How many hours a day should I homeschool / How many hours a day do I homeschool / How long does homeschool take
Hey guys welcome back to every day blessings. If you’re new here my name is Nina I’m a homeschooling mom with five kids at home and six kids total. You’re on my channel I talk about all things Homeschool from tots to teens in real life, because God didn’t make me Pinterest perfect - I don’t even pretend to be.
Do you ever wonder how many hours a day someone homeschools? Does homeschool take as long as public school? Should you homeschool for as long as a public school day? How much homeschool is enough homeschool? Should I keep track of homeschool by hours or by days? Should I keep track of homeschool period? What actually counts as homeschooling? Is homeschooling only book learning? Should I schedule in more homeschool activities? Are field trips considered homeschooling?
So Many Questions!!
I decided to track how many hours we spent doing school on a typical day. I was SHOCKED! I assumed that we were doing about four hours of school a day. BOY WAS I WRONG!! We average about 8 hours a day! Not all of if feels like school though. That’s why It didn’t seem like we were doing school so long.
I hope if you are considering homeschooling your children you found this video helpful.

Pages and Pencils would be such a cute name for a workbook or a handwriting book.

I think we need to differentiate life and specific skills from actual classes required for homeschooling. E.G. NYC kids probably won't use homesteading skills (maybe just some home economics basics). The CORE still seems to be about 2 to 3 hrs...everything else is at the discretion of the parents..may choose to do gymnastics 3 hrs daily instead.

Exactly. Homeschooling is not all just text books. It's life long learning. The best way to learn something is to be able to apply it to your life and your current situation. If you have a child active in gymnastics and participating in competitions that could be a whole area of study. It goes beyond the physical act of gymnastics. The health, determination, learning about different muscles, physics...etc.

What do your kids learn on Epic and Time For Learning? Is any of it considered history or science? What kind of tasks do they do when homesteading? I have a garden, so I could have them help with this or maybe we could do some plant identifying.

On Epic they learn so so much. There are so many books for them to choose from. Right now they are reading a lot about nature. Definitely science! There are a lot of history books, biographies and so so much more. On Time for Learning they learn math, science, history, and language arts. This is really nice because I can have one or two children on the computer doing their schoolwork while I am working one on one with another child who needs a little extra encouragement in one area or another. When we are homesteading that could look like a lot of different things. Definitely gardening. We talk about where the plants would grow best. What zone we are in compared to the rest of the country. We look at what soil the plants thrive in, what sort of insects are good for plants and what will eat our goodies before we can get to them. We talk about how much we should plant if we want to preserve for winter, we talk about finances and do the math of how much it costs to grow food vs purchase store bought.

Nina how do you like Time 4 Learning for kindergarten-2nd grade? My boys are using it for 4th and 8th, they seem to like it. Just not sure about my daughter. She is struggling to read so I’m not sure if it would be good for her or not.

My kindergartner and pre k love it. My 3 year old can’t wait he sneaks on his sisters account. My pre k daughter is almost reading and my kindergarten daughter struggles. I would say try it and see how it goes. My kindergartner goes back to the pre k lessons for fun and she enjoys it.

So you do 8 1/2 hours of school a day. So you don't work. Other than being a Homeschooling mom, and don't get me wrong I think that is work too, I'm referring to the 9-5 job but you don't get paid to be a home school mom. How are you paying for 6 kids? What does your husband do for a living?

I work from home. I am with my children all day. My husband works out of the house as well as from home. We live below our means. 😊
