Minimum Battles is the ultimate challenge. But how many Pokemon can beat the first Gym of Gen 2 on Minimum Battles?
On my main channel ‪@RBYPokemonChallenges‬ , I have already completed this challenge with all 151 Pokemon on Gen 1, but Gen 2 presents a massively different challenge - sleep and Wrap were nerfed, there's no Gen 1 miss (1/256 glitch), and all the trainers have better AI. But Minimum Battles might just be possible with some effort and ingenuity.
Today's challengers:
Seel, Dewgong,
Grimer, Muk,
Shellder, Cloyster,
Gastly, Haunter, Gengar,
Onix,
Pineco, Forretress,
Dunsparce,
Gligar,
Steelix

Another pokétuber (I think it’s Scott’s Thoughts?) tends to say Gligar is sad whenever some more or less unlikely pokémon can learn Mud-Slap, because Gligar doesn’t learn it - nor either of the other two Ground-type TMs, nor any other Ground move. Its only STAB is Wing Attack, which it only gets as an egg move. At least in gen 3, they allowed it to learn Aerial Ace, Dig, and Earthquake from TMs, but it didn’t get a STAB move by level-up until gen 5, where it learns Acrobatics. And that was it until BDSP, where Mud-Slap and Earthquake were finally added to its level-up set. And subsequently removed again in Scarlet and Violet, where its only level-up STAB is once again Acrobatics. In their place it now learns … Poison Tail and Crabhammer? The TM selection is good at least.

@bitterzombie 7 ай бұрын
Yeah the most insulting thing about gligar not getting mudslap is that it everything else learns it, it would actually make sense for gligar to learn, AND its not like gligar has any better options. It was screwed by its movepool, incredible that it was so bad in its original game, but gliscor is now one of the most competitive viable pokemon out there
@GSCPokemonChallenges

Yeah, I suppose you could give it Hidden Power Flying or Hidden Power Ground for STAB in Gen 2, but that's about it. Sometimes early game TM and level up learnsets are just comical

@@GSCPokemonChallenges Bulbapedia says: "Although Gligar could not learn Earthquake by TM in Generation II, a Gligar that knew Earthquake was a reward in Pokémon Stadium 2 for beating the rival in Round 2." which checks out based on the sets Smogon has for it in Gen 2. I'm not sure why Gamefreak made that decision... but they certainly did. Up until Gen 4 a lot of Pokemon just had awful learn sets.

I have been working on creating a run/tier list point system similar to how you structure your minimum battles in Yellow. I call it a "minimalist run". Before I get to the points and structure I want to say this would all be possible on a legit copy of Crystal given you have a copy of Gold/Silver (with ACE setup) and means to trade. Start off by nicknaming your starter for the pokemon you will be doing and losing to the rival and catching a sentret (best HM 1st route mon) so you can trade. Trade your starter and use ACE to change the species and moves to the level 5 moveset. When you trade it back, make sure it is holding a rare candy. The game is played on minimum battles and catching electrodes/red gyrados, but using the simple cloning glitch on a pokemon holding that spare rare candy, you can use it cloned candies when you are stuck in a section until you have what you need to progress. The goal is to not use TMs/HMs or use as little as possible. Also there would be 3 runs for this kind of structure: 0DVs, 15DVs, and a run where DVs are manipulated for Hidden Power and egg moves are allowed. I think those 3 kinds of runs would be interesting to compare to see how much stats/move diversity affects the Pokemon's performance. I have made a system of penalty points to use to create a tier list with the following values: 1 per reset (max 10 resets per fight, 20 for elite 4 before using TMs/rare candies) 10 per TM/HM 50 per universal TM (Attract, Curse, Double Team, Frustration, Hidden Power [in 0DV/15DV runs] Protect, Rest, Return, Sleep Talk, Snore, Toxic) Rare candy points=level after candy (only counted apart from normal rare candies) (eg. Using a candy to reach level 10 is 10 points, ans using a candy to reach level 95 is 95 points) 20 per egg move [hidden power/egg move runs only] I haven't actually started a run like this to test it, and the point system probably would need adjusting. I also think rare candies are better than optional battles for additional levels, because it keeps the stat exp completely consistent in each of the runs. The only difference in stat exp you would have would be depending on which starter you gave the rival, and when comparing one species in the different runs it would always have the same stat exp. Anyway I wondered if this seemed like a good way to structure these kinds of challenges.
@GSCPokemonChallenges
@GSCPokemonChallenges 7 ай бұрын
That sounds like a very interesting setup. I especially like the idea of doing 3 runs, with Max DVs, Min DVs, and DVs for a Hidden Power

Do not stress over Struggle strats too much. It is coded in the game therefore it counts. I do believe that are no more than a couple of dozens who are bothered by it (and thousands do not mind at all). And the same thing should be true with the first rival fight. That battle is sometimes literally impossible to lose unless you hack in money for Pokeballs needed to skip your turns (or you could reset date on your console a couple of thousands times, waiting for berries to regrow) - Gastly line is a prime example of this inconvenience. Not worth the hassle. Even more for Gen I where a lot of Pokemon just cannot lose the first rival fight because you cannot do much with a single Potion and nothing else at that point in the game.
@GSCPokemonChallenges
@GSCPokemonChallenges 4 ай бұрын
Yeah, I think it's justifiable, just not purely minimum battles. I decided to make it a standard test when it's logical. As we progress, ai imagine it will be less and less necessary because any time we have a 50 power neutrally effective move, it's almost always better than Struggle anyhow

@johncalabro8710
@johncalabro8710 7 ай бұрын
Yes I think the Elite depends on your pokemon and movesets. For Fighting Types Yellow would be much harder and for some impossible without tms. Just by having to fight Lorelei Agatha, Lance and the Champ with low special (defense) for example the Hitmons with 35 special. While Psychic Mons are the opposite. In Gen 2 it is almost the reverse. Fighting type mons all get boost in their special defenses for example the hitmons go up the most out of fighting types to 110 special defense. While many Psychic have to deal with Dark Type trainer Karren, this alone would make gen 2 much harder for them. @@GSCPokemonChallenges
