On this episode of Dirtcom we decide to see how many manual pumps it would take using a normal bicycle pump to fill up an average sized offroad tire. How many do you think it will take?
We go from 0-15 psi and also 15-25 psi. Check out our graph near the end!

Wow, I'm impressed with your data recording and curve fitting process! It looks like the tire pressure is a linear function of the number of strokes of the pump handle. Which makes sense if you remember the ideal gas law from high school chemistry. PV=MRT. Assuming a more-or-less constant air temperature and a constant tire volume, the pressure in the tire is directly proportional to the mass of air pumped into it. And the mass of air increases by the same amount for every stroke of the handle. The effort force required to pump the handle also increases linearly with the pressure in the tire, and the total energy expended increases with tire pressure squared! Pumping air into a tire is similar to compressing a spring from an energy perspective.

There are dual-volume pumps that will get it done faster. Go to a bike store to get a decent pump.

You’re lucky you didn’t have a diesel with ten ply needing 80psi lol, I really thank you for making this video, I’ve had a cigarette charger pump behind my seat for years and when I needed it last week, of course it didn’t work , I was thinking of buying a bike pump for emergency use, I think I’ll pass now and just walk home if it ever happens again.

I'll definitely get one for emergencies, but the electric pump seems like a solid first choice. LoL

Appreciate this informative video. I was initially surprised at high cost of $43 vs $10 walmart pump but in all fairness walmart pump wouldn't last more than 50 pumps without overheating and blowing its hose. Looks like a good workout but spare 12v pump seems like a better option for about the same cost.

Thanks! Yeah. Definitely not practical. Could probably get a good manual pump for $30 as well. Yes, electricity is your friend! Hahaha.

For lower pressure applications, a high-volume air pump such as the Bell Air Attack 650 for $20 will inflate much faster than any electric inflator, battery or corded. And those electric inflators have a duty cycle as well to prevent overheating, except for the really heavy-duty ones made by the likes of Dewalt and Milwaukee, which are well into the $100+ range. The problem with electric inflators is that they are extremely energy inefficient. They move a small piston back and forth at very high peak speeds, which forces the air through the hose in short, high-velocity pulses. The high air flow velocity induces a lot of pumping energy loss, which is converted to heat in the pump and hose components. Also the faster piston speeds means more friction losses within the pump, wasting energy and reducing its lifespan. And the corded pumps draw a lot of energy from the alternator/battery. A high volume manual pump is far more energy efficient since the piston is larger in diameter and traveling a lot slower, so you're moving a larger volume of air per stroke with a more consistent air flow velocity, which keeps pumping losses to a minimum. A high volume foot pump typically has a smaller displacement volume than a high volume floor pump, but you can exert far more force and power using your leg than you can with your arms and trunk. At a certain tire pressure, the foot pump starts to be more effective than the hand pump because it can force higher pressure air at a faster rate without fatiguing your muscles.

Get yourself a big hand-pump, not a flimsy bike pump. Big pumps, to be found in all kind of 4x4 rentals all over Africa, quite easy to pump up a car tire.

Yes true. The whole point of the video was to use a flimsy bike pump!

Never heard of a hand pump. I might check those out to see if they can be used to fill a bicycle tire.

@@DirtComplexI don't plan on using a bike pump to pump a tire up from 0psi, but I wouldn't mind using for when there's a blip in the weather due to transitioning from fall into winter. My dashboard light goes crazy when there's extreme fluctuation from fall to winter and winter into spring with the tire pressures. I appreciate you taking the time to share just how realistically long it would take to pump a tire from 0 to 33psi. I just need about 10 -15 psi and then another day, I might need to remove the air if we get a warm day, because the 32psi could jump to 37psi, when the max for the tire recommendations are 32psi for my specific car tires.

@@DirtComplex I have an air compressor, but I need to go to a bike shop and see if they have the part that clamps onto a tire, because the stem that pushes onto the tire stem, to push air in, is broken. I can lop the old one off and maybe see if I can find an electrical tape or those electrical plastic rubes you can light to shrink around a wire, if they make them big enough to fit over a compressor hose. 🤷‍♀️
