Ive knocked down some big bucks from the ground. I walk, look for fresh sign and sit with the wind in my face. Lots of luck this way. Hunt fresh sign. Does are only an advantage during the rut. Otherwise hunt the buck sign.

The spot I hunt, it’s so true that they never showed up being in the open field. How many I harvested, all of them being taken inside heavy brush close to bedding area & pop up going to heavy timber, but never seen one in the open, at least not during the daytime hunting hours.

Had a buck last week pop up under the cotton wood trees just above the coulee and ran right into the brush (600 yards away no possible shot) . Never ran out to the field. I need to figure out how to setup for that.

in river valley woods with lots of steep hill's they travel in the bottom portion of the hill when then suns going down and in the mornings they will favor the top portion so they are catching the most thermal's. people need to realize a deer doesnt see the world like we do they see a big portion of the world through there nose. i mainly hunt public ground in iowa and you would be surprised at how some of these big public buck's are bedding in place's you would never imagine or in place's that in some case's makes it almost impossible to even set up on him. i hunted this one deer for 3 years on public that i never saw more then a few glimpe's of him from hundred's of yards away or on trail cam. then one day i finally figured out how he was able to slip me no matter what i did. he had 2 different bedding area's each with a few option's for wind adjustment where he could watch the parking area for the public ground and watch you walk in then slip out the back once you go by. i gave up on that deer lol. people think on public its always the further you go in the better but somtimes its those weird spot's that can be right next the a parking area or a road that nobody ever hunts that thse big deer will hide in because they dont get messed with in there

Iv'e hunted mature bucks for 35 years and I have realized not only they're killable but the have 3 different types of bucks. Agressive, Neutral and skittish. I hunt them all different by scouting for them and learning their pattern. While doing this I was able to harvest 34 Mature bucks with my bow. I have so much more to say, maybe later. Ice man

During the rut I have seen Mature bucks walking through shopping center parking lots , lol so during the Rut all of this in the video goes out the window and like they say during the Rut hunt the Does , because there WILL be bucks
@DavidBridge-u8d

First of all that would be a rare occurrence. Secondly I’ve never heard of a buck being shot in a parking lot so it would make sense that it he wouldn’t feel threatened. They aren’t concerned about cover when they run across a place like that. He’s in a rutting state of mind causing him to go where he normally would not. I think what they are referring to is what they do 80 percent of the year. Most of the time they will stay in the woods in cover but sometimes you see one do something odd like that and 95 percent of the time they are rutting .

@DavidBridge-u8d first of all I never said anything about hunting or shooting bucks in parking lots the point I was making is that during the rut you see bucks do weird things and see them roaming areas that you would never normally see a buck trust me I've probably forgot more about hunting than you will ever know boy

@@alexcika9906 Sounds like a great idea. I’m getting the fever watching these videos. I was out of work for almost a year and made only one hog hunt last year. I have a new bow and just need to take the time off and go. Maybe some public land deer hunting. I have a place to hunt pigs but not many deer there but anytime hunting is better than sitting at the house. Good luck to you this season.

Most mature bucks in western NY seem to travel in same general routes as other deer but they are just offset in the brush for the most part. They use trails at night or will come out on trails but mostly they travel in cover when able.

100%! Grew up (and still) hunt properies in western-upstate and north-nj and while the buck quality in NJ has phenomenally gone up in quality the past decade or so, what we now consider decent 2.5-3.5 y.o. 8 points that nowadays usually get the pass in nj, would be the “buck of a lifetime/trophy” for that part of NY. Are they bigger boddied in upstate? Absolutely, but despite having better foods and mineral sources than the NJ bucks, their antlers usually tend to be off by 15”-30” or so than what an NJ buck at that same age group would be. However, w/ that said, for upstate, there’s never been a place where I’ve seen more “multiple-point-antlered) bucks, such as 10, 12, 13, 14, and def 15 points by ages 3.5-4.5 easily. Like I said/you prob already know, 2.5-3.5 y.o. old points are a “trophy/great season” up in those woods to anybody already, anything over 10+ points, even if they tend to usually be 120”-140”ish at their peak size is the equivalent to a B&C buck for even states like NJ and PA.

@@portugal5698 The avg 4 year old by us is probably 120s score but body weight dressed is close to 200lb. Largest buck on hoof ive seen is a 7 year old that was easily over 300 on hoof. Colder weather means they hit that late corn hard. Tend to get plenty of fat by years end.

Good stuff! My best places for shooting big bucks is 100-150 yards from open areas. They often use the same travel corridors as other deer but at different times and with a lot more vigilance than younger deer. They know the thermals in the hill country I hunt and they use it to the maximum degree. I look for edge from thick to open forest and natural travel terrain with prevailing wind advantage coming to and from bedding and food. Subtle changes from year to year and buck to buck occur, so I seek sign/direction of current travel to narrow my hunt down. Keep up the great work guys! #BuckInTheTruck2024

Gonna keep a lot of this in mind as I’ve got a giant that’s been on property I can hunt for three years now. Hes a 5 year old deer judging by his body, and size. He doesn’t have the mass with his antlers, but the size makes up for it. He’s been elusive as hell as last year after 9/11, he showed up in daylight once. I have a clue as to where he’s living, but getting him to show has been hard. I’m hoping that this year is the year I get him. He’s a non-typical this season due to an injury between now and the end of late season in January.

I think if u have an opportunity to get a mature buck 8+ then take it. But I do not hunt typically for a trophy. The meat is usually tough and grainy. Does one to two years and smaller bucks spikes and 4 points are much tastier and easier to hunt. But everyone hunts for dift. Reasons me I just hunt for good tasting venison.

False. Deer are not nocturnal, they will feed about 5 times per day and yes in daylight, nocturnal deer is a myth
@RonAlfonse-t7y
@RonAlfonse-t7y 3 ай бұрын
@@SCDeerAddict You watch too many you tube videos. Or read that white tail habitat article too many times. Most all animals move at night more than in the daylight. It's safer, it's a survival instinct. The don't feed 5 times a day evenly spaced throughout the 24 period. That's why people hunt and fish largely in the early morning and in the evening and have for thousands of years. The rut is the exception.
@SCDeerAddict
@SCDeerAddict 3 ай бұрын
@RobertAllen943 If you say so. I have harvested more bucks in daylight than you can count, most after 11 am. I also catch trophy catfish mid day. I agree they are a dusk/dawn animal but they don't just vanish and not feed during daylight that's the myth part, may not be on the property you hunt but but if you have enough land to hold deer you can find them all day moving at some point in that day, multiple times per day, although the area they move in is much smaller.

I hunt North Louisiana, and the pressure here is unlike anything I've seen in the north, midwest, or even the rest of the south. Everyone thinks all the bucks are nocturnal here because they only hunt food sources and they do it waaaaaaaaaaay too often and even try to beat the deer to the bait in the mornings... I hope they stay off the youtube videos like you say and continue to believe the bucks are unhuntable, because I usually 2 of the better ones before the rut begins. Can't imagine how tough the early season would be if my neighbors actually knew how to hunt...
@BG-bx4ey
@BG-bx4ey 3 ай бұрын
@@RonAlfonse-t7yAlso, deer are crepuscular, which means their primary movements are around sunrise and sunset. That's why we hunt then, not because it's closer to night. Trail cameras that look at deer travel rather than high-risk feed prove this in the highest pressure area and the lowest.
