I made a sword too. I was absolutely proud of it. It was made out of 8670. My wife would never let me hang it up on the wall, and I poked two holes in sheet rock, just carrying it around the house. It was well balanced. I wound up just giving it away. My wife really and truly didn’t want it in the house, and I wasn’t going to win. The hand sanding on it though.😮

Yes we as knifemakers earn the $0.03 cents per hour labor we make off of our products. We can not charge our money per hour shop time as not everyone can afford the 100+ hours we put into a lot of our knives. My shop rate for anyone who walks up and asks me to make anything is the same rate as it was back in 1994 $65.00 per hour and that barely pays for the light bill, propane and all the sanding belts, sheet sandpaper and the material used to make even a simple mono steel knife. People need to understand that we also have a life and eat too. We as knife makers don't want to make a retirement pension off of one knife, but we would like to make a small profit off it so we can afford to make more knives. Honestly we do care for our customers more than one would think especially when that customer comes back for another knife or axe, hammer or anything else. Good video and really good answers.

Possible dust grinding tent help idea. Had a friend who needed something similar for painting cheap semi long term. Used plastic like you. But he cut fan sized holes for 20" cheap box fans blowing out. He put 20" pleated Furnace filters in the back to catch overspray. After that i have done the same thing at home as a air cleaner and works pretty good.

I'm definitely of the same opinion about the fantasy knives thing, and for me even swords really. I definitely appreciate the craftsmanship, and everything that goes into them. And dont knock anyone who does. But for myself, i just tend to stick to practical blades that can be used in the modern world, and hopefully perform well. I get people I know in person, that arent knife people, and not makers. That come and ask if I've made a sword, or throwing knives and all these random sorts of crazy things. I just don't have much personal interest in doing. My answer is usually something like "I'll let the people that care about that kind of thing make those".

functioning lungs are far better than a beard ...nobody wants COPD. The way I see it is if you hit your finger with a hammer every day while working you would do something about it very quickly so breathing metal and other nasty fumes you need to deal with it just as quickly, your lungs are way more important than one finger ...or a beard. I have ear problems that were not caused by working but I can assure you if I would have been avoided it by wearing PPE I sure as hell would not have it now.
