We documented a week of egg collection from our chickens. Traditional chickens do not lay as breeds meant for commercial purposes, but they are doing great for us. And with the current egg prices, I think we are winning here. What do you think?
Thank you for watching our videos. We really appreciate it.

Thank you. We were so surprised that we got an average of 4 eggs a day, that’s definitely a lot for us.

Well done, guys. Are you going to leave a few eggs behind to hatch? My chickens eat their own eggs 😢. I want baby chickens.

Yes we are trying to that way we can have chickens that actually like us, unfortunately they lay in one nesting basket and we end up having many eggs in one. We fortunately don’t have chickens that eat their own eggs, we have heard that they may be calcium deficiency if that happens so maybe crush some of their shells and add them to their feed.

Great content. Just out of curiosity, how did one of your chickens loose it’s features?

We are not sure. We think that she got attacked by something like a dog. She also is very timid and scares very easy so something bad must have happened to her. Unfortunately the people we bought them from didn’t say, we decided to take her to see if she could improve and she seems to be the best layer.

Hi. We got them in a village close to our area in the Bushbuckridge area. We asked some people if they were willing to sell us chickens that were laying and they did. It was R50 each. We have also been offered a bunch for free but as you can see 6 chickens are a handful already 😂

Dear Sir: the Chicken missing feathers could be a sign of lack of protein. Even though they free range there may not be enough bugs for protein. Feed you chickens any kind of left over meat, hot dogs, sandwich meat, beef, chicken...the more meat the better. Chicken feathers are 95 precent protein. Even their combs will get redder. Chickens will eat the feathers off of other chickens to satisfly their need for protein. I even feed my chickens dog food with salmon. There are times when a chicken is picked at by other chickens and they will keep biting at the chicken...and when the chicken tries to get away...feathers are pulled out. That beat up chicken needs to be separated until it can heal, or the chicken will start to be eaten alive by other chickens. There are mean ass, and sweet ass chickens. The featherless chicken might be a sweet chicken being harrassed by a mean bad ass chicken. Those would have to be separated for good.

Hi thanks for the input. I mentioned in the video that we bought the chicken that way and we’re not sure what happened. Since she got here she has improved, got new feathers and we noticed she is definitely not getting abused at all. She is naturally timid and that may be due to the conditions where she was before, the fact that she is our best layer shows that the nutrition has been an improvement from where she was. We supplement their diet but these indigenous breeds are hardy and prefer to eat what they find. They have been gaining good weight and are healthier than they were when we got them.

@@user-zt1pq7hq6yno worries at all. Thanks so much for your advice, definitely was not aware that protein deficiency could result in the chickens abusing another. This means we have to be more vigilant and monitor them, this will also be helpful to share with others who are having that issue. So happy to have viewers from Georgia, sending love all the way from South Africa 😊

Are you planning to sell them?
@millennialhomesteader

That was not the plan. We just wanted chickens to lay and have eggs for ourselves. But we don’t eat close to 4 eggs a day so we will sell off some of them and try preserving them as well.
