This is the first comprehensive and useful site I've ever seen. It is a no-nonsense overview restricted to the necessary factual information and avoiding attempts - successful or unsuccessful - to be "entertaining". Can you direct me to the In The Mix site that would address the question whether an AKAI EWI usb controller, which has only a usb output, would work passed into a usb "hub" where a usb-MIDI adapter has its usb end in a different hub port andits MIDI end is in the "MIDI in" port of a target MIDI device (in my case, a Roland Sonic sound module) that does NOT have a MIDI chip? Thanks!
@InTheMixReviews
@InTheMixReviews 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, sorry about the extended delay in responding. I'm not sure about the AKAI EWI, but I have a number of synths. For example the Korg Pa4x does not have a midi class compliant usb host port, so you would have to use a usb midi adapter in between in order to connect a usb breath controller....whereas Korg Kronos does not need that 3rd party usb host adapter for the same connection. This is something specific to each particular device. In other words your target midi device has to have a midi class compliant usb host port to support a direct connection.
@paulfleming3599
@paulfleming3599 4 жыл бұрын
@@InTheMixReviews: Thanks! Your reply is clearly worded, and gives me some expectation of success. I am not sure that the USB port on my Roland Sonic cell is midi class compliant, but if it is not, it appears that I can use a USB to MIDI adapter and connect the MIDI end to the MIDI in port of the Sonic Cell. I haven't bought the Akai USB controller yet, but can buy one on approval and try it both ways. I'll let you know the result.

I've never used an android tablet, but i've done it with a number of iPads multiple times. I connect the MIDI Out (keyboard) to the MIDI In of iRig MIDI 2 which is a MIDI interface for iPhones, iPads and such. It's made by IK Multimedia. And then the tablet or phone gets connected to that midi interface. That's one way of making the connection work. Is it possible to connect my Tascam 2x2 with the Digidesign 003 mixer via MIDI, if possible how can i do it? I want to use it to control Logic Pro X.
@InTheMixReviews
@InTheMixReviews 3 жыл бұрын
But why would you want to do that? Why not just connect the 003 directly to the computer? To answer your question, theoretically, you would connect the midi out of the device to the midi in of the target device. I still don't see a point in doing this though. If you're having trouble with using the 003 as a control surface with Logic, you should totally do a search on Avid's forum. I'm sure there are many posts on the subject.

Let me tell you this. I have a Korg Pa4x that has both DIN and USB ports. It's not possible to connect a midi controller/device directly to the USB port. You would have to use a device such as 'Kenton' in between. In your case the question is, does the Casio accept midi DIRECTLY through the USB port from another midi device? Or only from a computer? If yay, then yes you could totally do that. If nay, then you would need a converter between the two. You need to study the USB/Midi section of the manual to see how the midi flow is supported on the Casio.

@InTheMixReviews
@InTheMixReviews 2 жыл бұрын
You could, but that would be a model specific question. This video is only an overview of midi in general. After you properly midi the X3 to your computer, there are 2 additional steps you would need to take. 1) Look at the manual of the keyboard to figure out which midi commends (generally Program Change messages) are assigned to which sound. 2) Figure out how to send those midi commends to the X3 using your DAW or whatever program you're using.

@@Fghjk-hs9zd As mentioned in this video, midi has no sound of its own, so the only way to listen to the midi file with those VST synth sounds outside the DAW is to render and export as wav or mp3 or any other audio format in general. Now back to the midi file you've exported. When you play that file, it's actually using the soundfonts installed on your computer. They're normally low quality sounds for general midi configuration. There are some synth soundfonts in there. If you want to listen to your midi file with those sounds, you'd need to go back to your DAW and assign the proper Program Change to each track. Right now all of your tracks seem to be assigned to 0 which is normally a Piano sound. Look up the General Midi table to see which number represents which instrument. Let me know if you had any questions.

Is there more latency if I connect first the masterkey to PC and through PC I play masterkey for controlling the synth sounds? Since I want to connect my master keyboard to PC and also the synth to PC, and sometimes control the synth by midi message from master keyboard, what is the best connection without having latency??
@InTheMixReviews
@InTheMixReviews 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think you'll have more or less latency either way...unless your computer is doing something funny that's adding additional latency. For that you really have to try and see what's happening with this type of Synth A --> Computer --> Synth B type of set up. As far as the best type of midi connection? There isn't a general answer for this. It really depends on your workflow but answer this question. Are you planning on actually playing Synth B (slave) from time to time, or you just want to use that strictly as a sound module (slave) at all times ? Also what type of midi connectors does it have?

Glad you found it useful. Well, if you need a two way communication, you would connect the midi out to midi in, and midi in to midi out. (Keyboard/Saffire pro). There's no other way...unless you decide to bypass the audio interface altogether. In that case, you would need a midi to usb converter cable (such as M-Audio Uno). Same idea with Yamaha reface or any other keyboard for that matter. As long as you follow the signal flow discussed in this video, that's all there's to it. Now what happens within Logic Pro X? That I don't know as I've never used Logic. I don't know what steps you need to take within the software to receive midi.

@@InTheMixReviews Hi there, thank you for your answer I will look at this with your point of view. By the way, I am new to the world of digital music (started in 2012). It took me a while to understand audio files and midi files in my DAW. Now, I have a synth -XP50- from 1995 and I wonder if and how I can record it into a midi track (software track), you know instead of the audio looking like a audio file it looks like midi. Or is this older synth just like any other electric instrument like guitars and can only be processed as audio? My new MODX7 has usb and can be recorded in midi.

Midi is not to be confused with audio. With older keyboards you definitely need a midi cable for midi transmission and audio cables for audio. It's still the same with many modern keyboards. I'm not familiar with MODX7, but it probably has separate audio output that need to be connected with 1/4'' audio cables to your audio interface.

@inthemix Could I avoid buying another MIDI interface by just daisy chaining all my synths from my computer as master, going through the thru's of my MIDI controllers? @InTheMixReviews
@InTheMixReviews 6 жыл бұрын
How many synths/midi devices are you going to have in the chain though? You really have to try and see if you can get away without getting bugged down with extended delays and such. For the second part of your question, say you have daisy-chained a computer and 3 synths. You can set each synth to receive data on a separate channel. For example, if you set Synth C to channel 3 (globally), then that will only receive data that are being transmitted on the same channel (3). The other two synths will only pass through the data but will ignore it.

I don't see why not. If your computer/DAW is successfully transmitting data through 2 different midi interfaces simultaneously, then it should work. Keyboards don't care where or how the midi notes are generated. As long as it shows up at their Midi In port and they're set to receive data on those channels, you should be good to go. I would just give it a try.

The problem with daisy chaining as described above, is there’s a “latency” issue. Timing. You’ll need to make sure that either you can fix the latency problem within your DAW program or you’ll need a MIDI box (like the Motu Midi Express box or like swap box) to fix the timing issue between your various controllers/keyboards etc. The data from each daisy chained controller or keyboard will not be in sync as in the data doesn’t reach your Master &/or DAW all in unison). When daisy chaining several keyboards & synths etc the data will not all be timed the same by the time you get to your DAW program. Research latency issues with MIDI controllers. Midi connection boxes can fix timing (latency) & connection issues.At least this is my understanding of how daisy chaining can cause latency problems. Hope this helps a bit?

it's a pain indeed. You just have to try a few things. So your chain would be Boss (Master)---> Keyboard (Slave) ----> DAW (Slave) . The Boss will provide the tempo using its own internal clock. The JD Xi's clock and DAW need to be set to external....which means they'll receive the tempo information from the master in the chain.

No, 5 pin jacks and usb don't transmit different signals. @@wulliammartinjr4640 Ok so you said " I just want to midi my Yamaha moxf keyboard to connect into the computer ...". Possible scenarios: 1) If you have a midi interface connected to your computer, you would connect your keyboard to that midi interface as specified in this video. 2) You do NOT have a midi interface. Then you have 2 options: A) You would need a midi to usb converter cable (such as M-Audio Uno). B) you would connect the moxf using a standard usb type A/type B cable...that is if your keyboard offers this option which probably does. You would normally need to install a driver on your computer in order for this option B to work. This is for the physical connection side of things. The next step would entirely depend on the DAW of your choice. Each DAW has their own specific instruction as to how to create a midi track and then choose that particular midi device (mxof in your case) within the DAW. That would be a question for whichever DAW you're working with. Once you have set up your DAW properly to send or receive midi with that mxof ....meaning you're able to send or receive midi data between DAW/Keyboard, then you would also need to connect the audio output of your keyboard into your audio interface, but again that would be an audio connection and not midi.

Thanks for your advice,I do have a Presonus audiobox interface hooked up to the computer,and the only way to hook my Yamaha keyboard to the Presonus audiobox interface that's hooked into the computer is with my UZ16 USB midi converter cable with the 1x1 pluggins, it's the exact same as the M audio Uno converter cable that you spoke of using, it's just the name brand is a Yamaha brand converter cable hook up that hooks up the same way to serve the same purpose.I have the converter cable hooked up to the back of the Presonus audiobox interface,and the USB end of the converter cable plugged into my Yamaha mofx8 keyboard so it's hooked up according to your instructions that way.I tried at first to hookup my Yamaha keyboard using a regular 1/4 inch regular guitar chord to plug my Yamaha keyboard into the Presonus audiobox interface to find out that this 1/4 inch regular guitar chord was faulty and caused a lot of loud noise so that I couldn't use it.But I do have the keyboard hooked up like you said to the interface with the converter cable.My Question now is do I still need to leave my a type b chord plugin ,plugged into my Yamaha keyboard which offers this hookup also,since I already have the keyboard going to the Presonus audiobox interface now with the Yamaha keyboard converter cable,or should I just unplug that a type b chord thats hooked up straight from the Yamaha to the computer , because I wouldn't need the Yamaha keyboard to be plugged 2 different ways into the computer at the same time now would i?Or would it hurt,or cause any damage or problems to have the Yamaha keyboard plugged into the computer through the interface to the computer,and also straight from the Yamaha keyboard to the computer at one time like that, because I have options to have it plugged up both of the ways that you suggested,But I think that it would be safer to unplug the, a type B, plug now wouldn't it?So as not to have the Keyboard hooked up into the computer at one time,2 different ways, because the keyboard is routed 2 different ways into the computer now,and I don't think that it would be to safe for the keyboard to be hooked up that away would it ?

It’s alway nice to work with good gears but you can still create music with cheaper alternatives until you can upgrade

"MIDI is almost a four year old technology" Huh? It will be 40 years old in 2023...

@@symbiat0 Literally 2 seconds later the audio says, "it hasn't changed much since it was introduced and revised in early 1980s...". Let's say you couldn't hear well, but how did you do the math on that? ;)

Lmfao the first example of MIDI sounds like the soundtrack to Dragon Quest 11. The quality of that soundtrack is embarrassing because they only used MIDI for the Ps4 version
