The German terms Burg and Schloss are both defined as residential buildings for royalty. The difference is that a Burg is also a defensive structure while a Schloss has a representative function. The term for a non-residential defensive structure would be Festung, while the term for a non-residential representative building would be Palast. Still these terms aren’t always applied consistently.

Check out the stretch of Rhein bank called the Lorelei. And the Mosel valley. Both are wine field areas. Especially gorgeous to drive through when it is early autumn because of the golden vines on all hills.

There are about 25,000 castles including ruins in Germany, including houses called Schlösser .(For translation, Google Translate is used, which translates the text within one second after the picture is taken.)

Great video as always. Check out the pfalz area for more castles. I can recommend burg Berwartstein or the Trifels complex (3 castles next to each other) in which king richard lionheart of england was imprisioned 1139 on his way back from the 3rd crusade

Very good tip. Burg Berwartstein is an absolute insider tip. It is a completely preserved real medieval Burg with a great secret passage through the rock and it can be visited in its entirety.

Oh and it’s even not you interested, checkout the Hessische Staatstheater Wiesbaden and the Kurhaus Wiesbaden. In Bad Homburg you can visit the Schloss there within a guided tour.

You should have tried to walk up the Königstein castle tower. If you like Hohensteincastle, you may like the much smaller Castleruin Freienfels. Within Runkel an der Lahn Ruin, you can just climb up one of the 3 towers. You can make a Rhinecastle tour. Starting from Rüdesheim to Bonn. Yes, please do a cathedral tour. I suggest Limburg an der Lahn cathedral. And the nearby St.Lubentius church in Dietkirchen an der Lahn. There is a Schloss in Weilburg, but you can only visit inside with a guided tour. I think no pictures are allowed to be taken. In East Hessen in Bard Hersfeld is a church ruin and in Eltville am Rhein you can see the monastery where the movie The name of the Rose was made with Sean Connery. The biggest castle ruin at the rhine river is Castle Rheinfels. In the middle of the Rhein nearby Kaub is a tiny castle you can visit by guide. The cathedral in Wiesbaden and Mainz is nice. Wiesbaden is from 19th century. Mainz cathedral was reconstructed. If you are in Wiesbaden check out the Neroberg.

Nice video and nice local SV Wehen Wiesbaden 26 football jacket. At first I thought it was going to be an uncomfortable race but you really took your time with each castle.

Thank you so much! Yes, we are really enjoying diving into Football here. It’s been quite fun! And we definitely tried to take at least some decent time at each location and really see it at least to a degree. Some truly amazing locations!

7:00 The problem is the English word castle. "Schloss" and "Burg" are not the same, but a "Burg" can also be a "Schloss" and vice versa. A castle can be a half-timber house or complete made of wood. This depends on the function and age of the building.

And yet, you have left out some castles like Burg Waldeck at the Edersee, Schloss Braunfels from the 19th century, Burgruine Runkel an der Lahn, Burg Kronberg and the Ronneburg.😊 by the way, Königstein castle will be the new host for the Halloween festival, carried out first time this year.

Just counting how many castles I could domin a day, recognizing the amount wouldn't be limited so much by lack of castles and also not too much y travelling, but mainly by making some decent pictures if each one...Also it depends a bit by definition of the word 'castle' , but as You've included pretty much everything from ruined medieval fortresses and garden follies to baroque and néo-renaissance Buildings from the 18th and 19th century, I could do at least around 10-20 within a diameter if about 10 Kilometers, as almost every village has one or two...and no, beside the facade, almost every castle uses half timber architecture, sometimes visible, sometimes hidden behind screens of stucco and carvings, as if buildings made out completely if stone orveven bricks would've been much to heavy, almost impossible to heat and simply unaffordable, as such a building would've been built not only out of normal rubble and mortar, but almost completely out of very well carved stone of the highest possible quality, which often had to be brought from dozens orveven hundreds of kilometers away...Almost impossible before trucks, autobahn and containerships, and even today extremely expensive. So no, parts in half timber occuring visible in castles normally aren't a later addition, but meant exactly to be like this on from the beginning. Also, as somebody who lives in a partly 700 year old house in the middle of the world heritage site of Bamberg, being born, raised and educated in buildings mostly highly historic two, and part of it in the castles, palaces, fortresses, city residences if Nobel families and palace like monasteries dotted all around, I can tell you pretty sure, You should think twice about moving in or even owning such an object, especially a castle, as ut us hillariously expensive to maintain the splendour, even and especially, when it is in ruins or your rounded by a lush garden or even park...So even renting a flat within which astonishingly often is possible), is rarely a cheap affair, including in plus, You'd most likely forget about huge parts if Your everyday modern comfort, as you'd rarely fund one with central heating, an elevator, climatisation or a modern bath in decent design...Also owning such houses, you're more servant of the house, as it serves you, simply as any and every time there's a very high possibility something brakes or goes wrong on a different way, and You've to be permanently there to keep it from falling into bits and pieces and if one renovatiion is done, there are a dozen others, all to be negotiated, surveyed, approved and surveyed by your local monument office, and all, without getting to much access to public founding. So there are about 25 to 40.000 castles around, but think twice before moving in,,or even own one...they'll be masters of your life...;-) I'd also like to recommend the upper Danube valley or Upper Franconia for Your next castle tour, as there are castles everywhere - and even have been more in the past, as only a fracture of all has survived time...

I for myself try to understand what is the history of a castle. Who build it and why. What battles have taken place there. What were the challenges to build that castle. If I just run through the ruins in a hurry like a Japanese tourist trying to see as many sightseeings as possible in 2 weeks in Europe, I will forget everything in a blink of an eye. Do you know anything about Königsstein.? What the purpose of this castle was? what happend there during WW II? Have you seen the impressive well in the center of the castle ? Maybe it's just me but if I just film a building or a picture superficially without understanding what's behind it, this is nothing I will remember still in two years and can think of how great it was. For instance 20 years back I've been to the Louvre for a whole weak and I still know a lot about the painters , pictures , sculptures and the epoch.

We did actually do pretty extensive research on each location after filming in order to condense a brief history via voiceover for each location. This video was intended purely as a fun experiment, but we actually spent probably a good hour or so at each location so as to try and take everything in a bit more. On a regular occasion, of course, we wouldn’t try and fit so many into one day. However, given how many you all are blessed to have here in Germany, we thought it would be a fun experiment to see how many we could feasibly explore in one day. We did also mention that in the video, and that we plan to try and do some videos in the future on individual locations with longer historical information so hopefully we will get to do that soon.

Germany has even more sights. E.g. Wuppertal, Bayer's birthplace. Aspirin, heroin, etc. But this is also the only city in the world where there are flying buses. The suspension railway 😁
