So based on this, it looks like it might cost 33.5 miles / 38.6mpg. Assume a normal 50mpg, cost is the 11.4mpg. This works out to about 0.2 gallons for the charging; 0.67 - 0.87. The cost per liter in Canada is about $1.60 Canadian, which would translate to about $1.95 for the 20% to 80% charge. Waiting till you get home, a charge at home based on 0.12 cents a kwh plus admin fees, let's say about 0.20 cents. A full charge (0 to 100) would probably be about $2.70; 60% = $1.62. I don't think I would do this very often. If there was a power outage and I could supply power to my house, ya I would go for a drive to recharge the battery.

So glad you did the math because that's where my brain went initially to see how it would impact the MPG's in charge mode because ya know - law of conservation of energy and such!. I honestly think this is a huge benefit for my type of driving on long road trips and camping a lot. I don't own a toyota yet so I'm not fully familiar with charge mode, does it utilize regenerative breaking to help charge the battery? If so, I think of some of the LONG downhill mountain passes I did coming through the western states. The idea of flipping on charge mode and using those long natural downhills to recharge the battery is cool - although I guess you use a fair bit of energy to get up to that point in the first place.

I didn't even know it has a charge option? So you can plan your trips where you'll be going up hill to use battery and when coming down, use charging mode? I mean a mountain miles long

Charge mode is more for if the destination has a parking garage or similar where you want to use ev mode later inside the garage or waiting for stop and go traffic in the city. It will charge it up using the gas engine on the way to destination. Good for going from one parking garage to another where normally it will run on ev in transit and the battery would be almost dead when you get there. If the destination has a charger thats fine but if not, and its a parking garage where you dont want to sniff your own tailpipe waiting in line with the window down to use the parking garage toll machine, or after you park, or while you are ordering fast food, or using an atm, with the window down then its a nice feature. All the hybrids have regenerative braking on downhills, plug in prime or not. This is not about regen braking, its about spinning up the gas engine and using more fuel to charge the battery like an alternator does in a normal gas car because you want to use all electric ev mode later

If you poke around in the menu (the menu you can access from the steering wheel not the one on the big screen) you can switch from simple combined view to dual view. You can also scroll through what’s displayed with the up and down arrows

Waste? No, Evens out. 40MPG, 33.5 miles for a 84% charge. Then drive 21 miles on electric. Win win if you needed it. I use it.

The option is there if you wanted to.. I never figured out if it was worth it, I figured if I was driving highway speeds anyway, why not charge it?
