When I teach mindmapping I regularly encounter people who say "but I'm a auditory learner (or a read/write learner) - I can't learn from a visual map". So I have a little challenge for them. Next time they sit down to watch a film, turn off the vision and see how much they enjoy listening to the soundtrack alone, or reading the transcript alone. We are ALL multi-channel learners. Don't limit yourself by preconceptions based on a gross misinterpretation of the science. Keep and open mind and give the technique a fair trial.

Summay: - Mind maps are a great way to build relationships between different pieces of information because they allow you to visually connect ideas and concepts in a flexible and intuitive manner. - Don't rely software on writing mind maps as it may inhibit your ability to engage in higher-order thinking. - Use images and symbols to help you remember and connect the information. This can also make your mind map more visually appealing and engaging. - Avoid using too many branches or too much information on each branch. Keep your mind map simple and easy to understand. - By using chunking in your mind maps, you can make complex information more manageable and easier to understand and remember.

Great extension of Bloom's Taxonomy. Really landed categorizing in terms of importance and prioritizing. Main take away was simpler grouping for expansion.

A good way to avoid having huge lists: You can be radical and only allow 4 arrows to leave any point. It forces you to prioritize and group things better. You can start 100% radical with no exceptions until you improve. I find a subject like history the best to practice, since you can focus on the relationships and do a "linear" backbone that works like a timeline/cause-effect of events. You can branch up or down to elaborate and train your chunking.

I have used mind maps. It is very effective when you actually use it to retrieve information from your mind after a study session. But if you try to map the information as you are reading it, its a problem. One if the writing is confused the map will be confused. Mind maps are more effective if you try to retrieve the information as it is perceived by the brain. It should not be used any other way. If done properly you can recall information even after 20 years. Otherwise zilch.
@eli8069
@eli8069 2 жыл бұрын
I sort of agree with this but again the mind mapping before and during the study session is a skeletal one. It is meant to be added to or reorganized. Its priming the mind to learn the concepts in meaningful relationships. Rather than facts first and concept relationships later. It's a reversal of the way you do it.

My experience is 100% the opposite - mapping as you go forces you to read much more actively, to prioritise and categorise the information and look for connections. If the writing is poor, it is your job as the learner to take responsibility and find the structure hidden in the information. Or to find a better source that doesn't require you to work so hard to make sense of it. Don't surrender your power to the author - there's nothing that says you have to use their structure. Get an overview of the info they are offering, and re-organise it to meet your needs.

@@tullochgorum6323 How can you map as you go if information you learn later on indicates previous key ideas logged on your map really weren't that important, or that you misunderstood relationships, can further categorize them, etc.? I'm trying to apply the MM Technique to a book about history, and have categories like location, time, people, and belief systems, but sense I'm missing something.
@tullochgorum6323
@tullochgorum6323 Жыл бұрын
@@briannicholson9041 It's important to see your map as a rough draft. If you use keywords rather than extended text, it only takes a couple of minutes to do another draft and restructure it if you discover a better approach as you read. With difficult texts it might take a number of attempts to get things right. My drafts are very rough and ready - I prioritise speed rather than presentation. Then I'll do a fair copy if I need the map for future revision or reference. Each draft is a valuable active learning experience - FAR more effective than passively writing a lengthy precis following the author's structure like most students do. And of course you shouldn't neglect the pre-reading. You can orient yourself by reading shorter articles, encyclopaedia entries, condensed introductory texts, skimming the main text and so on. This can help you understand the structure of the subject matter if the author isn't being very helpful.

On chunking, I’m noticing in your examples that those that are less successful have five or more branches for each node. While it suggests a lack of prioritization or significance, it also aligns with the idea of cognitive overload. We have a limited amount of information we can hold at one time, typically 3 plus/minus 2 (see “The Magical Number Seven” in the literature). So aim to chuck (or as you later say, “group”) with no more than 1-5 branches coming off from a node. That exercise will force you to prioritize and establish significance.

It seems like if you had a reservatory or folder that you could perform a mind dump to on a spontaneous basis. you would have a list of organic thoughts at that point you could assign shapes or symbols or pictures to. Then instead of a logic style mindmap with corresponding shapes that follow traditional protocol, You could add meaning to the shapes and could then drag your thoughts and ideas onto the map to rearrange them and create an order that would be intuitive and logical and would capture the essence of the intrinsic self. Your thoughts?

The examples you showed us make me think that, in some cases, the authors put the verbal structure of their readings simply in another forms. So, what is your opinion about integrating mmappimg with tecniques such as Question-Evidence-Conclusion, or SQ3R method as starting point? Thank you.

What are your thoughts on mind-mapping for language learning? So much of the process is passive, learning through comprehensible input, so I wonder how or if at all mind mapping could benefit that progress. At the beginning of my language-learning journey I used memorisation apps like Anki as was the recommendation in a lot of communities, and I definitely found that language I wouldn't see in native material just wouldn't be retained even if I was seeing it in the repetition program and I think it was mostly because there was no true context for the information. I recently started using Obsidian Notes (which I heard is related to Bloom's taxonomy) but I can rarely think about how things should be related, so a lot of concepts just end up as orphans and it feels a bit pointless. I don't know if it's a language thing or if I'm just not used to this kind of data-keeping but I thought I'd ask your thoughts anyway... Interesting videos.

I find mind-mapping vital for understanding grammar patterns. The way they are presented in most textbooks is woeful - great slabs of text that are impossible to process and memorise. A crisp map makes it FAR easier to remember the main concepts, and forces you to figure out how everything works together. For example verb tenses can be clearly represented on a timeline, with just a little imagination. For vocabulary, I'll take key areas like conjunctions and map the high-frequency words by function. Adding locus and colour makes them easier to remember. I then use the map as a prompt when I'm speaking or writing - it enables you to access all your words in a moment instead of having them buried in a huge flashcard deck. I might also do the same for narrow specialised topics - especially visual ones like mountaineering where I may have to remember vocab in stressful situations. But you can't do this for thousands upon thousands of words - just for strategically important tops. For general vocabulary the absolute key, for me at least - is to USE it regularly in conversations and self-talk and writing. It's far better to REALLY master a small repertoire of words and collocations till they are automated, than to learn thousands of words that take you seconds to recall. You only have milliseconds in a real conversation. Most people try to cover too much ground without truly mastering what they already know. Obviously I'm talking about active vocab here. Your passive vocab will grow on it's own as you interact with native materials. By the way, flashcards do have a role - but only a minor one. Anything more than 2-3 new words per day quickly becomes unmanageable and you end up grinding through decks for hours every day. So you have to be SUPER selective. Just a few key low-frequency words that you are having trouble remembering. And if you repeatedly forget them, have a deep think about how to remember them with a mnemonic or by looking up the history of the word - or maybe just drop the word and learn a synonym instead?

One thing I don't get about Justin's approach to mind maps is, say I have a relationship between price and price controls, and I want to say that price controls relate to prices by distorting them, it would seem natural to label the arrow, but rarely see Justin doing that. In general do people label the arrows? Otherwise you just have an arrow from price controls to prices that may be directed but doesn't say anything about the content of the relationship

Wow you're doing great things by teaching students... How old are you though? Because you look very young but because of your years of experience you must not be as young as i think lol...

How "mindmapping is extremely effective", then in another video you post "Are Mind Maps a WASTE OF YOUR TIME?" Seriously, how do we trust what you are saying?

Wow. You clearly watched both videos instead of just reading the titles. The 2nd title asked a question. Are they a waste? It didn't say they are a waste. The 2 videos have the same conclusion and ideas presented from a different starting point.
