This is the best channel I have found for a beginner to learn from! In the middle of repairing a 2000 Honda. This is my first time doing this kind of work. What I like is that you are "no non-sense" and get right to the point. You also use beginner level spray guns and other tools and you show they can work well. You also don't use a paint booth (like all home jobbers) and show how to deal with the dirt and fibers that we all have to deal with. Good Job!

I have a ‘15 Colorado that needs the roof top and hood repainted, and a canopy color-change. So shopping for materials and ran across your vid. Really great info here. I learned to paint in the mid-70’s back when lacquer was the norm. Centari was a favorite for years, but everything is now base/clear. I have never seen the 80% overlap, so that’s a new one. I tended to apply more paint per pass with less overlap, and still risked runs and sags. This is really great info and your finish looks fantastic. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing your skills with us Chris there is some very useful info here which will help me with my basecoat, mine used to go on quite dry and never felt smooth but a few weeks ago I started trying slow reducer (I used to use fast) in my base which has made a big difference as it's now nice a smooth which also helps my clearcoat finish👍John UK

I learned my lesson on using the right temp reducer the hard way, in 90° temp on a silver hood that I sprayed 3 time and I just couldn't get it smooth. I was so flippin frustrated! I flooded that hood with base and it felt like 180 grit sandpaper. Switched to slow reducer an it came out silky smooth. Appreciate the comment and support!

Another excellent video Chris and it is so nice that you get down to business with no crap background music edited in and we can hear the spray gun working. When spraying clear with the Sagola did you have any of your portable exhaust fans turned on? as you did not seem to getting much overspray fog It is so refreshing to see excellent work can be produced in an open workshop without an expensive spray booth and nominal dust (if not any) landing in the paint

It is always a pleasure to watch your informative videos. Let's suppose that the compressor is in keeping with air need of a HVLP spray gun. To spray a metallic base, which gun should be used, HLVP or LVLP?
@GarageNoise

I think an hvlp produces a slightly better finish for clear but it will also produce more over spray and use more materials. So it really just depends on your situation and needs. Appreciate your comment and support!

I've been restoring a table saw for a couple years now and this past weekend finally got to spraying the table saw base. I did primer and 3 top coats. Never used an HPLV sprayer before, but overall I'm satisfied with the result. However, there are some areas that do look a little dusty, such as at the edges, top and bottom. I'm debating putting a fourth at coat on just to establish a smoother finish overall. It would be worth it if the result is good, but what do you think? I know it's personal preference, but I've put a lot of time into this project so if one more coat with good application and settings would take it up a notch, I'm all for it. I can post a picture on my community page of what I'm talking about, if that would help anyone offer advice (no, I'm not soliciting traffic and views). Appreciate any feedback or tips. Thanks so much!
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise 5 ай бұрын
So, you spray just the primer so far? Or have you applied base and clear?
@ForestWoodworks
@ForestWoodworks 5 ай бұрын
@@GarageNoise Already did primer, and 3 coats of top coat. It's a table saw and the paint is an alkyd enamel, so there won't be any clear on it. I think 80% laid down good, just a couple nibs and some sand piling on the rest. Not horrible either, but still there on my baby. I think I found your video looking up about doing a light sanding before I attempt a fourth coat. Although I don't know how well the enamel will sand since it's got a different hardness than the automotive paint. And thanks so much for replying!

Quick question, if you had the vehicle completely disassembled would you paint doors, fenders, hood off the vehicle?
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise 6 ай бұрын
Not so much the Fender and doors, unless your cutting in the inside of those doors and fenders, then I Typically cut everything in first. And then put those panels on the vehicle. Now the hood. I like to spray that off the vehicle, especially a truck, because it's a lot easier to spray off the vehicle than it is on the vehicle. But really, It's all about what's most comfortable to you. You can paint those parts off the vehicle as long as you're painting is consistent and the same number of coats and you're spraying them at the same time.

Hi Chris, thanks for the brilliant videos. Just a question, What kind of paint do you use for Base? do you use standard basecoat or 1 or 2k basecoat? out of the three which do you prefer to use with 2k clear?
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise Жыл бұрын
I use the nason xl which is a urethane enamel. Not a true 2k base coat cause it has no hardner. My feeling is for durability basecoat doesn't matter as much as the clearcoat, that's what protects the paint. Others may disagree and I'm sure there's exceptions but it's worked out well for me.

I have to wet sand between primer base and between clears because they all grabs the microfiber towel like it's Velcro, nobody mentions. I have to do this in between every primer base and clear or base runs and i'm using premium rattle paint as their clear works fabulous. Anyway back to the base coats; Velcro again. I have 5 primer 5 base two or three touch ups wet 2-3000 more between those touch up coats more wet to smooth then wipe dry. I am now at the final base to do the entire panel door one more time wet sanding the entire door 3000 before clear coat one. Done this 4 times on a 8" x 30" corner cover because rustoleum clear came out water faucet thin, destroyed the door with runs overlapping 25% at best at 6" away @ 75 degrees sunny the 1st several coats. Why is it you and or many other here spray consecutively 1-2 primers 1-2 base 1 maybe two clear, in your vids like do nothing in between show the mirror image after compounded buffed and polished cleaned and waxed like really? Half the time you're overlapping at 90 100% two three times at 1 - 3 inches away. Not rattle but really?

I used Nason brand for my clear coat, waited about 24 hours before wet sanding. I used an aggressive 1000 grit paper and i literally could not remove enough material off. I though it would be soft since I didn’t allow a lot of time to dry so I actually started with a 1500 grit with medium to hard pressure, but hardly could remove any excess clear off. Should I wait another day or two and try wet sanding with 800?
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise Жыл бұрын
Is it really rough? With heavy orange peel? Nason is good clear. Be careful using 800 you could sand thru that clear how many coat of clear did you apply?
@richardjeun
@richardjeun Жыл бұрын
It’s smooth. Hardly any orange peel. The reason why I tired sanding it is because I had a drop of Gorilla glue drip onto the panel. I was gluing the Plastic bumper trim and the glue sagged down to the painted bumper. I couldn’t get rid of the glue only so I decided to wet sand and buff. I applied only 2 full wet coats of clear. Yes, it’s a damn good clear coat.

After you spray base, can you scuff it with 600 or 800 before clear coat,is that a thing do you have to ? Been doing single stage paint, my first base coat, clear coat, but I have cleared it before. Does base coat blend better, let's say I do my top first
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise 9 ай бұрын
You can sand with 6-800 just to remove dust and then you must add another coat of base.

So there is really no need for blending agents?
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise Жыл бұрын
Not on white or black or a lot of colors. Mostly I use a color blender or wet bed on difficult metallic colors like gold or silver. The other times you want to use it is in extremely hot temps it's very helpful then, to allow those metallic paints to lay in a color blender. It won't hurt to use it on everything if it makes you feel more comfortable in blending, but not necessary. Good question, I appreciate your comment and support!
