I always use 3 layers for everything. That’s how I learned to get a perfect middle ground for not too less and not too many coats. I’ve seen those Japanese painters paint crazy amounts of layers but that’s because they carve designs from the thick paint

Looks like they weren't sanding the metal before primer. Exactly like you said. Between coats and the final clear coats. Then fine sanding it going up each time so it is smooth and shiny. Dont forget to buff and wax in the end

That paint looks like it didn't bond to the primer. If it bonded the primer should be stuck to the paint and the metal would be all thats left. Saw that on a house door once had to sand it all then start at the wood.

It seems to me that the problem on this Impala is the prep, possibly it was sanded with too high of grit sandpaper making it too smooth with nothing for the paint to adhere to, possible chemical reaction, but I don't think it is a too much paint problem, but hey in the paint game anything can go wrong and usually does.

Your thumbnail pic caught my attention. I restored a '66 Mustang a few years ago with the exact same paint issues. Took many days and tons of razor blades to remove it all. I tried sanding, but that was pointless because it just clogged up the paper. Btw when I was 16, I took my driving test in a '62 Impala. Thanks for the video (and memories) 👍

I was taught for coats when it comes to most paint jobs. 1 x sealer, 2 x primer, 3 x color, 4 x clear. Graphics etc a little different

Adhesion issues. They should have applied a wet on wet sealer. But aside from coats, what about an estimate of how much in sprayable amounts? Clear tends to come in 1.25-1.5 gallon kits and usually has a good amount leftover for 2-3 coat jobs. What abiut basecoat though? Some say 2-2.5 quarts unreduced, some say 1 gallon unreduced, etc

When your sanding your creating mechanical adhesion… when you stack layers waiting the right amount of time in between coats yeah don’t over do it.

Hey Pharraway, interesting video and thanks for sharing your expertise with us. I'm sure some people think the more layers of paint you apply the better protection you will have but the opposite is true as you have just demonstrated. Best advice is to follow the TDS sheet for your product, my basecoat paint scheme normally needs 1 light coat one medium coat then a final wet coat with a drop coat and the TDS for my clear is just 2 coats and if you are going to flat and polish you can add a third coat after a longer (20mins) flash off before the third coat🙏🙏👍John UK

Great lesson, often wonder why some guy would use sooo much paint on a paint job. What about when it comes to candy what's too much?

on candy it will depend on the shade you are looking for but on the clear 3 to 4 coats is enough

Too many coats or not, it seems that the paint never adhered correctly to the substrate. It seems to me that there are other issues here besides just the paint and primer being thick.

Theres no primer to bond that paint. Why is the paint yellow underneath? Did they just sand the paint back in the day and then lay silver paint ontop. Shankin my head

The primer wasn’t sanded lol no fusion 3 coat of paint 3 clear dry then sand and clear again sand and buff. The gray scuff pad is not good enough. You have to use the red they probably used 1000 grit on the primer instead of 400.- 600 did they use wax and oil remover ? It could be a lot of things they could’ve done it in the winter with a torpedo heater he oils from it ouch . To cold to pain even

Just ran across this video. I'm not a professional painter (anymore), but I think you have multiple problems going on here. #1: the paint didn't adhere to the surface and #2: yes, that paint is way too thick. I don't see any evidence of primer or sealer on that hood, so you may want to address the prep process moving forward.
