1x12, Rectoverb 25 1x12, and a modded Victory V30mk1 head with a higher gain EL34 tube set for the Marshall vibe that I plug into a closed back greenback loaded 1x12 and an open back 2x12 with a Vintage 30 and G12H anniversary speaker depending on my mood. They more than cover the bases for me. I’ve also been playing a lot more through my Helix LT lately. I spent a couple hours yesterday building up a Mesa patch bank with the Mark, Lonestar, and Recto amps in the Helix. They sound pretty good. 🤷🏼♂️

On your website, I noticed that you don't have any presets for the Line 6 Catalyst. However, you seem to have quite a few presets for the Helix. I love the sound and the brand in general ever since I bought a Spider Valve 112 a long time ago, but I don't feel ready to buy a Helix plus an active cabinet, etc. I find it quite cumbersome. Do you think the Catalyst isn't worth it and that it's better to have a Boss Katana, etc.?

Best clean sound I ever got was from a Bruno Cowtipper, at a rehearsal studio I used to go to. When the studio closed, I almost bought it, but couldn't justify spending the money just to have it sit in my apartment and never get to play it (it was really loud!). Plus, with 2 x 12's, it was very heavy for an oldish-guy like me. But I miss it!

I offloaded my amps and went with the new tone master from fender for versatility (silent stage, direct output, light weight). It’s not perfect but gets 90% there which is hard to beat. And use Amplitude for home studio sound. Your next video should be if you only had 1 guitar. 😊 do you have any albums out? Cheers mate! Thank you!

I’m wondering if you’ve tried the Mesa Boogie Fillmore series amps. I have several amps and struggle with the same questions. I mostly am a bedroom player and no longer gig. I’m usually using a modeler or, because I have little children, playing my electrics unplugged (actually a pretty satisfying thing). I’m contemplating selling all but one. I have an old Deluxe Reverb and a Fillmore among others. There’s something kinda special about the Deluxe but the Fillmore is very Deluxeish and has 2 identical channels and 3 selectable gain stages making it pretty versatile. If I had to take an amp to a gig it would almost definitely be the Fillmore with some pedals. Possibly with the HX Stomp setup with some effects presets. Just wondering your thoughts on the Fillmore or if you’ve played one… Cheers!

Some time after I bought a mark V 25w, and it was great, I feel the cleans were good, bot not as good as the lonestar, but I could get really heavy and tight distortion out of it, now living in an apartment even 25 watts is too much, sold it and bought a kemper, haven’t owned an amp since, miss it, but it’s not a necessity.

Over the last few years i got to play a Lonestar regularly and if i lost it all and had to start again that would be top of the list, unless maybe i found a MK5:25 at a price i couldn’t resist - just from the portability perspective it is appealing… wish they would have made a Lonestar in the MK5:25 ‘form factor’

I tend to get my sound with any amp so I have a Mesa Mark V 90, Marshall JVM410 Randall/Synergy system. I use my modeling stuff cause the amps are just a pain to transport, but being able to crank them when no one is home is a great guilty pleasure.
@maxpeck4154 Жыл бұрын
I have 2 amps but I can get any sound I want from my Morgan MVP23. 23 watts, cathode biased el84 amp with no negative feedback (a la Vox), single channel, no boosts, no built-in effects, no effects loop, with a gain control that drives the preamp, a master volume that drives the power section, an interactive T/M/B EQ, AND power scaling (NOT an attenuator) that takes it from .25 watts up to the full 23. It doesn't sound exactly like one particular amp but I can get a Vox sound, a Fender sound, and a Marshall sound all by manipulating the EQ and the volumes. You can keep the volume low and the gain high for more sizzle, or roll the gain back and crank the volume for more punch. I did NOT want an effects loop. I run a Strymon Flint in front of the amp and that's it. I have nothing else in the signal chain. I plug my tuner in only when I need it. It's capable of really nice clean sound and as much gain/distortion as a cranked plexi at any volume with no pedals. Just a sensitive, responsive, simple amp. My main guitar is a p90 guitar and it's the first amp I've ever used that allows me to ride the volume and retain high end - set the amp dirty, roll the volume back to 5 or 6 and get Tele-like spank and sparkle - from a p90 guitar - without ever touching the amp. It's a keeper.

Great thought provoking video today. I'm fighting with this: do I even want to be a ONE amp boy? I bought a very versatile amp about a year ago: Bartel Sugarland. It produces Fender cleans, tweeds, Plexis and Vox voicings. Unlike the Mark 7, it has very simple controls. It was developed and built by Mark Bartel, the developer of all the great Tone King amps. It is a great amp. It truly is a master-built piece of equipment. But I find myself using my Quad Cortex +95% of the time and monitoring it with a pair of Focal speakers. For me nothing beats the QC - or the Helix Stomp for that matter - and it's really easy to use. It has all those great sounds and effects, and I love the form and functionality of it. One of the great pleasures for me personally, is hearing it in stereo. That's one of the reasons I hardly ever fire up any of my amps anymore. I pretty much play at home all the time, so I don't have much of a need for more than one amp, if any. I currently have 3 tube amps and a Fender GTX 100. I may bid adieu to the tube amps, but keep the GTX 100 because I can plug the QC or Stomp into the FX loop if I need an amp. Anyway, those are my thoughts. Thank you John. You are an inspiration.
@DrProgNerd Жыл бұрын
I had a QC too and loved it. I asked the QC forum once whether being able to import Neural plugins into the QC would make a big difference. One of the responses that I got was from someone who used Neural plugins and also had a QC. They said that there is nothing in plugins that you couldn't do in the QC. I flipped the script though thinking: "if they do basically the same thing, then why have a QC at all". I bought some plugins and found them to be pretty much on par with QC. I sold the QC and live entirely in Neural plugins now. They're outstanding. FWIW.

John you did not mention the Katana Mk2 Artist Head amp I see in the background on this video as a possible choice for a "one amp boy". I know you have in the recent past provided a video on this choice as an alternative. I see also The Studio Rats provided 3 examples recently on why the Katana is a hot contender to replace valve amps. We are/have entered the age of modelers and plug ins as alternatives to valve amps. Is discussing a single valve amp as a viable choice even relevant anymore?

I'm happy at just 2.5 amps now - Marshall Silver Jubilee and Fender 65 DRRI (plus a single FRFR, so that's why I'm calling it half as its not really anything tone wise by itself!). I can get most anything I need from that using HX Stomp and pedals.

I have a Mesa JP2C, so definitely don't need a Mark VII. I would have considered the Mark VII if it had two graphic EQs like the JP2C. I am currently a one-amp boy, and my amp of choice is a Boss Katana. I've used it by itself, used it as a pedal platform for a pedalboard or multi-fx, and used it as a cab for my Pod Go. It's convenient and sounds really good. The fact that I got it for $200 and it's nearly indestructible doesn't hurt one bit either. In practice I totally believe in and use the Fender clean platform (Deluxe Reverb) with pedals, a lot of times just the clean -- and I haven't found a better clean sound. But when I am using a dirtier amp (or a profile of one in the Kemper) there is something unmatched about an overdriven sound just coming from an amp. So maybe you need one of each, say the Deluxe Reverb and then some kind of a Vox.

I like to have an amp in every room that I might play a guitar in. If I had more rooms I'd need more amps, and vice versa. I like sprinkling guitars and amps around the house so I always have something within arms reach. ...In my 'garage' next to the couch I have one of those cheap Laney Cub12-R clones (so surprisingly good and my most versatile tube amp). ...In my 'Library' I have an old Tube Works RT-2100 I found in my father-in-law's basement (better overall than the clone, 150 watts: master over .05 shakes the windows and enrages my wife). ...Under the desk in my bedroom is my late Uncle's '65 Gibson Skylark (favorite). ...In my 'garage' at the desk I have whatever modeler plugged into a QSC K.12.2 hanging on the wall (far and away best sounding rig). If I acquired another tube amp, it would go here in addition to the QSC speaker.

@@johnmccarthy9445 I basically wanted the same thing with my stomp, tried a cheap wedge, returned it... tried a HeadRush FRFR thing, returned it... I just wanted to be able to plug in and crank it and get "the feeling". Took my stomp to GC and plugged it into mid-tier PA monitors, wasn't getting the feeling. Plugged into this QSC K12, struck a chord, and thought, "Oh, Yeah." I actually found out once I got it home that I can get something in it (I'm assuming the speaker) to compress just a touch and it sounds sooooo amazing. I can't recommend it enough. When I want clean and true (but loud) preproduction of my modeler tone it does that perfectly. And if I want to tear down the house with my rock, it does that too. Oh, how it does that. Then after the Tinnitus/mid 90's, Not downsizing but Wattage changes to 50 wt. Marshalls, Deluxe Reverbs, most likely the Dumble was replaced by another Marshall, on his newer tours you can spot a TWO ROCK, usually faces toward his Drummer/Spare amp? Maybe it is Dirty Rythmn amp. I guarantee if he had to lug it all up and set it up himself on Tour, well bet Eric would rather haul around 3 Tonex's for 3 amps. and maybe his pedal board going into each one, he is exactly my age and haulin around that weight, well not me. Your mileage might vary but not given with technology today. Here is a silly scenario, imagine Eric with one Kemper stage, 1Tonex, 1 Quad Cortex and even with that, could be put in a Suit case. But like one of your earlier videos, For gigging, only using a Couple at most 5 presets, so it does not get Nightmarery. And toying around with at Home with them is fine. Of amplifiers, I like the Amplified Nation line esp. the Steel String Singer, but they are almost as much as 2 rocks. And with Modelling I see no TEMPTATION. You might also know, as I have found out, trying to sell an Amp. even some of Best ever made is alot TOUGHER than Guitars and Mailing one which you found out can be a Nightmare. Myself I own a 93/marshall made AC30, And a 66 Pro Reverb like yours, both bought way before these astronomical prices for amps these days prices. I KNOW 1 GIGGING MUSICIAN WHO USES A LONESTAR, according to him they are quite heavy, he has not gigged since the start of Covid, so not currently active. I think unless someone is really WEALTHY, amp. collecting will most likely DIE off. You now have a greater responsibily of raising a Child, God Bless you in That . I made this comment on a video you made 9months ago, I wanted to make sure you see it. This Video: And comment: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4GXaX-tqsplebc "You could put that together for a Song. Great Lesson, Great Teacher. Awesome Player!!!! This could be YOUR Cliffs of Dover. Think about it." I so DO WANT TO THANK YOU, for that video, it has helped me visualize the Fretboard, in a new way somehow. But it is almost a Song like Cliffs, Cliffs might have started as an Exercise Eric was doing, Maybe. He is 1st and formost a Great composer.

Can you also explore the question of how many guitars do we need? 😉

Get something that does a clean tone well, the rest can be done with pedals.

The question is how many videos do you have to post each week to support yourself?

the money that the gobernment gave to argentinians wouldn't have allowed one to buy a guitar pedal!

Get rid of the Mesa's before they become repair money pits; stick to simple well made amp like your fender or keep it simple Classic 30 for versatility LOL Get the L'star back

Just need one that's good. Versatility is not needed or wanted...Versatility usually means mediocrity..."Jack of all trades, master of none" I doubt that Dumbles are considered versatile....only great. I need a great amp...not a versatile amp...I hate versatile amps...they all suck. I don't love a bunch of genres... My approach is that of an artist...I have worked in a studio or two but it's not a career. Nobody would hire me for my versatility...I would hate to have to do a Country or a Metal gig...
