The Planet of the Apes franchise has a long and storied history. From it's original films starring Charlton Heston to the Tim Burton reboot, to the modern trilogy directed by The Batman's Matt Reeves, The Planet of the Apes have seen several different iterations. Though the new trilogy including Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and War for the Planet of the Apes seem to be overlooked in the scope of modern action franchises. Will Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes move the needle at all? Will Hollywood finally recognize this franchise for the masterpiece that it is?

Maybe the lesson is: Not every great franchise needs to have rabid fans. Maybe it's best for a franchise to just carve it's own niche and not have a billion fans talking about them all the time. We've seen the damaged done to Star Wars and the MCU because of it. It gets to be successful and take it's time for each movie. 3 years between the reboot movies really makes you appreciate everything.

I agree with you, but unfortunately the laws of capitalism do not. Unless there are hoards of fans the movies you’re referring to won’t get made in the first place. It’s not a movie but a series, but just look at Andor. Possibly the greatest piece of Star Wars storytelling since the original Empire and its beloved by a loyal following of fans - but it doesn’t have mass appeal because frankly it came along too late. Most casual fans had given up on Star Wars by then. I think it’ll die too soon for that reason. We’ll see a S2, maybe a S3, but I’m willing to bet the story won’t be given a chance to unfurl as intended. It’ll be cut down too soon. All because the mass of rabid fans isn’t there.

I like Ceasar's initial "NO" in hindsight because it comes just after Malfoy gives the iconic line. It's almost like the movie was teeing up a boring reboot, and Ceasar was not having it. It's like he was saying to the audience. "You're not getting that kind of movie."

Several reasons. 1) it’s not one of the existing “ too big to fail” corporate IPs. 2) you can’t see the majority of its stars as themselves, which brings the parasocial relationship with the actor aspect 3) it’s best works came before the era when we only followed films because they’re viral or seen as an “ event” from corporate marketing. The Reeves trilogy is some of the greatest studio work in decades, and some of the best work on the 2010s, but it was out when a lot of us were just kids who only watched cartoons. We like to pretend we’re very curious consumers, but as a people, we’re really not. We mostly give our money to the safe, sterilized options.

Also, I saw Kingdom otPotA yesterday; I think it's a worthy successor, and I hope this is the beginning of a new trilogy. Apes. Together. Strong.

Intelligent and thought provoking Sci-fi is not the norm. Even though I am not a fan of the Apes franchise, I respect it. Comic Book movies are not Sci-fi, Star Trek has been dumbed down, and Star Wars has become Disneyized. Thought provoking movies don't get a lot of praise today: 2001 - A Space Odyssey, Star Trek - the Motion Picture, both Blade Runners, Interstellar. The recent Dune movies are good, but much of the book is not in these adaptations. Ghost in the Shell was whitewashed because producers believe that Americans would not relate to philosophical Anime .. Need mindless action. RedLetterMedia said it perfectly. Average movies do well, because most audiences are average. Until movies are decentralized and cheap, we are going to be stuck with average movies.
@zimriel
@zimriel 19 күн бұрын
Allow me. The first movie was embraced by what became the Alt Right, like the "Paul Kersey" guy who was running the "Stuff Black People Don't Like" blog. The movie assumed that intelligence was a measureable and immutable aspect of the physical brain. It also had a research head, who happened to be Black, very interested in changing the brain, to increase intelligence. Unstated, but noted by "Kersey" (and other alert watchers): Black intelligence. The second movie, perhaps embarrassed at this fanbase, went and created an antigun parable. Couldn't tell you about the third movie; I didn't bother with it.
@chey6073

Imo it’s because as well written and visually incredible as it is…there’s something about it that’s not super memorable. We have the moment where Caesar says “NO!” and the moment where Koba rides through flames on horseback with a machine gun and then…that’s kinda it. The score is…fine. It’s not a story you can really market to kids or families. It’s not an epic with big moments like the MCU or LOTR. The original movie was decades ago so the novelty and newness has worn off. POTA is a quiet, contemplative, confident, and character driven trilogy. Without the incredible CGI, Im unsure if this trilogy would stay in the zeitgeist as long as it has.

It should also be noted that POTA is completely different from any of those franchises. It’s a pre/post apocalyptic trilogy with very few grand action sequences. In its current state, it can’t be treated like a Marvel or Star Trek movie because the stories are so self-contained and its world is so small. The POTA knows what it is and doesn’t strive to be any grander. It’s got that simplistic, down to earth beauty about it.

Other than Beneath which was just a mess, I thought they all had interesting narratives and they all felt unique within the franchise. I was most surprised by how much I loved Planet of the Apes 2001. Everyone dunks on it, but I was fascinated with how it took more inspiration from the Pierre Boulle novel than the original series of films. Plus I loved the music, and those practical effects are hard to beat.

I re-watched the reboot trilogy last year and I think it still stands as an incredible cinematic achievement, creatively and technically. The story and characterisation still give me chills. The cinematography and overall design is so beautiful. And it's a textbook example of how great CG animation can look if it's respected rather than beaten into submission. It was an astounding achievement by the team at Weta. I do wonder if part of the reason for it's retreat out of the spotlight is due to the recent media and public beatup of cg animation.

I literally just started watching this reboot trilogy ahead of the next film. I always loved the premise and idea of this movie but when they first came out I couldn't get into them. I was a fan of the Tim Burton remake and I still haven't watched the original movies but I liked the quirkiness, practical makeup, and other things mentioned that give it the vibe it is and I think that definitely threw me off with this reboot as well. I knew I would like these movies eventually because its right up my alley being a sci fi/action/thriller/ with some social commentary and thought put into it. Im currently in the middle of War for the Planet of the Apes and I have to say the Cgi was so much better so im excited to see how this new one looks with all the advancements in movie making. This video captured some of my thoughts because as im watching im wondering why this isn't as popular as it should be.

THe title of this video I've been wondering for awhile. Even today i saw a video posting top 10 trilogies and these movies weren't even there. This is a solid trilogy. Even Original Star Wars Trilogy slowed down with Return of the Jedi. So did Back to the Future. I think just Lord of the Rings and these Apes movies stayed solid all through out.

I've been a Planet of the Apes fan ever since I first found out about the movie, which was when i was 13. As much as i do agree that this franchise is heavily underrated, I also do believe its bitter sweet in a sense. It’s sad to know that they’re not known or loved as much as they should be, but also, I’ve realised how dangerous it can be once put into limelight. There isn’t a single franchise that has been tremendously popular that hasn’t gone downhill due to the pressure to now cater to a larger audience, MCU being a prime example. I love these movies to much and would hate to see these crumble under pressure but at the same time, they ought to be up there with the greats. I'd love to know what you guys think though, Wes Ball did a brilliant job with Kingdom Of The Planet of the Apes! I cannot wait for more.

I'm definitely in the OG5 camp. I didn't like that in Rise, the apes gained speech and sentience via a chemical. In Conquest, only Caesar was born with intelligence. But he still managed to organize their revolt, because through years of mistreatment, they had it in them anyway. For that reason, I never gave Dawn and War a chance. I need to fix that someday.

The biggest problem is that the majority of the characters ( especially humans) are either uninteresting or getting killed off/replaced between movies as a result you can’t connect to the story because they constantly move forward and go to different stories also there’s not enough action or big moments

@@pascalfernandes6957You can connect with him and Maurice and…who else? Blue Eyes had great character development and spotlight in Dawn but then he dies in the beginning of War. The characters with good side arcs die by the next movie (Will and Charles, Malcolm and Blue Eyes). Maurice and Rocket don’t have character arcs and they’re the only ones from Rise who survive to the end of War. 😬

I’ve never seen any of the POTA movies. The only bit of material I’ve ever watched was that one scene at the end of space balls where the apes show up lol. Just yesterday I watched the 1st movie (with James Franco and Andy Serkis). Always been a huge fan of Serkis. loved his live animation portrayal of Gollum so I came into this movie with an open mind and excitement. I was BLOWN AWAY. I loved Caesar so much. I was thinking about the movie nonstop. Finally the next night I throw on the 2nd movie (2014) and was so surprised how damn good these movies were and really nobody talked about them. I still have 2 more left to watch and I can’t wait. They are damn good. Wasn’t expecting to care so much about monkeys who hate humans. God damn these movies are awesome

It's a remake that nobody asked for, like almost every film that is coming out these days. I liked the 2000s version of Planet of the Apes as well as it's sequel. While that in itself was a remake, it was more necessary back then as technology and special effects had evolved significantly since the original version of the film. Much less has changed in film between the 2000s and now to warrant another remake. The only reason it's being done is because the dominant thinking in Hollywood right now is that remakes and sequels are always a safe bet.

25 year old here. I was brought into the apes world when I saw the trailer for rise and thought it looked like a really cool movie premise. My mom of course knew that it was a reboot/prequel. So she helped me buy and watch the original movies which I enjoyed even though they were obviously outdated by the time I watched them. But I loved them. And then I watched the Caesar trilogy and loved them even more. Just watched kingdom on Mother’s Day with mom. We both enjoyed it. I think many people love the apes franchise. It just doesn’t get the same media buzz as other franchises

I absolutely adore both. The original 5 films (the first 4 in particular) I genuinely adore. They are amazing examples of what science fiction should be... an examination of us. Conquest, in particular, still hits hard, and the actor playing Caesar gives the best performance of his long and impressive career. I will never write off the original movies. Ever.

The Apes movies are good, very, very good but, they don’t capture the imagination the way the MCU, Star Wars, or Star Trek do. In these latter franchises the creators created worlds that people want to go back to. The world of The Apes is kind of uncomfortable. It’s gritty and run down and a place people don’t really want to go to.

War for the Planet of the Apes is firmly in my top 10 greatest movies of all time. It was a thematic masterpiece and that trilogy is something I share with every friend and even got my spouse into them (someone who typically doesn't appreciate scifi). I watched kingdom on opening weekend and I was worried it wouldn't stand up in quality considering Wes Balls only other films were the terrible Maze Runners but it definitely stands up to the original 3 and I would put it on the same level as Rise. I'm excited for the new Noah trilogy.

The reference to Battlestar Galactica is a good one. The reboot PotA series feels more like a “reimagining” the same way Moore’s BSG took the ideas of the ‘70s show and retooled them into a less campy iteration.

I grew up absolutely loving going to the movie theatre’s! Crazy to me that it’s been 7 YEARS since the last Planet of the Apes movie. 😬 One out of maybe 4 movies I actually went out to watch in the last 7 years. 😅 I mean I got a really good projector, but some movies are meant to see in theatre’s. All the studios are pushing for that “only in theatre’s”/ and “must see on the big screen!”. Damn right when it comes to (not just) Top Gun 2.. but KotPotA movie, I will see theatrically. 🙌

Been watching the Reboot trilogy with my wife since she’s never seen them. Before we go see Kingdom. And man I gotta say these movies are still masterpieces. Just finished Dawn yesterday. 55+ years or so of remakes/sequels is s pretty good run. Almost as much as the James Bond films. My favorite POTA film will always be the original 1968 version but I'm 66 years old so that makes sense for me. I do like the new set of remakes and have watched all of them. I'll watch new film eventually. CGI can be a bit distracting at times but as a sci-fi fan I love what they can do with it. The acting in the original was a big part of the success. I don't feel that will ever be surpassed but the new remakes are better than many of the in-between films.
