Hello everyone. I'll be graduating from university this December, and I plan on making a lot of videos. I've been gone for quite a long time. There are a lot of reasons as to why, and one major one is that I've had to put my education first. That being said, I hope this "remaking" of an old video that I really wanted to redo is enjoyable. Take care, and feel free to leave comments. I'll be getting back to as many people as I can over the course of the weekend.

When I was about 14 I read a book by Jostein Gaarder called "Kabalmysteriet" (English: "The Solitaire Mystery"). There was a minor part in it where the dad tells his son about how about half of the Norwegian population (I've seen estimates that varies from a third to 60%, but Gaarder wrote "about half", so let's just go with that) was wiped out by the Black Death from 1349 to 1353 (more or less, the exact years are still debated), many of which were young children. He then went on with the whole "you have two parents, four grandparents, eight great grandparents and so on", and tells his son to imagine just how many of his ancestors that would've been kids during the Black Death. He then points out (to his son's bewilderment) that of all these ancestors, not a single one of them died from the plague as a child. What bothered 14 year old me a bit (and honestly five/six-years-later me a little too) was that he didn't do the math, so I decided to figure it out myself (insert image of smug fourteen year old here)! After doing some math -- wich was basically just powers of two with an estimate of four generations per century -- I figured out that the youngest generation alone of my ancestors from 1349(ish) should consist of 67,108,864 people. Should I mention that the whole Norwegian population around the turn of the 14th century was around 400,000 people? I did realize that any contact with other nations would greatly increase the number of actually possible ancestors, but this was still the day I truly learned not only how unbelievably many great*n grandparents I have, but also the importance of inbreeding. I think I heard somewhere that if you take two random persons from where ever in the world, they will be at least 19th cousins. (Here's an imaginary cupcake for those of you who actually read that essay of a comment)
@thinkfact7 жыл бұрын
That's really interesting. And in all reality, it reminds me of my saying that we are all the children of tragedy. All humans alive today are a result of the survivors of horrible events having kids. And those horrible events definitely shaped a magnitude of people. And in terms of being 19 cousins with everybody, it seems completely believable. Think about how much genetic information was brought to Eastern Europe by the Mongolians and subsequently transmuting throughout numerous populations there. Macedonia and its interaction with regions on the way to India. You have the Islamic caliphate send their interactions with each other throughout Africa, Europe, and Asia. Africa. European in Australia. Micronesians from southeast Asia making their way to Madagascar. Native Americans making their way over in multiple waves. Then the craziness that is the Americas in general. True isolation is hard to believe, especially if you're dealing with the fact that humans move and you take into consideration deep time. Great comment, and it's always nice to hear from you! Take care!

I am really happy you brought attention to that! I think it's easy to only take in the consideration leaders or even only people in our direct family lines. But in all reality, "it took a village," and that is exactly how I would say it too. All of those people who did those very important jobs play a significant role to shape who is here today. And being attention to that is definitely the right thing to do! Thanks for the comment, have a good one!

You could hypothetically work it out if you took the full population into account. Hence, you then do some fancy math with projections of population growth over the years, then do some long division, some really long division haha. I think we will be able to answer this question really easy when we have advanced machine learning and AI that can simply run simulations. I recently got into your video's, you deserve so much more attention however sometimes less is better. I hope you're still making videos, I love your stuff.

I heard someone claim that the radicalization of Islam can be blamed on incest because the behaviors that make radicals radical match the behavior of children of incest. I think it's true, too, because I'm half Syrian and there is a normalcy of first cousin marriage in my family.
@thinkfact7 жыл бұрын
Incestuous relationships are often quite common in many fundamentalist religious groups, there's also a need for there to be a lack of a cultural taboo. Incestuous relationships are common amongst group like the Amish (Anabaptist Christians) for example. Though, many of them are trying to find ways to counteract that. Another part that often plays a role as potential he arranged marriages, having a desire to marry within one's own culture or religious group, and having a lack of insight over and genetic issues that arise within the context of medical knowledge. There is a lot to it. Thank you for the comment, I appreciate it! Take care.

I write down almost every thought I get in my phone that I could make a topic about. I have thousands of ideas in it. It's making a video out of it that is hard for me sometimes.

Reminded me of the beginning to A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bryson. Still need to actually finish the book but I remember being really moved when he talked about the fact that we're all just a collection of atoms that are arranged in a highly specific way to make you and I. We can take apart every atom that makes us up and the collection of atoms you end up with will not be representative at all of the sum of its parts. I wondered, which atom would you need to remove for us to lose consciousness? I just thought that was so neat, sort of how we're all here due to a sequence of highly specific actions that can be extended for thousands of years back. Come to think of it, if we don't exclude ourselves to the actions of modern humans, we can keep going back to the actions of the specific early human ancestors related to you and I, and then the mammals related to them, and the amphibians crawling out of the primeval pool, and the simple organelles that were joining together to make cells, and then the matter that started conglomerating into giant masses that would eventually become planets, and the bits of matter floating around after the big bang. It all makes me feel a bit insignificant, but I can't help but be in awe of the sheer beauty of it all. Like it all just sort of happened without rhyme or reason on one lazy Sunday afternoon and bam here we are. Great video lol.
@thinkfact7 жыл бұрын
It's kind of overwhelming to think about in all actuality. Both of our existences faced such astronomical odds, yet here we are. And going back to your point, what if the very specific atoms that condition the very first lifeforms for some reason weren't there and for whatever reason life just didn't develop? What if the earth had no moon, what if the earth had not been hit by that Mars-size body that helped create the moon. It's almost like we're all a formula that ultimately required very specific things to happen to get to us. Anyway, thank you very much for the comment. Great read! Have a good one!

How much about your great great grandparents do you personally ever hear? And is information about all of them going to be passed down to your grandchildren? It's complicated. Thank you for the comment, and take care!

I would take in consideration also people that saved your ancestors' lives and their ancestors, and also people that did something to people that would've threatened your ancestor's existence. PS I would've loved you to talk about the person where all humanity can relate to, the "real Eve" of sorts and how anthropologists managed to get to it. Or just make another video.

And if we consider that "you" is not only your body, but also your character (habits, mentality, etc.), then the answer is: All of them. The world you live in was formed by and is a product of all of the people that have come to pass, leaving (or taking) their own pebble on the mound of civilization. Thus, "you" are in some sense, a child of everyone that shaped your world, not just the ones that gave birth to you.

from 9 mins on you blew my mind, never thought that way. Always looked at it as i would be here either way, just question if i would be me. Like my skin tone, and family. But that my reality would have always happened just the settings would have changed
