It was probably the rotational core, as that's where the bulk of the Cube's mass is located. The side and corner pieces are largely hollow plastic...

Never been happier to be wrong, though now I'm curious to see how far the naked core would have penetrated with the same powered throw if it didn't give up so much energy to shedding the outer pieces...
