so how do you set up midi to where you can actually send audio from the midi keyboard to your computer and hear it on the computer?
@KorgKeyboardTutorial
@KorgKeyboardTutorial 7 жыл бұрын
Through "Audio" cables. Your keyboard's output (Main L & R) need to be connected to audio inputs which normally don't exist on a computer. You would need some kind of Audio interface with Audio inputs.

One way midi is well explained here, thanks! But what about hearing midi messages recorded in daw? In my case the chain is: midi contrôler OUT to Midi module IN midi module THRU to audiointerface midi IN= works fine Logically the midi return (hearing audio after recording) should be: midi audio interface OUT to midi module IN, but my controller is already plugged there !! ( ending with midi contrôler IN is not working maybe because it's empty of sound ) Music so great when machines is saving time !!

Hi there! really loved your tutorial. Thank you for this. I had a few questions though. If I want my midi controller keyboard to control my DAW as well as my outboard gear, how should I hook it all up? Should I: A) Connect the midi keyboard to the computer via USB, then have computer hooked up to midi-sport 4x4 interface via USB, which goes out to the different midi synths? B) Connect the midi keyboard to computer via USB ... AND midi out to midi sport 4x4, which then goes out to the midi inputs on the synths?

Hi Ramy....How are you going to be using those outboard gear though? Are you just gonna use them as traditional sound modules?
@RamytRamyt

Yes. All the synths will be connected to an Allen & Heath mixing board.
@KorgKeyboardTutorial
@KorgKeyboardTutorial 7 жыл бұрын
In that case I would do it this way: Controller --> Computer (DAW) --> Midi Box ---> Outboard Synths (With this set up your DAW pretty much echos the incoming data back into the midi box and from there you'll send the data into the synths). Other alternatives: Controller --> Midi Box --> Computer --> Midi Box --> Synth 1 --> Midi Box --> Synth 2 I haven't looked at the midi patch bay specs that you have, but in general this could be an option as well. Or you can go : Controller --> Midi Box --> Computer --> Midi Box --> Synth 1 --> Synth 2 The good thing about the first alternative is that you may experience less latency.
@RamytRamyt
@RamytRamyt 7 жыл бұрын
Cheers! Thanks for this. I have quite a few synths (don't ask why I'm only setting them up now after owning a collection for years), so I'll probably end up daisy chaining them out of the box via the different channels. That said, I'm thinking the first option is best so deal with the least latency. Really appreciate your help!

tks for the video, very helpful. Now mine is a bit complicated i need help in setting it up. I have a Korg volca sample, it only has a midi in! no midi out. But I would like to play my volca throught the midi controller keyboard . I also have my audio interface: my midi cable is in the Midi in of my Volca, and midi Out of my keyboard which is plugged into the computer via USB. I also have a Y jack that goes from my volca to my audio card which enabled me to record audio on my audio track in Logic Pro X. But I want to record midi notes now and here's what's happening with my current setup when I try:

sidenotes: there are 10 parts in the volca that can contain a sample, but each have their own midi channels; * I have midi in and out on my sound card, but nothing plugged to it. --1- External Instrument Track created in Logic specs: Midi Destinaiton: controller keyboard (akaimpk49) port 2/ Midi Channel: I have a choice of 1 to 10, each channel plays a corresponding sample (*choosing ALL doesnt do anything) therefore if I create a song with the volca, I have to do switch midi channel for every track to hear a different sample//// input: In the list I have a choice of (1-2) only, but i selected nothing. ---2- when I press record, it only records the midi data but as long as my volca is powered on, I will hear the sound, if it's not on, there is no sound. ----3- sidenote: I have been able to sync my computer with the volca so that when I press play, the track and the volca is playing on my computer. now it how can I record the sound coming out of the volca through midi without having to power it on?

Hello there! I have been using Korg sequencer to edit midi files and write my own arrangements. At first on PA80 (sold) and later on KorgPAx3. Now, due to pandemic, I have to sell my PAx3 and since, I was looking for a software or daw similar with KORG sequencer that I use to know and work verry nice with. I mean, interface, graphic, sounds selection, maybe styles that I used to have for my midis. I know that are a lot of DAW-s outhere, I have licensed Studio One from my Presonus mixer, tried Cubase a little, but call me stupid, it is hard for me after 20 years of work with keyboard sequencers to jump in DAW and master it, the way I use to do with PA3x... And really seems to me much complicated and time consuming workflow. I play guitar and sing with backing tracks, so I only create midis and after that mp3, the PAx3 made this easy. No interest and no time to produce other things or play around. So, my question is there a software with similar interface and capabilities as the one on KORG PA3x? Thanks for any sugestions one may have! And please pardon me if I am offtopic, but I have been searching everywhere and the internet is flodded with the same daw tutorials I don't handle. Thanks again!

Hi Emilian. Personally, I've never used a 'arranger' type of software at all. Though on Korg Forums I've seen a number of users talking about 'Band In A Box' software. I think you can use it to program backing tracks and things of that nature. It's definitely not a DAW. I don't think a standard DAW would have auto accompaniment features for their sequencers.

Thaks, great video! I still have a question tho. Let's say I have a computer/daw and 3 synths, I'm trying to set up for a liveset: I decide use my computer/daw as master and want to send DIFFERENT MIDI messages to each synth at the same time ( I want synth A to do an arp. 8bars, synth b a simple 4 note melody...) What do I need?
@KorgKeyboardTutorial
@KorgKeyboardTutorial 4 жыл бұрын
You can either go direct or daisy chain. What are your connector types for each synth?
@soma6633
@soma6633 4 жыл бұрын
If I don’t misunderstand what a connector is they are MIDI IN. But if I make the daisy chain wouldn’t it be the same MIDI signal for every synth?
@KorgKeyboardTutorial
@KorgKeyboardTutorial 4 жыл бұрын
It’ll be more work because you would have to set every keyboard to s different midi channel. The easiest most straightforward approach would be to go direct. If you have a midi interface with 3 Midi-out, you could connect each keyboard directly. If that’s not an option, you could use a midi to USB type of connector (such as M-Audio UNO) to connect each device to a USB port. that means you have to have 3 available USB ports. MOTU makes a number of affordable midi patch bays. I have the MOTU XT. It has 8 midi In and 8 midi Outs. I even have s full walkthrough video on my other channel

@@soma6633 If you're thinking about adding midi devices down the road, I strongly suggest a midi patchbay. If not, then this direct usb connection should totally work. I've done it many times. Once you make that connection, you'll be able to select the proper midi device for the output of each midi track. In other words, you'll be able to decide which midi track triggers which synth. You can even try a powered usb hub, but I'm not sure if bandwidth becomes an issue.

He would probably use a midi patch bay. He wouldn't daisychain 6 midi devices. That's too long of a chain for live performance, as the latency would be too great.

@KorgKeyboardTutorial
@KorgKeyboardTutorial 7 жыл бұрын
Let me see if I got this right. You have 2 keyboards....a Korg M3 and a midi controller. The midi IN port of Korg M3 is already taken because it's connected to a scale converter box. At the same time you want to use a midi controller to control the M3? This is not going to be possible with this set up. You would probably need an additional midi patchbay where everything is going to get plugged into.

Well, if your keyboard has a midi over USB connection then you can connect it to the computer directly, but if it only has the traditional 5 pin jack...you could either get an audio/midi interface or buy one of those midi to USB cables. If you' don't care about recording audio, then just get a midi to USB cable.

I still dont get it...Is it possible to connect a Roland jdxi to a matrixbrute, so they are synced? If so, how? I assume midi is the answer. I want to use the sequencer on the jdxi so I can layer/playback multiple patterns, like, drums (jdxi) with another track being the matrixbrute sounds (and include the jdxi's digital synth tracks if possible). I have both systems but have no idea what kind of connections I can make between the two. One thing I know for sure; I want to use the jdxi's multi-track sequencer but I want one of the tracks to be the matrixbrute sounds. But midi doesnt transfer sound!! I dont get it. Maybe what I want to do isnt possible? I'll never understand why there are so many analog synths that have ONE-track step sequencers... Multiple tracks can expand the possiblities massively. This is the main reason I bought the Roland jdxi; 4 track, 16 step sequencing! The jdxi uses a different channel (fixed) for each of its tracks. I assume I just need to set the midi channel on the brute to match one of the channels on the jdxi. But not sure which midi in/outs need to be connected on either device and any other settings that need to be adjusted. I just want all the crazy sounds I create on the brute to be sent to one of the jdxi's channel, where I can then play it back on the jdxi sequencer, while overlaying the 3 other jdxi tracks. I have no idea how this works but I have an idea how I want it to work. Ideally I just wish the matrixbrute had the 4-channel sequencing like the Roland has. Then can actually create 4 track sound patches.... actual songs with background layer, drum, bass and a 4th layer. Matrixbrutes 1 track sequencer doesnt cut it for me but I got it anyways because what I want to do must be possible, I HOPE.

Well if you want to know about midi and midi signal flow, this is a much better video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqSZY3qJlrVoZ6M Midi does not carry audio at all. Once you get past the midi connections and get the synths to do what it is you want them to do, then the next stage would be to worry about handling and managing the audio output of all devices in the chain.

Tutorials for Midi & KORG Arranger Keyboards So is it possible to run the audio signal from one synth "A", into another "B", and apply "B" synths effects to the incoming "A" audio signal. I thought this was called "modulation". Most youtube vids dont go into how the devices connect.
@KorgKeyboardTutorial
@KorgKeyboardTutorial 6 жыл бұрын
The answer for this has nothing to do with midi at all. This is a very gear specific question that only relates to whatever Synth B you're using. In any case if your Synth B has 'AUDIO INPUT JACKS' , you would need to connect the audio out jacks of synth A to audio in jacks of Synth B. Now AUDIO signal of synth A should travel through Synth B. As far as adding effects to the incoming signal, each device has its own routing matrix. For that you would have to find a video that uses that particular synth.
@supercommando440
@supercommando440 6 жыл бұрын
OK did the A to B (audio in to audio out) with a few different cases. A (roland jdxi) to B (MicroKorg)... works as you described. The roland signal just travels to the Korg and out it's speaker. Perfect. I did the same thing with A (roland jdxi) to B (MatrixBrute) and it doesn't work at all because, according to what Arturia told me, their "Audio In" doesn't work this way. Pretty LAME. When I did that setup, every key on Roland would play the same MatrixBrute note. So Audio IN on a MatrixBrute is not what you'd expect.
@KorgKeyboardTutorial
@KorgKeyboardTutorial 6 жыл бұрын
So how does the Audio In on a MaxtrixBrute work then? Is it just a pass-thru? You can't add any native Arturia effects to those inputs? How is this possible?

If you're not planning on getting a midi patch bay, the only way would be to daisy chain the set up this way: Midi Controller --> Korg Keyboard --> Computer This way you can control Korg and at the same time send the midi data out to the computer. In fact....with this set up, it won't make much sense to even use the controller, because you can just use the Korg keyboard as your master.
