Great advice! I've been doing this for over 20 years. Skipped the qt regime from time to time. Got lucky a few but the times I wasn't the impact was catastrophic! Patience, patience, and more patience. Nutrition, & reserve water on hand is key as well. A calm setting and hiding spots too. Become a "fish whisperer"...haha. They've had a long hard journey.

Hi! Thank you for a great video about quarantining fish. I am a beginner in the saltwater fish hobby and there is a lot I don't know so these videos are valuable to me. But I am also a chemist and therefore feel like I have to correct you on the wrong information about ammonium/ammonia in the video. Ammonium ions have a pKa value of 9.3. What that means is that this is the pH threshold where un-ionized ammonia is going to exceed the amount of ammonium ions in water and not pH 8.0 as claimed in the video. Also ammonia is a base which increases the pH of water, not decreasing it as stated in the video. There are other processes that can decrease the pH of water such as oxidation of ammonia to nitrite and nitrate. Both of which convert the basic ammonia to acidic nitrous acid and nitric acid, respectively.

I really appreciate you advocating so strongly to reefers to learn to and perform quarantine procedures! I usually treat with Copper Power (for Ich) and the Trifecta (Kanaplex + Furan2 + Metro) to cover most issues prophylactically. One thing I'd like to add that you didn't mention: IIRC the ammonia blockers don't permanently make the ammonia safe, you need to reapply every ~48 hours (according to a Seachem support representative via email support). Just follow the directions or contact support for clarification.

Thanks for the great summary! I’ll second your point on diagnosing fish. Even with a degrees in molecular biology, biochemistry, and medicine, I am humbled by the process and wise enough to know I am not a veterinarian. That said, there are times that one give medication without a diagnosis. Example, with military personnel and hikers in Asia, we often gave individuals medication to take when in remote areas. Drug “A” is for symptoms 1,2,3, … You home can often be considered a similar situation. Veterinarians trained or willing to treat aquarium inhabitants are rare and far between. Diseases can kill in hours or days. The internet helps, but one must be prepared to step in. Read on common diseases, stock up on required items, and have the quarantine tank ready to go. My son’s first fish, Justinian the betta, is in a quarantine tank on Day 5 of medication for “pop eye.” I am so happy that it appears I will not have to tell my son over Thanksgiving that his fish died while he was in college. Thanks for another great episode in this series, Jim

I think we need a video dedicated to observation poses. I was taking notes but I need more detail on technique. Perhaps recommended stretches to do before attempting the more complicated poses? Thanks.

Hey Matt, if you're not medicating during QT, what about using Purogen or PolyFilter to remove ammonia when water changes are a rather expensive endeavor?

What are quarantining procedures for tropical climate regions to maintain the tank temp. Obviously we wont need a heater ? Do we need to have a chiller to maintain the temperatures? Thanks
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 3 жыл бұрын
If you live in a hot climate and your tank gets above 81-82 degrees F, then you're going to need some way of keeping the tank cool. Fans may work if you just need to drop the temp a degree or two, but if you need to see a more significant temperature drop, then a chiller is a necessity.

@@BulkReefSupply Thanks for the reply and support. Chiller seems to be my only option. Fans will do the job but only during winter and monsoons. Peak summer temp are 100-102degF.

Coming from freshwater side of the hobby (for now anyway), can you use a seeded sponge filter from freshwater when setting up a quarantine tank? I don't know if those bacteria colonies are the same as saltwater? Otherwise I assume you could just use a plastic tub, heater, and small filter? This would mean your QT could be inexpensive and not taking up space when not in use.

If you have a recently setup tank and are ready to add fish, do you have to quarantine the first fish that you put into that tank?
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 3 жыл бұрын
It's a great idea to QT if you're going to be adding more fish. If you don't QT the first fish, then any other fish you add later could be exposed to disease.

This method is for fish use only? Not corals?
@BulkReefSupply
@BulkReefSupply 2 жыл бұрын
This video is focused on fish quarantine, but corals can also be quarantined. This is best done separately as most fish medications are not reef safe.

I have 2 questions, 1) how much is "a little bit of bleach?" I'm using the same rimless tank from BRS that you recommended, and 2) If my fish didn't show any sing of disease and I move them to my DT, can I put new fish on my QT tank without sterilizing? Awesome videos BTW, this info is extremely helpful!
