How many papers in a PhD?

This video tries to answer the question about how many papers should be published in a PhD to get a foundation postdoc position or a faculty position. However, various caveats are given about how a selection committee looks at papers and issues of journal quality, author order, salami slicing are addressed. An optimal number of papers in a PhD is proposed.

Spot on. ``My son had only 2 papers in mathematical physics, co-authored with his guide and one publishesd in Springer Nature. I was worried, but he got a PostDoc in UC Berkeley.

My congratulations to him and you. It is all subjective. Quality matters more than quantity. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I know some people who got postdoc with conference papers only. Thanks for the motivation, sir! I am quite motivated and happy after watching your video today. For post-doc selection interviews, they usually ask for 3 representative writings. I have not written any systematic review yet and plan to write one. I am not very sure that whether they will appreciate a systematic review(Prisma). I hope in your future videos, you enlighten us on having a strategy for sharing the three sample publications to the professor.. Best regards, Devendra

Thank you sir. Sir what if we have included our supervisor as second author will that impact negatively? I have one paper as single author in a top journal of my area and other is under review under oxford journal of which i have included my supervisor as second author. Does including supervisor as secondary author, impact negatively?

No it is expected that a PhD student will have his PhD advisor’s name. That does not matter. What effects sometimes is if the paper was written with several co-authors. Impress the Professor with your CV! kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZ-7i4xtaJVmb68

Sir Papers labeled under Conference proceedings can be counted as publication or is it valid as publication?

Yes conference papers are ok and count but journal papers are preferred by selection committees as they are peer reviewed. For postdoc positions conference papers may be enough in some cases. But for faculty jobs journal papers are often needed.

Hello sir, i am doing phd in mechanical engineering from india and one of my supervisor is from foriegn country, i got a opportunity to do work with my co supervisor in the forign in one of the project. Sir for postdoc it will be help for me . Actually i have a gap between my masters and phd, i work as a assistant professor for 5 years.

Yes having international experience and references is always useful. Western countries don't have age restrictions for PhD or postdocs and your experience may be considered useful in some cases.
