I love this format, but the most heartbreaking thing is that crazy wild decks can get some brutal losses against some terribly oppressive rares. Removal is bad in the tempo game that I think 75% of the format wants you to play, but the moment someone has one of these bombs you need removal ASAP or you lose.
@ogolthorp2 ай бұрын
I’ve had great success prioritizing removal and early plays while looking for the open lane. Removal and blockers makes it so you don’t get run over, and finding the open lane means you end up with synergy driven decks that provide mid-late game advantage. My best mouse deck was a midrange deck that had double builders talent to trigger valiant a bunch, 3 banishing lights, 2 bells, a carrot cake, and a couple take out the trash. It wasn’t trying to be super agro, it was trying to build up an advantage with synergy driven cards and not get run over. I think that should be your overall goal in this format.

Huh, you think so? I've found it to be less bomb-heavy than many past sets myself. Ton of rares that are _good_ but not broken.

Yeah, this is about what I've been doing with Green/Black; 3-3 or 4-3. It just feels so sensitive to draw order, and a little slow on the upkeep compared to Red/Black and Green/White. It can also be a bit vulnerable to hand disruption; Lost a few games as Green/Black to black decks packing discard effects. Can push past that with Stargaze, but I've actually decked myself looking for a good combination of cards to push me over the parity line.

i just had a GB draft where p1p1 Ygra, p1p2 Green Season, p2p1 Maha, p2p2 Inkeepers Talent. The plague wind combo of 1-shotting them with Green season blow up all artifacts and Ygra makes all other creatures food led to an easy 7-0.

Haha it happens on MTGO too. And irl. You just draft a lot more on arena so you tend to notice that. The problem is just the limited format, it's never as smooth as constructed and few decks have ways to fix or get through multiple empty draws.

Heaped harvest at 37:45 over the 3rd cultivator was a shockingly bad play. You decided getting a tapped land was better than playing an extra blocker (while at low life) that would immediately become a 6/7, which would also add a 3rd counter to your other two cultivators, and you didn’t even stop to consider it. That’s a pretty bad play from such a world class player. If you’re ostensibly trying to grind to mythic “as fast as possible,” then take your time to think a bit more and make the obviously better play rather than just draft more, because that was painful to watch. EDIT: the forager would have gotten 2 counters, not 3. My math was wrong and they would have all simply been 4/5’s, and 3 4/5’s is obviously better than 2 4/5’s and a ramp spell.
@brianh58442 ай бұрын
Foraging is not free, you do need food or cards in your graveyard to do it. He would have only been able to forage once if he plays 3rd cultivator, so it would have been a 3/4 and then his other two would have one less +1/+1 counter. Perhaps still the right play as it's the most tempo-positive play he can make, but not nearly as cut and dry. For me, the attack there was the main misplay, leaving himself dead on board to any interaction. He just shortcutted that his opponent would trade their 4/4, but opponent has no reason to block there when they just have to draw removal to win (if they don't have one already). I will say though that LSV definitely biases way too hard in favor of value over tempo and it's absolutely slaughtering his win % in these modern limited formats. The greedlord strategy worked well 10-15 years ago, but with how the game is now, the correct play is *usually* the one that leads to the biggest on-board advantage that turn, even if it costs you value in the long haul. There were multiple times in this draft where waiting to forage cost him because he lost a fight or an attack happened that otherwise wouldn't. I think the best way to describe the current era of LSV is that "he could not, in fact, keep getting away with it." Notice how that's not even really a meme anymore? For a long time it was because he would do these ridiculously greedy things, whether it's keeping sketchy lands or making sketchy splashes, and it would pay off for him. I think those things were correct for that era but Magic has changed a lot, even in just the last 4-5 years.

Posting this comment by @robertlazenby402 was a shockingly bad play. You decided ripping on the content creator was better than recognizing that there was only one forage available if the 3rd Cultivator were played, and you didn’t even stop to consider it. That’s a pretty bad comment from such an insipid commenter. If you’re ostensibly trying to contribute to the community “as much as possible,” then take your time to think a bit more and make the obviously better comments rather than just post more, because that was painful to watch.

@@brianh5844 the foraging is not free, but whenever a player with cultivator forages, the cultivator gets a counter. Playing another cultivator would have make it automatically a 4/5, so not a 6/7. It would have still netted two “free” counters from the other two foraging
@robertlazenby4022 ай бұрын
@@huntergarrett6668 lol nice try but it’s empty words. The play was bad as the Forager would have gotten 2 free counters and been a 4/5. I’m a big fan of LSV but he is not playing his best and seems to be on autopilot, and this is a good example. Idk why you’re white knighting for him when it was demonstrably and obviously the wrong play. You’re also wrong. He foraged twice and would still be able to forage twice, netting all 3 foragers 2 counters rather than 2 getting 2 counters, which is a big difference. The difference between us is I’m speaking truthfully, if bluntly. You’re just being a fool.
