I am not surprised by the actions of Meta and other similar entities; what is truly surprising is the delay with which the BBC has approached this topic, or perhaps it was postponed for some time after recording. I mention this because both Al Jazeera and Al Jazeera+ reported on this matter a considerable time ago. This raises the question of why the BBC has chosen to address it at this juncture.

Meta's goal is NOT to keep users on their system. It's to make money. Just like any company. Where does the money come from? Mostly advertising revenue. This is impacted by the number and demographics of the users, but it is primarily impacted by the willingness of advertisers to pay Meta for advertising. If enough advertisers threaten to decrease or stop advertising payments, then Meta will respond in a way to keep them there. Additionally, Meta is large enough and influential enough that users aren't likely to leave Meta platforms for being shadowbanned. Rather, they are more likely to also post on other platforms where their content is less likely to be demoted. There is very little to lose by demoting powerless content producers if the financial cost of not demoting them is greater. There are also systemic biases, but these aren't necessary to explain motivation for demoting Palestinian content specifically. They could have just demoted content that spraks favourably of Oct 7 and the people who did it, but they chose a much more broad criterion that restricts speech on their platforms.

4:16 Palestinians in Gaza might only make up 20% of the followers but they might also have accounted for 80% of the interaction. Certainly local news is more important to local people. Not to say that the narrative is not being controlled in all sorts of ways and i am not saying that there is not suppression going on. It is just to say that the statistics evidence provided in this piece does not necessarily support the conclusion. Obviously the same does not apply to the leaked information.
