Speaker:
Dr Wang Tao
Chief China Economist, UBS Investment Bank
Date & Time:
Thursday, 15 June 2023
9:00 am - 10:30 am
Abstract:
China’s economy has defied many predictions of doom before, but great new challenges are now piling up. Old issues including falling productivity growth, high debt, property sector imbalances and high inequality remain. What adds to the woes is the continuous fall in fertility rate causing its population to decline. The country is also facing increasing technology restrictions and decoupling pressures from the United States. How might China navigate these challenges ahead? Can the government remain pragmatic as in the past, and adopt policies and reforms to help sustain growth? The speaker will build on findings from her recently released book published by Routledge, “Making Sense of China’s Economy”, to discuss these questions at the seminar.
About the Speaker:
Dr Wang Tao is a Managing Director and Chief China Economist at UBS Investment Bank, having worked at BP plc, the International Monetary Fund and DRI/McGraw-Hill. She is an invited fellow of the China Finance 40 Forum. Dr Wang received her PhD in economics from New York University and BA from Renmin University in Beijing.
