@@block4565 pretty mixed bag. I had a real big black diamond coming in that I was excited for. I picked it probably a week too soon. I tried to do all the different ways to check for ripeness but I still fumbled the bag. My royal goldens produced a good bit of melons but none of them got very big. Think this year I’m going to up what I feed them and how often.

HELLO envisionstar, I made an irrigation system this year for my melon patch. I did have other melons plants in my food forest. So you just grow one watermelon per plant? or do you have 3-4 vines (main vine and suckers) growing and once you get one watermelon on each then you cut top of each of them?
@GrowSomethingTasty5 ай бұрын
HEY @hemalsgolwala!!! I have one watermelon per vine. I like to have 2 melons on a plant so I can get size to them. If you don't want large melons on the vine then you can grow more on the plant. I have a video called How Many Watermelons to Grow on a Plant.

@GrowSomethingTasty7 ай бұрын
Hey Brian!!! No, I keep at least 2 but it depends. Sometimes I leave one melon per vine, so if a plant has 4 vines, I have 4 melons. I did a video called How many watermelons to grow per plant? I list a couple of options but it depends on the grower.

Im growing watermelons in conteiners in 4 and 5 gallons. I have one of each on my little field if they go wrong. My moonbean and sugar babies have been growing fast and are forming a few watermelon but now they have stopped my biggest watermelon is the size of a mango and the end of the tendrill is browning out. I have put a lot of granular fertilizer. My liquid fertilizer who is seaweed and kelp havent been doing much to my garden. I used it when i want a fast acting fertilizer but i see no improvement on most of my plants. I have a worm bin i started a month ago maybe its a microbe issue and the fertilizer just doesnt breakdown in my pots as fast as it should
@GrowSomethingTasty Жыл бұрын
HELLO @Barchat, I had a worm been years ago. It took a while to build up a lot of worm castings, at least when I did it. I used the liquid at the bottom of the bend. I hope you have success with the melons. I need to look up moonbean. I had never heard of them before. A master gardener told me that granular fertilizer takes a while before it breaks down, but I always put it in and around my planting hole. He said that when he fertilize in the spring and summer, that fertilizer is for the fall and winter. I try to do that as well. I still think you will get some effects of the fertilizer. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@GrowSomethingTasty i do put fertilizer on my planting hole. Theres something always wrong and its nitrogen from my conteiners and one of my beds. My strawberry bed grow almost in full now compost and they always look sick and have sign of deficiencies, i eradicated spider mites with a natural insecticide. The soil tests always come out with almost no nitrogen. I poured blood meal on them this time same for my conteiners plans and watermelons. My other bed is doing fine. Massive pepper plans, carrots, swizz chard and onions. My container plants alway end up yellowing and its hard to fix them. I have bindweed on my beds that i constantly have to pull everyday but i doubt its the thing that dries nitrogen. The two watermlons on my field are doing fine so far. The main vine Is still growing

Hello new to your channel. I have a question for you. I have what they call Sweet melons that don't grow like Vines they have like a rhubarb plant to them. And can I prune them the same way I would prune a Vine or say tomato plant? Thank you. We hit the like button and subscribed
@GrowSomethingTasty5 ай бұрын
HEY Timothy!!! I appreciate the support by hitting the like button and subscribing. Sweet melons, are you talking about cantaloupes? If so I don't cut the vines because I like having a lot of cantaloupes. It will work but I would just cut the fruit off instead of clipping the vines. The watermelons seem like they go for miles. I grew a 6-pound cantaloupe last year.

HELLO Rowanstec, I would just keep an eye on it, and if it looks like it's starting to rot, cut it off. If it looks a little funny, but it seems fine, keep letting it grow. I've had a fee to look like that, and they were good, but just remember it it starts to turn bad and cut it. I don't why that happens.

This is my first year growing melons, didnt know i'm suposed to prune them but relieved to learn this bcz they've taken over! I cant even see where all the melons are it's so dense. I planted pumpkins among them as well! 🤦🏻♀️ maybe this is fixable now that I know its ok to cut vines. vines look healthy in spite of the competition for nutrients. Zone 9 (or 10 not sure)CA, long growing season so i hope theres time to still grow to full size.
@GrowSomethingTasty Жыл бұрын
HELLO BLUEBIRD, you don't have to prune them. I just do it to keep it cleaner, but the main reason is that the melons get larger when I do this. Big-time farmers don't do it because they have too many plants, and they fertilize heavily so they can get away with it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

If a watermelon falls off already pruned vine, would you cut off the entire vine off at that point?
@GrowSomethingTasty5 ай бұрын

@@GrowSomethingTasty my luck I guess just watched ur video and went to prune my plant. Chopped off all the suckers and past the melon..... looked at the vine and it just popped off. I pollinated it like 3 days ago maybe too early to prune. Still have another one and one just appeared. Last year I was late and cut off the entire vine by accident where only melon was lol. I'm in NJ so not a lot of time to ripen these.

I have a question.. I must've missed your follow-up video on trellising BIG watermelons. My space is small and need to somehow trellis on a smaller scale(#gatedcommunitygarden) How did yours turn out with supporting BIG melons?
@GrowSomethingTasty Жыл бұрын
HELLO Sasha, it was good until the bad wind storm knocked them off. I was able to get one. For that size melon, those bags were not good for that wind. I think my title was when things went wrong in the garden. I need to watch it because the animals are winning. How big are your melons. The bags work for honeydew size melons. I will definitely look for the material next year and try it again for sure.
@sashacohen883 Жыл бұрын
This is my first time growing watermelons. I am only a second-year gardener. I am expecting the package says giant-sized watermelon. I was thinking that I might need to use pallet wood to try and make a trellis that with support heavy watermelons but I haven't figured out the rest yet. So far it's just a large and traveling vine, but I anticipate it trying to plow right through my greens if I don't get it under control and have a plan early on
