Despite some of the most powercreep the franchise has ever seen in Gen 9, good old Mewtwo, the original OP Legendary, remains an excellent choice in Ubers this time around thanks to its excellent stats, the signature move Psystrike to threaten key special walls, and a vast movepool with myriad coverage and utility options.

What helps Mewtwo *immensely* is the lack of Calyrex-SR in Gen 9 Ubers due to being banned to AG, therefore not having to compete with it for the niche of a Special-oriented Psychic attacker

that's true but arguably mewtwo's best quality is its blissey matchup (and now clodsire). while calyrex shadow hits harder, is faster and can snowball, unboosted calyrex psyshock is weaker than mewtwo psystrike. calyrex is the better mon overall but a lot of the time that extra power is excessive, and if the rest of your team is weak to blissey mewtwo is the better choice and will tear through the opponent to set up its teammates. mewtwo would even be great with calyrex to soften up the switch ins early. mewtwo is also far less predictable with a wide support movepool and superior defensive typing and bulk

Its interesting because when you look at the stats, Mewtwo has been power crept almost completely by Miraidon, which has better bulk, better typing, better speed, and better damage output through its ability. However, Mewtwo's movepool is still incredible and lets it do things Miraidon can't, like take on special walls or have defensive set options. That's pretty cool. I'm glad to see Mewtwo is still a good pokemon in Ubers!

Mewtwo isn't that impressive for Ubers standards anymore. Too many mons are starting to populate the ever crowded 130 speed tier, and can just outright one shot him due to his lacking defenses, and poor typing. As in, Flutter Mane that sits at 135 speed, and drops it with a shadow ball, Koraidon + Miraidon, that threaten the OHKO on the slightest chip damage with Sun boosted Flare Blitz and E-terrian Electro drift respectively. Zacian Crowned, even while nerfed with stats and abilities, outruns it and resists his stab Psychic, and still has very good defense stats itself to live neutral hits fairly well while threatening back massive damage. If Mewtwo can nail switch ins, then it'll do ok with a choice specs set. But make no mistake, Mewtwo is a far cry away from being even among the best Ubers. Mewtwo got access to nasty plot which is great, but that means little when you aren't fast enough to use it. In Gen 8, Yvetal was the among the very best Uber and stood up to even fuckin Calyrex Shadow was a reliable answer, and both of which utterly shit on Mewtwos face via outrunning it or dropping it with a dark aura boosted sucker punch. This is of course to say nothing of if and when Deoxys-A comes back and makes Mewtwo even less relevant than before. It is telling, that Mewtwo in Gen 9's currently recommended set is for support roles instead when the thing is built to be a sweeper. The old school Uber is finally starting to become a victim of power creep itself lol

I love how mewtwo even with a pretty bad type(my opinion),it shows that what matters is its movesets and stats,but of course tera also helps ALOT,i would say that tera is at the same time a broken but balanced ability,how?i dont know lol.

pure psychic was by far the best typing in the game in gen 1, it had no resistances other than itself and no weaknesses iirc. steel and dark types were introduced specifically to balance psychic, and bug+ghost gained super effective because that still wasn't enough. it's fallen off a lot from where it used to be but it still only has 3 weaknesses, has a very good resistance in fighting, and combined with most psychic types' dark pulse, aura sphere, flamethrower etc it's still good offensively

It just didn't have any good attacking moves other than Twinnneedle (locked to Beedrill, which was weak to Psychic moves) and Pin Missile (locked to Beedrill and Jolteon, and wildly inconsistent due to 85 accuracy, low base power, and most likely to only hit 2 or 3 times in Gen I with a low base damage). What Gen II changed was the addition of Megahorn as a bug-based counter to Psychic. Aaaand then they put it on Heracross, which is weak to Psychic moves. Ghost was also supposed to be super effective against Psychic in Gen I, it's coded to be super effective, and an NPC even mentions that Ghosts are supposed to be strong against Psychic. But there was a coding mistake that made Psychic immune to Ghost in Gen I. Even if it had actually been super effective, its only damaging move in Gen I that could take advantage of that super effective damage was Lick, with base 20 power. So... Yeah, Psychic was super OP in Gen I.

i personally liked how mewtwo was designed in gen 1 the most. it truly felt like a reward for completing the game in full, and it was so climactic for a final boss in an rpg. now that pokemon has shifted to be competitive, though, it's lost a bit of charm

I'm glad that they've mostly kept the max stats at 700 (I'm leaving out Mega-evolutions, Dynamaxes etc), where with many other "catch 'em all" series they add a new pool of creatures to make people want to upgrade their resources again. If the standard became Pokémon with Max 800, 900, 1000 it would kill the Rivalry to the end.

Team Rocket succeeded in creating an ultimate weapon I guess. Psystrike helps a ton and Unnerve is a slept on Ability for keeping an attack a 2 hit through resistance berries and pinch berries. Mewtwo’s story in the manga is sick too, creating a genetic bond between it and the scientist who created it. Seriously read Adventures if you want a bit more mature Pokemon story.

that isn't mewtwo that's sandwichtwo. mewtwo has base 744 stats and only appeared in pokemon rby, pokemon the first movie, and pokemon puzzle league before being replaced with sandwichtwo who from design to context, from stats to story, and meaning and execution is infinitely worse than mewtwo in every way. everything that made mewtwo mewtwo was stripped away but you all act like it's mewtwo simply because it looks enough like him and they call it mewtwo. you've all fallen for the sandwichtwo agenda

I was actually thinking about making an in depth youtube video about it one day. making a youtube video is sort of on my bucket list I guess just one of those things everyone's always wanted to do at one point could be fun. I'm a fan of mewtwo but I'm not a fan of how he's been degraded as a character and how they force him into every pokemon spinoff multiple movies but it's mewtwo in name only. it doesn't resemble the character introduced either in the generation one games or the first movie. as early as the pokemon manga they completely twisted his character. but at least some versions of sandwichtwo (mewtwo in name only) may be passable characters for what they are. the worse offenders in my opinion are detective pikachu "mewtwo" who's especially insulting because a quote from the director of that movie implies that he's the same one from the first mo no that's not happening. and I'd say pokemon x and y mewtwo as well. idk maybe my comments don't have much of a place on your videos as it's not too relevant to competitive pokemon but idk if i can just leave a throwaway commend to help people just think beyond "oh it looks enough like mewtwo it's white and purple and pokemon company calls it mewtwo so it must be" because in a lot of cases again in particular those two examples it is not mewtwo contextually, design wise etc etc.

Mewtwo is largely weakened due to the limitations of Mega and the weak psychic special attacking moves, in which the highest power move is Psystrike, which is only 100 power when comparing Mega Mewtwo to Mega Rayquaza( which has fewer limitations with a lot of powerful dragon moves with powers larger or equal to 120.) But I love Mewtwo, so I refuse to buy Pokemon games recently.😆😆😆

I hate to say this because he's my favorite Pokemon (along with Mew), but I wouldn't *quite* say perfectly. He was created to be the strongest Pokemon ever, and even without Arceus (granted, it makes sense that the Pokemon equivalent of *literal God* would be stronger) he's still faced quite a few Pokemon that match if not outright exceed his power. Even if we include mega evolution, there's Mega Rayquaza, who gets all the benefits of mega evolution *without* the penalty of losing his item slot. Speaking of mega evolution, what is up with Mega Mewtwo Y's base stats, particularly the base attack stat? Thematically, it makes some sense that in that form, Mega Mewtwo Y's base defense is lower than the base form. However, he could have kept the base 90 DEF, the 120 SPD, *and* have an extra 20 points to further distribute between Speed and SPA.

Keep in mind that Mewtwo has NEVER had a stupidly broken ability. Pressure has always been meh for Mewtwo past gen 3 where it at least could use it on stall sets and Unnerve hasn't exactly been hot stuff. Compare that to Kyogre or Groudon who have some of the most broken abilities ever conceived or Mega Ray or Xerneas the list goes on. Imagine if Mewtwo was ever given a broken ability 😂

The only game where Mewtwo isn’t good is in Pokémon GO, where almost every single team has a steel, ghost, or dark type, and the best Pokémon in the game is Melmetal, which shapes the entire metagame around it. Yet even in Pokémon GO, it still has a purpose: filter out the good ghost types from the bad. It’s like the club bouncer. It’s not necessarily in the party itself, but if you want to get in, you’re gonna have to take it up with him, which is why the only mythical in Master League is Darkrai.

Mewtwo survived the power creep because gamefreak keep updating him with attacks to deal with new threats and they nerf pokemon that can deal with him, like Darkrai. Aside from that, Mewtwo really is "the perfect pokemon", and I mean that because not only he is still one of the most powerful ubers but also he is versatile and his stats are just perfectly distributed.
