We all definitely need to learn more about these things. I heard about this girl (friend of a friend) whose boyfriend got annoyed when she had to deal with her period; he thought she could simply hold it in, like when you need to pee. It's also a real obstacle to education for girls many places, because they don't have access to sanitary products, so the alternative is to bleed at school. This keeps many at home, also because it's often a taboo subject

The one critique I would make of this video (and so many explanations of the menstrual cycle) is there’s never any mention of the work the uterine muscles do. It’s not as if a timer goes off in your uterus and your period just falls out. Menstrual cramps feel a lot like the onset of labor pains and there’s a reason for that. It’s the same muscles at work, trying to clear the decks so that the cycle can begin again. And when one considers that historically doctors told generations of women that cramps were all in their head, I think it only fair to make the facts at least as commonly known now, as that “common knowledge” was once upon a time.
@SatyaVenugopal3 жыл бұрын

Weird that they talk about variations but very clearly say that the menstrual cycle is 28 days long, and the pictures of different peoples' menstrual cycles also show 28 days for all of them. The variation between different people can actually be quite big, it's usually seen as a normal length cycle if it's anything between 20 and 40 days. Also, average is actually 29.3 days, recent studies have shown. Why people think 28 days is average is because when studies were done on menstrual cycles back in the day they purposefully only used women whose cycle was 28 days long, because if they used people with the same cycle length it was easier to compare the results between individuals, and they didn't actually know the average cycle length, they picked people with a 28 days cycle because they thought that was average.

Let's make a rule: Every time we talk about female biology, we need to make it cute and talk about empowerment. Oh... we're doing that already? ok. nevermind.

It's been my experience that almost every problem has an upside. For instance, I have always felt that my creativity was enhanced during my period. Wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar.

I agree. I used to hold onto the victim mindset that "women can't catch a break" but then I realized that was exhausting and getting me nowhere. I've found that sometimes I'm super confident on my period which allows me to do things that normally take forever. That doesn't happen every period but more often than not which is nice.

Daily reminder that some trans people do menstruate (not just trans man, non-binary people and people with other gender identities can too!) Seriously, it's not difficult naming them somehow. Like, you just can't pretend they don't exist lmao

Women: bleed from their uterus and get cramps. Men: bleed from the heart for getting yelled at for no reason. Then again if I did have cramps every month I would be kind of angry. And also the hormones.
