The thing about Mat's content is that he keeps it simple, straight forward and efficient. He even keeps his audience updated about when the next video is coming out or when he's taking a break to relax and have fun. He doesn't waste time standing around doing nothing or spouting nonsense. He just gets to the chase, explains everything and starts working. Making sure that significant progress is being made and that most of the video isn't full of unnecessary filler. And he's one of the very few automotive KZbinrs who completes his projects as quickly as possible. Rather than making a +40 part series.

I clicked on this video for no other reason than it was about Mat Armstrong. I like watching his videos and will always watch them on my TV rather than my phone (like I'm watching your video now). Mat is a genuine guy. There are no airs, graces, 😊or bullshit with him. I have learnt a bit about cars from watching him, enough to never wanting to buy a supercar without winning lotto to have the funds behind me in case things go wrong. Incidentally, the fact that you plastered a picture of Mat on the video promo should make this, for you, your most popular video. That's the power of Mat.

I stumbled across his videos earlier this year, watched him rebuild a Ferrari I think, and thought “yes great vid, but just another rich kid playing with super cars”. I researched him a bit and watched his Ben Fowler Road to Success interview. Totally changed my opinion of him, and respect the hard work, risk and vision to get to this point. The fact he was building a rental property portfolio while working a normal job shows he was trying his best to succeed. The Hard Work Beats Talent tees sum it up. BTW I’m a 58 year old retired engineering business owner, not a 20 something you’d assume his target viewer would be. Thanks for the great explanation of how KZbin works, and how he’s cracked it. I found Mat about 2 years ago when he was starting out and I've been hooked since. The thing about him is that he's got a great personality and while he does work on cars, he throws himself into the video and doesn't just make the video about the car but also makes it personal by how he reacts to how things are going, whether good or bad and it makes the content more interesting to watch. His videos are the only ones I watch as soon as I get a notification that he posted something new and it's always something that keeps me glued to the screen from beginning to end. His dad, Hanna and the rest of his crew just work perfectly with him, with special appearances from Kevin make the videos just awesome. All my buddies who are into cars and some that aren't, that I've shared Mat's channel with, have all become fans and they all share the same sentiments. I wish him nothing but success but i don't think he needs it since he seems to be doing just fine.

People like to hang with happy, positive, passionate people who get things done. Matt is all of that. He is always like a kid opening his first present on Christmas morning. Subconsciously people think that attitude is going to rub off of them eventually. I just found Matt last week and was captivated by his personality. That he could become successful enough to give his father a Ferrari 360 just sealed the deal. How proud both he and his father must be every day.

Okay - a response is required, as you have missed the critical issue which keeps people watching, and no amount of over-analysis will overcome this. My concern, as someone who does not produce content, is that viewers don't get the impression that if they follow Matt's "system" that they will get success. And I say this advisedly as a TV producer myself. NONE of this would count for anything if Matt wasn't a natural and gifted performer and presenter. Its really THAT simple. He is enormously watchable; animated, personable, human, engaging. Without that core quality, the rest of the "system" from programme structure, hooks, thumbnails, links and the rest would count for nothing. There are plenty of other KZbinrs who have the same formula and it doesn't work BECAUSE THE CAMERA DOESN'T LOVE THEM.

So what you’re really saying is you need emotive connectivity with your views which you only get from being authentic. However the rest can be taught and learned… it’s really no different to any kind of presenting you don’t need to be a TV producer to know this stuff.

FINALLY someone else has spotted how Mat is doing his ad reads. I cut my teeth working as an editor in London for a variety of TV productions and have to say, his is the most well-thought out, intelligent approach I've seen on KZbin in this respect. It's not at all easy though; it requires planning ahead and additional time in the edit, not just once, but every single time you do a placement. Add in the pressure to churn out weekly content for the algorithm and it's understandable why most car channels (most channels in general, actually) bang in a pre-recorded reel. The results speak for themselves, though. I'm a big fan of AutoAlex and the TDC boys, but the minute you see that cut away you know what's coming, the fast forward button gets pressed and their engagement metrics drop off. There's only one loser, two if you include the advertiser. If I were running a channel and doing ad reads, above all else, I would prioritise this approach. It's night and day. Easy for me to say though, I don't run a channel 😆, but take it from an old-school editor, this strategy right here is the difference between good and great. Side note: aside from the additional work involved, another reason I *personally* don't think this approach is more prevalent (yet) is because KZbin is an American platform. The US is far more accustomed to 30 second ad spots dropped into TV shows which has informed how many US-based creators approach their ad reads. I think international creators have simply taken their cues from everyone that's gone before them in this respect. Becoming great requires thinking out of the box.

@@MadeByBishop i don't know if you are familiar with the Map Men channel on KZbin (I imagine most reading this are not) but they take a different approach to ads which keeps you watching. @@madpixie2 No self respecting KZbin viewer doesn't know Map Men 😄 Yeah, their stuff is so well done, the ad reads are literally part of the script - but those guys only put out videos once every couple of months (if that!) and probably spend a huge amount of time on the script. matts structure for the videos are really well done, while the overall format is the same, he manages to make each rebuild different, and have a different story. but the most important thing is that he is so very relatable, and the people hes working with (especially his dad) really connects with the audience, just skim through the comments and you can see its what people are drawn two... I still think it is incredible that he edits all the footage himself, that alone is a mammoth amount of work, but hes also doing all the actual work too, I do hope he transitions to a more sustainable rate of videos because so many youtubers burn out and it'd be a real shame. great video Callum, now back to the lawn mower racing :D

His success almost has a sort of feedback loop, because the success itself is inspiring and makes you want to further watch his videos. His formula is similar to reality TV, except it's not a completely synthetic production, which makes it that much more compelling.

I enjoyed this Callum. Fancy doing a few more of these? eg "this is X channel, their forumula is Y, they do these things well..." Possibly an area you could add to future videos is "things you'd like to see them do more" or "possible areas for them to improve" - I've seen ecommerce experts breaking down say gymshark's website and doing case studies on it, and as well as talking about what they're nailing, mentioning possible areas for improvement. On the one hand it's easy to go "omg, giving away my sekrit sauce... what if they take my advice and do it", on the other hand, it builds authority and having pointed out all this value that they're already doing, your suggestions come across as more credible. And y'know - if they did actually go through with it, and haha use your suggestions, you can do a followup video "how mat armstrong took my advice and gained 400 billion subs in 60 minutes" etc.

This video show me so much that I did wrong, so I will try again to be better using these strategies and report back to you in a couple of weeks. You earned my sub. Well done

It’s his dad that’s the real reason to watch, funniest bloke ever

1. Doesn't click bait. 2. When he says something at the beginning or a question, it's answered in the video. 3. Doesn't spent half the time with his face on camera just talking, and explaining, when he's explaining the video rolls showing what he's explaining

Wow, This has been some real amazing content my friend. As someone who has had a car channel for the last 6 years MAT is someone that i look up too, and watch all the builds, a future of what could be if i keep my nose to the grindstone. I apparently i am a good teacher and have way more views on my DIY fixes, however i never meant for the channel to be a DIY channel. lately i have been restructuring to be more entertainment based and my views have skyrocketed. i do most of my own editing as well as it is extremely difficult to find a good editor who can also see your vision, i have tried. So i have basically set out a goal as long im helping change someone's life for the better then i have done my job. Sorry for the longwinded reply, but you have earned a instant SUBSCRIBER.. 🙏

Don’t forget his collaborations. When he did the Porsche rebuild with Tavarish his US audience pumped up his channel by almost a million subscribers.

but unfortunately tavarish was stop in time and matt beat him by far so far

I love that you've used Matt Armstrongs strategy in your video. Some great points. I'll try to use as and when I remember them (Screenshot a couple too) Thank you, a new Sub too 👍 Jamie

Absolutely love Mat, The first series I watched of his was the Mclaren 720s and I was hooked immediately. Best youtuber on the platform.

Probably looked into it a bit too much he's just a normal down to earth guy that has worked really really hard that's a lot of why people watch him.. I met him ages ago when he had only done a few cars proper decent lad so we can relate to his builds he's like a mate down the road.. The car comunity is also massive world wide you don't need to know the language to understand what he is doing very good at what he does multiple channels and businesses = success 👍👍

That is true, I wanted to call out that his channel strategy is also genius. You can't copy his character, but you can use his strategy insights 👍
