Hi Bear, one good thing I get leaves and grass. I'll even go out and ask my neighbors for theirs. Do you have any knowledge of wood ash. My mom gave me bags of it. Have an awesome night
@GrowSomethingTastyКүн бұрын
HEY Cheryl!!! That is great. When I see the leaves on the curb, I just grab them. I know wood ash supplies calcium, potassium, and magnesium. I hear it's a pest deterrent for snails or slugs. It raises the PH of acidic soil. I don't use it because I don't have any. You have an awesome night as well.

One thing I learned a couple years ago, the hard way, is that watermelons ripen by heat. The strange way I learned this was when we had a melon pop up in early August that made melons [despite being devoured by the ground hogs] which I protected with a black milk crate, and a truck tire. They go so ripe, they turned to liquid before I harvested them. Turns out, they were getting up to 125 degrees under the black tire and the black milk crate. They were edible...or...more exactly...drinkable.
@GrowSomethingTastyКүн бұрын
Wow 125 degrees, I see why they are liquid. Yes, we as gardeners learn something every year.
@hunnybunnysheavymetalmusic6542Күн бұрын
@@GrowSomethingTasty One of the lessons i learned, going forward is that I can 100% ensure no unripe watermelons, since all I ave to do is make sure they get up over 100F and 100% guaranteed, 100% ripe, even if they are those 'hardly developed latecomers' a lot of amateur melon growers experience [from not thinning their vines of excess fruit]. Between keeping the vines way up off the ground and being on a hot tin roof, I should have some pretty good ripening.
@hunnybunnysheavymetalmusic65422 күн бұрын
My next watermelon crop is gunna be up on the roof of my barn, so the ground hogs and deer can't eat them. That way I can harvest them at the end of the year.
@GrowSomethingTastyКүн бұрын
Cool, that sounds like a great plant. Let me know how it goes. That is very interesting.
@hunnybunnysheavymetalmusic6542Күн бұрын
@@GrowSomethingTasty I will be documenting it from start [setting up the trellis and the planter row <planter row is some half culverts left by former land owner, suspended from the eves of the roof>] through putting the melons on slings, to harvesting.
@hunnybunnysheavymetalmusic65422 күн бұрын
MY only problem is the ground hogs and the deer eating them before I can pick any of them.
@GrowSomethingTastyКүн бұрын
HEY Hunnybunny!!! I am sorry to hear. I don't have that problem but the voles are mine. I am trying everything to stop them.

@@GrowSomethingTasty I hope some day to get some field crops put out, but part of this plan is putting out some "dazzler/warblers" [devices that both emit sounds and flashing lights] that will be set on motion sensors all around the (fenced) crop area.

Hey brother🤙🏾 can I leave more than one melon on before I cut? Like two or three? Blessings from New Zealand bro🔥🙏🏽🔥
@GrowSomethingTasty6 күн бұрын
Hey Pete!!! I don't leave three melons on a vine, but you could try having one melon per vine. If you want you could continue to cut the new melons off the plant. Last season I cut all the melons off the plant except 1 and that melon grew to 46 pounds. If you grow lots of melons I would experiment. We do need leaves for photosynthesis so I would not cut all of them off. Let me know how it goes, Bro.
