Imagine Hera seen Mel purge her boons in favour of Zeus over and over again 🤣. Hercules will say her only one thing "run"

EDIT: I am mistaken, Duo Boons are indeed in trials. It appears to be a bug. Thank you to rikerwashere and Z4Zuluuu for the correction. Carry on with your Greek myth lore dives at your leisure. Trivia time! Pomegranates, known as 'Sides' in Ancient Greek after the name of the colonia city on the Turkish coast where the Greeks first found and cultivated them, were originally seen as symbols of marriage and union in Ancient Greece, especially loss of virginity and consecration of marriage. One of the oldest myths about the origins of Pomegranates is that Aphrodite planted them as her sacred fruit on the island of Kypros (Cyprus). Hera, being goddess of marriage and women, was also associated with pomegranates, sometimes being depicted holding one in place of a divine orb of the style that kings hold in Medieval European paintings. Since pomegranates were used to seal/consumate marriages, they were in a way a staff of Hera's office. Even after the Christianization of Greece and Italy, an altar to 'Our Lady of the Pomegranates' was established at an altar in a chapel in Sicily, suggesting a Christianized version of Hera worship tied to pomegranates existed at that time. To this very day Greek newlyweds and new homeowners will be gifted pomegranates to place upon their family shrines (devoted to Christian figures, mind) as symbols of luck, fertility and success, meaning Hera snuck a fast one past the Orthodox Greek church. But pomegranates are most famously associated with Persephone as a symbol of her own office, which is why Mel refers to them as 'my mother's power' in the games when grabbing them. Persephone broke her fast during her imprisonment by Hades within the Underworld by eating four or six pomegranate seeds (depending on how far North the region where the myth was being told was and therefore how long winter lasted). This was a violation of _Xenia_ --one of the most sacred Greek traditions, which is that hospitality is sacred above all for both host and guest. A host must always provide and a guest must always respect the sanctity of the host's home. Eating the seeds effectively put Persephone in debt to Hades as a kind of theft, thereby creating a magical contract binding her to the Underworld. Given its symbolism in the times, it also was a sign of consecration of marriage and loss of innocence, flagging to Greek readers that Persephone was submitting to the contract of marriage with Hades despite being unhappy with the arrangement. Persephone's deed was reported to Hermes and Hades by Hades' gardener, a chthonic demigod named Ascalaphus with a nymph for a mother. Demeter, as she is prone to when dealing with mortals, took this quite well, and reacted by burying Ascalaphus alive under a boulder in the Underworld for all eternity. Heracles took pity on the poor man and rolled the rock away, to which Demeter then quite reasonably reacted by turning him into an eagle-owl as a second punishment since her first had been foiled. Hades then adopted Ascalaphus out of pity as his divine messenger bird and sacred animal companion, similar to Zeus' eagle or Athena's smaller owl species. Back to Persephone and Hades, Persephone's consumption of the Pomegranate was such a famous and iconic part of her mythos that the Pomegranate gradually shifted from being Aphrodite or Hera's divine fruit associated with marriage to being Persephone's divine symbol of office. Soon, the myths around the pomegranate began to shift to include new divine powers for the fruit. Persephone's mystery cult included secrets related to consuming pomegranates and the afterlife, which suggests to me that her followers were eating pomegranates close to the moment of death in hopes of striking a divine contract with Persephone to be brought to her corner of the afterlife. Much of Persephone's mystery cult worship came from Greeks hoping for a more pleasant afterlife than the dull and joyless Asphodel, after all. In this capacity the pomegranate also became a symbol of foodstuff for the dead, consumed by dead souls the way the Gods ate nectar and ambrosia. A new version of the pomegranate's origin sprang up, where Persephone had the pomegranate spring up from the blood of her lover/foster son Adonis, the most beautiful man ever born, when he was gored to death by a boar sent by Ares (or Ares himself disguised as a boar, depending on the version). This other origin for pomegranates conveniently forgets that Persephone was only in the Underworld herself because she'd already consumed pomegranate seeds, and the whole crux of the myth about Adonis is conflict over him spending time between Persephone and Aphrodite in the heavens and the underworld, so the continuity is shall we say a bit of a mess. Nevertheless, this new interpretation of pomegranates meant that their very specific function as a symbolic representation of the consummation of marriage grew into a more vague association with power over life, death and the contracts the Gods create related to these universal constants. Poms, then, became divinely powerful both as agents of life and as agents of communing with the dead. Even in modern day Greece, a dish made from boiled wheat and pomegranate seeds called koliva is eaten during memorial services, funerals, Saturdays during which prayers for the dead are uttered and days honouring specific saints. Individuals will shape the koliva into a funerary mound, dust it with powdered sugar, carve the dead's initials into the dish, place a candle in the position of the headstone and then light it and utter a prayer for the dead's soul to find grace and forgiveness in God's care. The assembled then eat the koliva as a way to maintain their connection to the dead. All of this seems very similar to the rituals of pomegranate-eating performed by Persephone's mystery cults eons before, at least to me. A way to connect to the dead by eating food meant to be offered to them, and pray for them and the living both to find peace in a happy afterlife. In the Hades games, Persephone;s connection to pomegranates is more humble and simple than seeing them as a sacred symbol of her divine office. She simply brought them to the Underworld with her when Zeus kidnapped her on Hades' (unwilling) behalf and planted them in her garden in the House of Hades, at which point they grew and spread all over the Underworld. The Hades Poms don't have any association with marriage or her capture in the Underworld, she just finds them to be beautiful and respects them as tough and adaptable, just like she imagines herself to be. Despite this, the seed-eating myth is referenced at the end of the first game. The conflict of the postgame is resolved by Persephone lying to her mother that she 'has' to stay with her husband and child for four months of the year because of the 'curse' of the underworld's pomegranates. Thus, she can only spend eight months with her mother (how sad) and must go back way down to Hadestown for the remaining four months. This doesn't mean poms have no power in Hades, though. Obviously they are used to give us a little top-up on specific Boons. But why? Well, within the lore of the games each Pom contains some of Persephone's divine power, so her kids get access to a bit more of her godly magic when they eat them. But you can also tie this back to their original function in Greek myth, too. Here, they are a divine covenant not between her and Hades, her and the dead or two newlyweds building a home together, but between Zag or Mel and whoever has granted them the Boon they choose. Eating the Pom reinforces their connection to this Boon, and with it, reinforces their connection to their relatives, which is the core theme of the game. Thus, their mother brings them not closer to death or marriage but to their family and to finding and saving her, keeping the symbolic functions of Poms in the game the same as they are in Greek Myth while altering the lore to be more centered around Persephone herself.

Not sure if it was an intentional change, but you can definitely get duos in trials in Hades 2. I even managed to get the duo for the two gods that showed up in my trial (Aphro & Demeter IIRC). I'm assuming they'll fix it at some point.

Trials give Legendary boons. Natural Selection run taught me that. And it's better because there's no duo boons offered. I hope they make it that there will be a chance of trials in every biome. That would help a lot!
