Well that's a silly comment. He did say 'I studied language X' to answer the question about which languages he was exposed to. But if you have ever learned foreign languages, you know that studying doesn't mean speaking fluently. I actually like that he doesn't pretend to speak 25 languages while he does his videos.

I think most people that can actually speak English (whereas it's not their mother tongue) have leant it by themselves. I live in Ukraine and the majority of my English speaking acquaintances have done it playing videogames, watching KZbin or reading articles (or maybe books). It's nearly impossible to learn a language if you are only studying in classes.

Oh! I learned English as a second language and German as a third language too. Since you’re in Highschool taking an exchange program is a great option (I took one school year exchange program in Germany). Immersing yourself in the environment is the best way to pickup a language. Also don’t worry, most exchange programs test your English proficiency before entering anyway, not the official language of your country of destination. I wish you luck in your language learning journey 😉

^when KZbin is an actual job, it can be a way of getting money to pour directly into KZbin without losing money or to gain enough that a normal job would pay. Just googling Patreon, it's main focus seems to be just that: to help creators get a sustainable income while doing what they love. If by begging, you mean "asking to support me so that I am able to continue to do what I love" then yes, it will always be begging. At the other end of the spectrum, you may have people who make a ton of money already (those are rare and far between) that ask for support. At this point, they won't need to "beg" (in the traditional sense of the word), because they make enough money not to need people to individually support them. I think there's a difference between asking and begging. There are lots of people out there that would love to financially support creatives doing what they love other than buying their products, watching their videos, going to their events. Patreon is a site for THOSE people. It's not for those that don't want to pay extra. Also, often times, there are special rewards creatives can give back to those that put in extra to support them. Some people may beg to support them, but I think that's pretty rare. The people that can benefit the most from begging don't want to and those that don't need the extra money don't need to beg.

I've studied ten languages: French, Italian, German, Bengali, Russian, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Latin and Ancient Greek. Only my French is fluent though, and some of them I am so rusty I couldn't really have a conversation. The reasons are as follows: French and German: studied in school, and will be living in Germany next year. Latin/Greek: studied at school then university. Bengali: family language, although I never acquired full fluency or reading/writing knowledge, so am relearning it from a book. Not an easy language so I'm very far from fluent as yet. Russian: Studied at uni as a minor (was rather strange when I had Greek, Latin and Russian classes on the same day: three classes, three different alphabets I had to write in! I don't usually get mixed up between languages but for about a year afterwards I kept accidentally writing a terminal sigma * whenever an English word ended in an S.) Italian: Used to go on holiday there a lot and also had an Italian flatmate, so I just kind of picked it up with the help of a phrasebook. Subsequently worked on Medieval Italian texts as part of my degree and read some Italian secondary sources with the help of Google Translate and picked up all the free Italian newspapers you get lying around London. Gaelic: in reality Scottish and Irish Gaelic are basically the same language and I only recently started studying them, so they don't really count. *The letter S in Greek, called sigma, has two different forms depending on where it comes in the word, so you have to be careful of that.

Thanks! Well, I know what you mean. But you know how it goes - I'm being seen publicly and I don't want to give anyone the impression that I'm trying to be the language "master" or "guru" because there will be people who say "Prove it!" or "Show me your skills. Show me that you can speak all those languages right now on camera" etc. and I'd rather not even play that game. I want to enjoy languages and not really worry about having to live up to the image of a "master" or something. With that said, I think people can see that I'm generally not talking out of my ass. :)

That's really cool! Throughout my life, I've studied Spanish, Russian, German, Portuguese, Old Norse (fan of Viking culture), and Polish and was raised with spoken Mandarin and I'm a native English speaker. Of the languages listed, I kind of chose what worked for me/ what I would find most universal. So in regards to investing a ton of time, I am actively studying Russian, German, Portuguese (I often crosstrain this with Spanish because of similarities), spoken Mandarin (I think it would be wise for me to begin the process of learning to write), and I may even pick up Afrikaans as I've heard it is the easiest to learn as an Anglophone. I think the main trouble with language learning is finding people that can practice with you.

Hi Paul. I enjoy watching these videos. Thanks for making them. I don't normally comment on you tube channels, but these videos are very informative, interesting, and provide a nice small break from language learning. A little about myself - I am an original monolingual older gentleman (Texas) whose hobby and passion has been learning languages on my own for many many years, dating back to the short wave radio listening of the 1970s. 16 languages studied total over several years. I'm currently maintaining about 10 of them. My main goal now is polyliteracy in reading. Speaking is a different "ball game", requiring other people's time and interaction, and I've noticed that in speaking with the same exchange partner over a long period, you tend to keep talking about the same things. I find the fun in learning and juggling so many languages is the continuous refinement of your own process for faster vocabulary acquisition and long term memory retention. While there are so many ways and good programs to use, the three basic rules I go by is (1) consistency and in short sessions (2) a system to recall new material from last session and (3) an imagination to stay passionate. I believe language learning is infinite. You'll never get bored, as there is always something new to learn.

It's incredible that you know so many languages, kudos to you, Paul. I know how to speak well Portuguese (native), English, Spanish, Catalan. I understand written French (It's a language you study at school but no one actually uses). I've been trying to learn Dutch and Esperanto.

Natively, I’m a Russian speaker, and I learned English when I was around 13 because it’s a very largely spoken and written language. My second language was Spanish, because moving to America it was another largely spoken language with English. And my third and probably my last language i learned and will ever lear n was Arabic.

I'm fluent in Russian and German. I've also studied French for some time. It'd be possible for me to do some basic to mediocre conversations but that's it. A few years ago I wanted to learn Japanese but I gave up because of the Kanji. Still, I may be able to do some easy sentances if absolutly necessary. Now I'm learning traditional Arabic, wish me luck. But actuatlly I'm more interested in scripts than in languages. I know following writing systems fluently: Cyrillic, Greek, Hiragana, Katakana, Hangul, Hebrew, Cree (best script of all time) and Phonecian. Now I'm learning Arabic aswell. People always tell me that it's dumb to learn a writng system if you're not willing to study the whole language but I just like to know a decent amount of different alphabets etc.

Big fan of yours Paul. I'm just a boring English-speaking American, but I took 2 years of German in college to prepare for a semester I studied at TUD in Darmstadt. I'm now in the process of trying to reactivate my German fluency, which is how I found your channel. Keep making awesome videos! (I also took 4 years of Latin in high school, so although I don't speak any Romance languages, but I can pretty much figure out Spanish, Italian and French while reading.

I would also very much be interested in a video about Hungarian. It just came out for Duolingo so I've been playing around with it a bit and from what I've seen already it's definitely like nothing else on Earth.
@vuurniacsquarewave50918 жыл бұрын
Charles Cal Exactly. If you bump into something familiar it's because of the effect the neighboring slavic languages had on it, as well as German. Like the modal "muszáj" (must) apparently came from the German "muss sein" (must be) and so on.
@aleksandrnestrato8 жыл бұрын
za909returns Wow, Hungarian! The language that has 26 cases and doesn't have prepositions. :-) I'm very interested in getting acquainted with its structure and grammar, but I don't have time to really learn it.
@vuurniacsquarewave50918 жыл бұрын
***** That's one of the common misconceptions, a lot of these "cases" are equivalents of prepositions, like "-ban/-ben" are "in", "-ba/-be" are "into", "-hoz/-hez/-höz" are "to"... the difficult thing is that almost all suffixes have more than one form, and you need to pick the right one based on "vowel harmony". So "in car" can only be "autóban", and never "autóben". Also, there are post-positions, like "alatt" (under) which FOLLOW the word they are connected to, unlike in indo-european languages. "Az asztal alatt" -> literally: "The table under"

My first language is Malay and we all learn English as our second/third language at school. I took Arabic classes for 3 years as an additional language, but gave up when it came to super long essay lmao. Then I learned Japanese because I started to watch anime (poor excuse but it was a start lol). After that I took language classes (Japanese, Korean, French, Spanish, Russian, Turkish, Thai) in college (I even extended my sem because I simply love languages ;p). But… I’ll never claim myself to be fluent in any of those languages, especially when we only have 3 levels to complete each language course so there is only so much we could learn in 1 ½ years (& as you can see my English is kinda bad for someone who learned it from school haha) & but at least I can say it was not a waste of time or anything... I do found it useful at times, like IDK, when I listen to foreign languages songs, watching foreign language shows without subtitles, or travelling or… well, googling stuff in foreign languages, you know, like stuff that your college/company or even your country might block if you googled it in your first language/English… hahaa j/k.. - but I’m serious it worked ok lol. So yeah, I may not know much, but I’ll manage… After all I learned them just for fun. Like, I just love how I can compare the differences/similarities between each languages that I learned while learning another new language, or the ability to write/read something in a script other than the Latin one, it just gave me this weird satisfaction, so. :)

Well, I'm Indonesian. I speak Bahasa Indonesia, English, and Sundanese (a local language in West Java Province which has Bandung as its provincial capital city and it is a city that held an Asian African Summit). I understand Malay if I interact with Malaysian people or watch them in local television. I studied Japanese at High School. I studied to read or recite Quran verses in Arabic, However, Arabic is still a really hard language to learn, we just taught to recite Quran verses. I am studying Turkish a little bit because of their colossal series Magnificent Century and Magnificent Century Kosem.... LOL.... Despite that, in Indonesia some High school can teach another foreign language beside Japanese. There are some High school which taught Arabic(not just Quran Recital), French, Deutsch, and Chinese. Since elementary school till high school, we studied language such as Sundanese( It depends on what province that you live, if you live in east and central java, or Yogyakarta special region, maybe you need to studied Javanese in school) but in if you studied in Jakarta maybe you don't study any local languages. I love your channel. I'm sorry for this long comment. Thank you

I speak English. I started studying French at age 12 and continued for 8 years. I studied Spanish for 6 years. I studied Latin, Portuguese, Italian and Tagalog for 1 year each but I have forgotten most of the Tagolog. I will say that I had a coworker from outside Manila who conversed with me in his dialect, Chavacano, and told me that I was pretty fluent in it since it is a creole Tagolog Spanish hybrid. I did short courses in Russian and Greek, Arabic, Korean and Japanese but wouldn't say that I can speak them. Self taught a bit of German but again I would not say that I can speak it. In my 40s I studied Cantonese for 3 years and followed up with 3 years of Mandarin in my 50's. Now I'm pushing sixty and need to learn Thai! 2 years in and I have focused primarily on speaking. Still need to learn to read and write. I am not talented at this, it had just always interested me and I never worked in a field where language was my primary source of income except a stint in Texas when I taught ESL in a little private school on the Mexican border in the early 80's. My ears are going deaf and I have a good case of CRS. Almost all the Chinese characters I learned to write have evaporated from my memory. Ditto Hangul, Katakana and Hiragana. Being a language lover is definitely an uphill battle and what you don't use you lose. it's very disconcerting to stare at a menu in Chinatown and KNOW that you used to be able to read it! But the full meaning is flitting around the shadows of your memory like the algebra and calculus formulas from decades ago. The good news is that studying languages will forestall the development of dementia if you have any propensity to develop that condition. And like anything, what you do for a long time, you will eventually get very good at. I am a dilettante. In reality, though, studying language and culture for a lifetime has taught me how much we are all alike. A lot of mistrust arises from the inability we have to communicate with one another. Reach across the linguistic divide with a few friendly words and you will quickly build a bridge of trust. Gens una sumus.

I know how to speak 4 languages or know them very well. Those are Bengali (Mother Tongue), English (1st Language outside home), Urdu/Hindi and Farsi. When I am at home I mostly(99.9%) speak Bengali. Although my mind speaks English. English is used everyday whenever I go outside. Urdu/Hindi, I learnt it through internet and media (Bollywood and Indian/Pakistani Soap Operas). It is not a surprise for people from my country to know Urdu/Hindi because most people from my country watch Bollywood and Hindi Soap Operas than local ones. I know how to read both script, more better with Urdu because it is hard to recognise some words in Devanagari Script. Urdu is much easier to read because I know how to read Arabic script since I read the Quran. I mostly speak with my friends from India and Pakistan. Sometimes I speak it with myself to improve. But I would not really say I am fluent but I will be in the future. Farsi, the dialect I learnt is Dari Farsi because of my love for Afghanistan. On of my forefathers do come from there. It was difficult at first because I was practicing writing. That does not work. I watched a video of how to master many languages quickly in few months, I thought it was bulls. I only watched half because it was very long. The methods were not hard and it worked. Again I still say I am not fluent, I just know and understand it well. I also know how to read it and write it especially with Nastaliq script. I used to be bad at it but now I can write it well. I pass my time doing Nastaliq calligraphy. I never speak this language daily with anyone but myself same case with Urdu/Hindi. However I have spoke it to few Afghans but I used only phrases because at that time I did not know it well. Language that I know a bit well are Pashto (read and write), Punjabi(Shahmukhi Script) and Assamese(Just Understand only because it is close to Bengali)

Always been fascinated by languages and dialect. Got a degree in Spanish, with some Portuguese, Sort of kept up my French--enough to hold proper conversations, brushed up my school Latin recently --love it now but hated the teachers in school. Had a love affair with Arabic--and will continue once I retire. Speak Welsh fluently---first language with my kids (had to learn it though--and it's hard using a language other than your mother tongue with your kids. --pulled it off reasonably well)Can understand some Irish conversations and can read with varying success in the language--only speak bits and bobs. Learning German at the moment--and finding it a slap in the face--although I love it. I don't know whether it's a good or a bad thing to be a butterfly with languages--looks like there's a lot of us though--not least the wonderful Paul. Thanks for your great videos!

"Fluent" is such an unclear word that I don't even think about which languages I'm "fluent" in. I don't like to think about my level at all, to be honest, because then languages aren't fun anymore, it becomes all about proving something. In any case, I don't want people to think I'm some amazing polyglot. I'm really not. I just find languages and linguistics very interesting.

🇩🇪 German - Mother tongue 🇬🇧 English - Fluent as I learned it in school starting from the 5th grade. 🇱🇺 Dutch - Can read it almost effortlessly. Speaking is a bit tricky for me, though. Basic conversation should be possible if it‘s not too fast. 🇩🇰 Danish - See Dutch. Having a conversation is something I never got to try, but I think it would be very hard for me. 🇳🇴 Norwegian - See Danish. Unfortunately my vocabulary is a bit weak here. 🇸🇪 Swedish - Had a course in university and always confuse Swedish words with Norwegian words. 🇫🇮 Finnish - Learned some stuff like basic phrases and counting 14 years ago out of interest. 🇨🇳 Chinese - I know a few phrases and recognizes a hundred characters or so, that‘s all. As you can see, I really like languages. Unfortunately I‘m not very good at „mastering“ a language.
