ok let me start of by saying im glad you didnt take to heart what i said. but by the looks of you when mentioning a comment i made you started tearing up. i want to apoligise if you thought i was abit harsh. i admit i was. and i can see by this video and tbh all your videos how much your amazing fish ment to you. the comment i left wasnt directed personly to you but to all fishkeepers asmuch as it may of looked/sounded like it was. it wasnt. i know it was a terrible mistake that had been made and its not asif its made all the time i can tell by your channel you are a great fish keeper and do whatever you can to give ALL the fish you buy the best life possible. just seeing on your face how much this has effected you shows how much you do care for your fish/animals. asmuch as this goes against what i said im looking forward to seeing what you add to your tank. and the reason i say this is because i know it wasnt intentional and i know how much you care and how much this has actualy effected you. so im holding my hand up and apologising for the comments i made as i now know i was super harsh on you. sorry charmer.

I'm watching this video 4 months later and I am so sorry for your losses. You were honest and transparent enough to share your struggles with us. I am a fairly experienced fish keeper and you have definitely helped me with keeping African cichlids. I just want you to know that I think that you are an amazing person. I am happy that you didn't quit our amazing hobby. P.s. my wife thinks that I love my fishes too much as well 😊. Hang in there man and keep up the good work 💪🏾

Things happen in this hobby and fish die. It's a sad fact. People make mistakes, equipment fails, unforseen aggression, disease, etc... As long as we as fish keepers learn from these incidents and move forward as better aquarists having learned from tragedy it's all good. No fault exists here. You made a mistake that you will never repeat and you will be better for it. Nothing to be ashamed of at all. I have been in this hobby since the 70's (yes i'm old) and have had my share of issues here and there. We move forward stronger and more dedicated to the health and well being of our fish. I look forward to sharing the next steps in your fish keeping journey.

Man I appreciate that. All true. So you’ve been in the hobby a little longer than I have been. I started in the early 80s. Had no idea what I was doing and never even cycled a tank. Don’t know how fish lasted as long as they did back then. Poor guys.

My first aquarium ever was a 125g , several years ago and in it were my first fish that I ever had, those were cichlids. They were all priceless to me and I lost some along the way on my fish keeping journey. It’s definitely sad, because most of us do care about them. I had to sell my tank a couple years ago but now I’m getting back in to the hobby. Anyway, back then what I always did was, and this isn’t for everybody but I had several buckets that I would fill with replacement water. I always put Seachem Prime in those buckets and let them sit overnight or close to 24hrs and I also purchased cheap heaters and I put those in the buckets of water, to heat it close to the temperature in the tank. That method served me well and I’ve started doing that again. Like I said, thats not for everybody. Also, IF anybody ever says they’ve never lost any fish, they’re lying.

Thank you for the update. So happy to see your not giving up! So many fish keepers do because it is so devastating and then comes the blaming or shaming of yourself. I think we are much more harder on ourselves in cases like this. We are all human and we all make mistakes. No true fish keeper ever wants to harm any fish on purpose! Wow so you are just starting out - how fun! The chlorine usually wouldn’t have been as potent, but they had just dosed the city water so it was stronger than usual. So sorry this happened with your tank, and I think Mobi was my favorite. I’m just now getting back into the Cichlid hobby after a 25 year hiatus, and KZbin and your channel have been a lot of help. My 75 is now up and running and I’ve treated with a bacteria starter, and are going to test weekly for a few weeks before adding fish. The reason I stopped 25 years ago was that we were on vacation and I was using an automatic feeder that worked great, however we lost power due to a spring storm for hours and the two hang on the back filters lost prime and when the power came back on they did not self prime and the tank went without filtration for a long while and all my fish were dead when we got home. Using a canister filter this go around and will add more filtration later if my water quality is not where it needs to be. Looking forward to seeing the new fish for your tank.

Thank you for sharing it helps us grow. I too recently had a unfortunate die off in my 75 gallon peacock cichlids tank. I resetly had to do maintenance on one of my filters and I unknown to myself, some how pull the dugital heaters temp sensor out of the tank and it was hanging behind the tank. I woke up to half my peacocks dead. I quickly realized the water was actually over 90 some degrees. I unplugged the heater, removed the lids, and started adding some cold declorinated water every so often and also filled several water bottles with cold water. I had no idea if I was doing wrong or if I was bringing it down too fast, but somehow, the remaing half survived. I was devastated like you. I had all these peacocks since they were juveniles. I feel your pain. We all make mistakes

Cichlid Charmer, Seeing you tear up made me smile and feel proud that you look at your fish as a pet and do care about them. Like I wrote in the previous video this happened to me and it was devastating and almost made me quit the hobby. I learned from it and did a whole bunch of research and then decided to redo the tank which sat empty and drained for a few months on what I wanted to do next. I feel so much better and in return I got some great CA cichlids living and thriving in my 98 gal. The only fish that survived my mistake was my green severum. Tough little guy back than lol. He is obviously bigger now. We adapt, we learn, we grow and it makes us better fish keepers. I am going to reiterate like other fish keepers have said. When we are doing maintenance and doing water changes we can’t be distracted because those are living creatures that can’t talk and we need to make sure we treat them right. Appreciate the honesty and the love of the hobby. ❤

Mannn I can relate. Exact same think happened to me several years ago. Doing a water change on my 180 African tank, watching football and forgot to add dechlor. I have a hunch the city added more chlorine than usual because it happened really fast. I lost ~20 full grown peacocks and haps. It was an amazing tank and my pride and joy, I was devastated and felt horrible. I was about to move and never set that tank up again and finally sold it. Fast forward 7 years I now live in S. America and I saw the variety of amazing fish local caught here in Colombia. I just had to get back in. I bought a 75 and stocked with all S. Americans and never looked back. Lesson learned in an very unfortunate way but sooo glad I'm back in the hobby. Love your channel !

If you feel down, I can definitely see how fish keeping could give you a much needed spark. I wish you the best and many fun fish and other kinds of adventures.

Amazing Video and you hit the nail on the headnwhen you spoke about feeling alone when something terrible happens in a tank. I'm so happy for the FishFam and their support and education to make us all better and not disheartened and wanting to give up. Is there a Dechlorinator that your friend recommended other others? I've always used API stress coat and have had no issues in 10 years I seen they also have Essentials which MD FishTanks uses. Glad you're moving forward, not too discouraged, and I know it will hurt for a while but ultimately you handled it like a real Pro thank you for being our Chiclid guru 🧘‍♂️🐠

Thank you for that! So he didn’t recommend any particular brand of dechlorinator, but I’m sure it’s all good. I know people use API,Seachem and doesn’t Fritz have one? I’m sure if it’s a good brand you’re fine. Oh and I am no guru. I know some, but you want a fish guru, look at Prime Time Aquatics. That guy knows more than anyone.

Thank you so much! Again thank you. Any honest human being has made dumb mistakes. Sometimes I feel like I'm foremost among them - having kept wet pets/ finny friends for over 40 years. I am a robust 75-year-old man, with almost extreme arthritis - and Feel a little terrible that I'm not able to do everything in my fish that would be love, and care. My heart goes out to you in every way. Please know that you're not alone. Okay here's my confession; though I've lost my dear pets through being a dumb ass, and now arthritis, nothing will keep me from providing the best home I can. One of my blessings is the pronunciation in Greek and Latin of their real names; Chalceus Macrolepidotus - etc. I know I haven't ended the war on intelligence, but I have given some people permission to love the musicality of the nomenclature and the euphonious sheer beauty of the Greek language! I will be in touch.

Thank you for sharing this experience sir. Was it very mistake ? Absolutely.......but it was just that, a MISTAKE. I suffered through a very bad case of Columnaris about 3 years ago that resulted in the loss of 19 fish, some of which I had kept from fry to adults that were 5-6 years of age. It was rough, and I wanted to throw my hands up. But by watching videos much like this one you have here, it helped me push through and come back even stronger.

7 months ago I lost 32 mixed austrialn rainblow fish that I had been growing out for 2.5 years, and 4 synodontis petricola that were easily over 10 years old due to a similiar situation. I was devistated to come home after a weekend to see all fish floating up in my tank, not to mention the smell of dead fish. It still hurts. But I managed to stay strong, and got an even bigger tank and restocked with fish - albeit cheaper fish until I get my confidence back again. Stay strong my fish brother!

It's happened to me bc my power went out for a full 24 hours and I put the generator when I got home but it was too late the time I got back. 30 of my african cichlids died and I was just devastated that all these fish died bc the water was just dead for too long in an overstocked tank. So that got me thinking to get a natural gas generator that will instantly turn all the power back after it goes out. These were also cichlids that I bred and have had them for almost a year and were almost 4" long, made me feel terrible that I raised them since they were eggs/fry. And that was 2 weeks ago and was my only tragedy out of all my tanks and I've been keeping cichlids for 3 years now

yea the hardest part about your fish dying is knowing its most likley your fault and you are 100% responsible for whatever happens in your tanks, so when they die during a water change it just hits you hard, your brain literally just repeats over and over "you killed them" 😭😭😭😪😪

How do you feed your fish when you are away for a week or two on vacation?
@CichlidCharmer
@CichlidCharmer Жыл бұрын
What a great question! I will be going away for a week and my daughter will be watching them. She knows nothing about taking care of cichlids. So I will have each feeding for each tank in a separate zip lock bag, marked with the day it should be fed. I will also tell her that if she misses a day not to try to make up by feeding two bags on the next feeding. I will also call her or text to remind her to feed them. You could do that, or you could get an auto feeder, but I’ve never used one of those. I hope you have a great vacation 🤘
