If I may add something u wanna add that won’t take things over, marigold & basil. Marigold releases a scent in the soil that drives pest away. I never liked the look of marigolds but they have a ton of varieties. I got a BEAUTIFUL sugar & spice variety & another called Kilimanjaro white.. their heirloom varieties (which means no GmOs) I get em from baker creek!!

HELLO Billy, do you have flowers? If so, it could be that you don't have any pollinators. I would plant flowers by to bring in the bees. You can hand pollinate the flowers to make sure you have pollination. If you don't have flowers, there could be a nutrient imbalance. Too much nitrogen will encourage green growth and barely any flowering. Watermelons love full sun, make sure it has that. Thanks for watching and commenting.

In northern Illinois...planted water melons this year. My first attempt. Have 10 or melons on the vines. Should you prune to reduce number per vine or per plant? I planted 2 plants this spring and many vines running out from each plant. Largest two melons are 10-15 pounds..the rest are 5-6 pounds. Should I get rid of smaller ones? And how large or small can they be and still ripen and be edible?

I, too, am trying my hand at growing melons. My husband just found this video for me, and we watched it. I am new at this and have multiple plants in one pot, about 4-7 inches tall. My challenge will be getting them all out without damaging the roots and plants, then transferring them to the ground. Any suggestions?
@GrowSomethingTasty
@GrowSomethingTasty 3 ай бұрын
@patrese1hopkins451 I think some of the roots will get damaged. The roots are mostly likely entangled. You can try taking the entire soil out of the container and get the water hose, and wash the soil away gently until the soil is gone and remove them that way. The other option is just to grab the soil and break them up that way.

@GrowSomethingTasty
@GrowSomethingTasty Жыл бұрын
HELLO Alva, Yes, you can still eat them. You can companion plant. I don't know what bugs are eating your plants. Many gardeners use marigolds to get insects to go after those plants and not their plants. Planting basil helps to fight against some pests. I have it in my garden now. Some gardeners grow mint in pots to provide a smell that gets on some bugs nervous, but be careful if mint gets in the garden bed it will take over your garden. You can also use neem oil and spray your plants. For weeds, you can just pull them. I have weeds, too. I take them and make fertilizer with them. I released that video last week. Hey, I also have videos on bug control as well. It's great you are a first-time gardener. Keep gardening.

HELLO Icemage21k, if you only want 2 melons, keep all the vines just have 1 melon on one vine and 1 melon on another vine. Now, if you have suckers coming off the main vine, cut the sucker. I would leave the other vines if you see flowers come up on the vines you don't want melons on, then pinch the flowers off. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I did ice box melons, orange crush, and purple whatever they’re called. It’s my first year trying to grow melons. I did ice box, orange crush and purple whatever they are called. So far the orange crush seem to be going strong. Not sure how big any of these types get except I know the icebox are small. The purple ones are growing but they are slow for whatever reason. And my icebox vines are about 3 feet and have two per vine but the leaves are a dull yellow ish color and they have these black dots on them that look like burn marks. They have been that way for a long time now and the melons are about the sizes of a baseball and a softball. They have been the same size for a longs time now. Any ideas as to what’s going on with them? I love gardening but have zero experience with these things so any advice would be greatly appreciated

I normally have one melon per vine and most time I will have 2 melons per plant. Some people do more but I like mine to have some size to it. I also use compost tea to feed the plants. To keep them green I use fish fertilizer once every two weeks when fruit is on the plant. When there is no fruit in the beginning I feed the plant with fish fertilizer every week.

It it's white, I leave it alone. I wait for those 2 things. Every once in a while, the tendrils may dry early, so it's good to know how long it takes the melons to be ready. If you don't know where the tendrils are, look at one of those videos.

I like to leave 1 melon per vine. The melons will be a decent size. If I want to get them bigger, I will leave 2 melons per plant but they will be on different vines. If I have several melons on 1 vine the fruits will be small. Unless you fertilize a lot, they still could grow small because that's a lot of energy going into each melon. If I was growing for a competition then I would only have one melon on a single plant, pruning all the other melons from the plant. That is basically what the video is about. I hope you have google translator. Thanks for your question.
