Matthew McConaughey. You'd be hard pressed to find any movie fan today that doesn't know his name. From the handsome heart throb in Rom Coms, to winning Oscars in heart breaking dramas, Matthew McConaughey has turned his career into one most actors in Hollywood could only dream of. Though when first starting out it seemed Matthew McConaughey was doomed to spend his days churning out nothing but shirtless roles in rom coms. But Matthew McConaughey charted his own path and built a career that no one could have expected.

One correction: "A Time To Kill" was not one of those "forgettable films with macho titles" or that he moved on to play "serious roles" after it. It WAS a serious role, an intense film with Matthew playing a non-violent, subdued role.
@chloemchll3774
@chloemchll3774 26 күн бұрын
Agreed- it is an adaptation of a John Grisham novel where Matthew plays a small-time lawyer hired to defend a black man accused of murdering the men who raped his 10 year old daughter, in the deep South, with the KKK lurking in the shadows and the built in prejudice conflicting with how much we like the righteous retribution the father gets after the justice system failed his daughter. It was definitely an early attempt at a more serious role, and had a cast to back that up.

Yeah it shouldn't have been glossed over in the video, movie had a big cast too. First role as a leading man surrounded by Sam Jackson, Sandra Bullock and Kevin Spacey and he still stood out in his performance

He was *amazing* in True Detective. He's not just acting - that character lives in him somewhere just like the Joker lived in Heath Ledger. Interstellar was a fine scifi movie and he acted well but the character was just a normal guy. True Detective had him reaching for a very small part of himself that he had to amplify for that role and he did an extremely convincing job.

I agree that him as Rust Cohl is so iconic a performance that it’s up there with Ledger’s Joker. Especially because both roles were so unbelievably dark and both actors, albeit at very different points along the same journey, were both perceived as “romantic leading men” types, cuties who could make us laugh-and then when we saw Cohl or Joker, we completely forgot who was playing them because they had utterly disappeared inside the character.

Criminal of you to downplay "A Time to Kill". That was the film that made his name as a serious actor. It was his first serious dramatic role, surrounded by a stellar cast that he more than held his own against, as well as carrying the film as it's lead. Could almost swear you haven't actually seen the film, given that kind of disrespect being shown to it.

Talk about the McConnaissance of all movie careers. While his turn in romantic comedies was decent, his work in Killer Joe showed how excellent he was in dramas, and paved the way for more dramatic, memorable performances.

I think that flash showed earlier when he starred in “A Time to Kill” under Joel Schumacher. There’s such heart and passion in that performance; his closing statement of the trial is just beautifully written (since it is John Grisham’s book). And he’s also good in “Contact” in ‘97. I think “Killer Joe” came at the right moment for him to get out of the 2000s rom-com pigeon-hole & man that movie made me cringe (in a good way)

A Time to Kill was the first time I heard of Matthew McConaughey. He was excellent in that movie. I always thought the rom coms gave him an undeserved goofy reputation. He always had some serious acting chops. In A Time to Kill, he shared the screen with Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey, and he was every bit their equal.

Sure, it's not as good as Season 1, but it's hard to top a masterpiece, only Star Wars and Godfather have ever done it. Even season 3 was very good, they all felt like overdramatized documentaries.
