How many Bettas can I put in my 10 gallon aquarium?
When you hear this you’re probably like
Duh
But you’d be surprised how often we see that. I swear it’s once or twice a week someone’ll ask “Can I put all 3 of my male Bettas together” or “Why do my Bettas keep killing each other”
The answer is 1 male Betta in a tank, it’s always 1. Unless you put a divider in the tank, then it’s 2, 1 on each side.
I’ve always said a Betta should be kept in at least 5 gallons so if you put a divider in a 10 gallon you now have 2 5 gallon tanks so you can have 1 on each side.
Just make sure they can’t see each other through the divider, it stresses them out.
But let’s take this in a different direction, let’s get controversial.
You do have the option to have multiple females in a tank. We call it a Betta Sorority.
Female Bettas are a lot less aggressive than the males but this can be really tricky cause they can still be pretty nasty and you wouldn’t wanna do this in a 10 gallon.
The truth is a lot of times when people ask the question how many can they put in a 10 gallon they’re asking about the females and my answer is always the same.
You can’t do a Betta Sorority in a 10 gallon.
I recommend at least a 20 gallon and the maximum number I would do is 5 females and there’s several reasons why.
First is if the girls don’t have room to get away from each other they’re more likely to fight and the next is you’re gonna wanna have some dither fish in with them to also help curb the aggression.
If you have 5 girls in there with 6-8 little dither fish that’s a lot of fish crammed in a little 10 gallon, plus they’re all on top of each other all the time. You’re asking for trouble.
If you double the size of the tank to a 20 gallon with the same number of fish there’s plenty more room for them to get away from each other. It just gives them more room to spread out and relax rather than being up each others butts all the time.
But wait Lisa, you said dither fish…. what’s that?
Dither fish are other fish that’ll give the Bettas something to focus on rather than constantly thinking about wanting to fight each other. Plus it adds more activity to the tank.
There’s two more important things that you need to know when it comes to keeping Bettas and this applies to keeping 1 male in a 5 gallon or 10 females in a 75 gallon with 12 dithers.
You need plants and you need to keep them fed.
The plants will be something for the fish to explore through while also giving them places to retreat if things go south. I’ll be doing a video in the next couple weeks revealing the top 3 plants for Betta tanks so be sure to subscribe with notifications on so you don’t miss that one. Also feel free to leave in the comments other Betta specific videos you’d like to see. I can all day about these fish.
And keep them fed, there’s only a few things that fish fight over and food is one of them.
A well fed fish will be more relaxed, less stressed and less likely to be looking for a fight.
So if you’re gonna do a sorority make sure it’s at least 20 gallons with 5 females, some dither fish, plenty of plants and keep their bellies full.
But the original question was how many Bettas can go in a 10 gallon and the answer again is 1, it doesn’t matter if it’s a male or a female.

My male beta used to be in a tank on his own, it sprung a leak so I temporarily moved him into the community tank. He loves it in there with platies, guppies, neons two golden rams and otocinclus. I couldn't move him back once I fixed the leak he looked depressed alone now he's more active and is loving life.

Always the best advice! I now have a Betta Sorority, but it all started when I got my first male Betta, Malygos on a whim (luckily I bought a 5gal when I got him) and after he passed I fell in love with Bettas and wanted a sorority. I also started with a 5gal with 5 girls, quickly realized that was not working and now my girls have a 48gal tank, heavily planted with a few other fish and they are happy as can be! (I have about 5 female Bettas, 3 Corys, 1 Longfin Bristlenose and 3 swordtails and all are happy and healthy!)

I LOVE u for the controversy 😆 honestly it’s different when you are constantly staring at your tank and supervising it versus you’re gone a lot.. you know. If you’re home a lot, you’re just more likely to try minor experiments lol. I’m actually thinking 20 gallon but I always watch smaller aquarium videos to say like hey, I will have a little extra room you know. I have barely had my bettas for 3 weeks and they are like in love with me. They just come right to my hand.. it’s crazy. They act affronted if I don’t individually feed them-each- of their pellets or shrimp. I totally agree about how good natured fish are if you keep them fed.

Hi! I have a 15 gall planted with harlequin rasbora and yamato shrimp and snails. Believe it or not, I've never had a betta in my 15 years of fish keeping :P But I want to fix that! I consider taking a betta after my 2 old rasbora (the only ones remaining from my school) are gone. However, I really do love yamato shrimp, so my question is: are female bettas usually agressive to those? Thanks for the info! (PS I know keeping only 2 rasbora together isn't the best, but my guys are quite old so, watching them go, I figure they're better off in the setup they grew old into than back at the local fish store...)

Depending on what size tank you got I would go with a Marineland canister filter or hang on the back price wise the reasonable but they are absolutely silent especially the canister filters

Lisa, I've always been curious about how bettas live in the wild? I know the water is generally shallow and warm, coupled with being heavily planted. Is that the only way to have a lage mix of male and females, just creating a huge paddy type set up? I've also heard wild caught specimens aren't QUITE as aggressive, so that might be how they're able to sustain a population.

they are less agressive, but they also have a lot of room to establish theyr territories, and if they are too many in the same water the weaker ones get killed until the balance is right

I have 30 Smaragdina brothers and sisters in a well planted 100cm. Wouldnt advice it. But if you have room to put fish aside its possible. My experience is a bigger group will evenly divide aggression. Sure some fish have some fin damage. But absolutely no stress, no discolour, no fast swimming, not one or a few bettas that are weak in a group. A lot of impressing behaviour though. And thats what makes it awesome. Gotta say, Smaragdinas are easiest species of Bettas I owned. Way more resilient and slightly less aggressive I think.

Hi Cheryl. 30 gallon is definitely better than a 20 gallon. You'll wanna make sure you have plenty of plants from top to bottom and little places for the bettas to claim as their own. Also, it would be a good idea to invest in some floating betta logs 😊 I like to have dither fish in my sororities as well. It's always good to have a back up plan before you start, incase you get a rude girl. Lisa

One thing i think people should touch on is this, you said a minimum of 29 gallons? I have a 33 US gallon tank but with substrate and hard scape it drops down to 25 US gallons, so what is the minimum tank size? It's all well and good saying minimum size this minimum size that, but we need the actual minimum size not the theoretical size, cos by that logic i can put 10 female bettas in my 33 gallon tank that is no longer a 33 gallon tank so the size would be under the minimum size

I accidentally had 2 male bettas in a 55 gallon tank. I bought one as female but it was a he. He was a short finned betta. As the tank was largish and heavily planted Fred and Fredrica lived on good terms. I would have never done this intentionally but I neither betta was particularly aggressive so it worked.

That should work, but always have a back up plan incase someone doesn't get along well with others or you have one get picked on. I've used several dithers. Pencil fish, glolight tetras, harlequin rasboras. You would probably want 12 -15 dithers in a HEAVILY PLANTED tank with 10 females. Lisa

It all depends on the betta. There are many types of Betta. I have my male and female Betta together in a 20 long. However they are Betta Simorums, not the common ones you find in cups.

I think a 30 should be the recommended size a sorority. I also just think sorority’s are more work than they are worth for 90% of keepers. Especially betta keepers, as they are a community full of beginners.

As a General rule I tell people 1 male.. especially if it's a 20 gal or less.. BUT, if you wanna do a good sized tank & LOAD it with plants & hiding spots, can add multiple females and males.. just keep a good ratio!! I try to keep at least 5 females for every 1 male & also add things like Cory cats & other smaller type fish.. if I see aggression, I take out that male, if 2 females won't leave each other alone, I take out the most aggressive.. eventually, you end up with Bettas that get along/ don't mind each other..

@@KGTropicals Thanks for the reply. I've been seeing a ton of posts on Betta related Facebook groups asking about setting up sororities and it seems pretty clear that the vast majority of them are not at a point where they would likely be successful with it :(

Even if the female a less agressive they are still an agressive fish, multiples female still causes lots of stress and reduce their immune system by à lot. As soon as you get one sick they others follow. It works .. sometimes.. But the reality is most betta owner dont know how much time and management you have to put in a sorority and it ends up not passing the test of time.

"The secret history living in your aquarium" is a channel/creator/fish keeper that would rightfully dissagree with you, as he keeps multiple male bettas in one tank without any dividers. The key is to let them have their own territories in a heavily planted tank that breaks their line of sight

Females fight? I have 4 and they always seem so peaceful. Didn't even know it was an issue. Its a 200l tank to be fair but I have never once seen them bother each other or any other fish

You can put 50 male bettas in a tank if the environment is right, tho...

I have 10 gallon with 5 males. The trick is to poke 1 eye out of each fish as it keeps him humble and less aggressive. 😉

A thing that I would love if someone tries it for me🐸: keeping Guppy males in a tank with Betta females. No Betta males, and no Guppy females🦩Thus only Guppy males in a Betta surority🤡

We've tried it and the females still go after the guppy males.

Maybe you could try this with Platy males? There is evidence that Platys are fast enough and do not get stressed even if Bettas systematically go after them🤡@@KGTropicals
