Hello. My mother had so many things. She didn't place things in cabinets. The counters in the kitchen were always crowded with bottles of seasonings. It was too much. When I moved away I only had two cups. Two plates. Two spoons. One pot to boil water. One skillet. One coffee maker. One cup to drink coffee. I didn't even put up pictures, or art. I had a table with 2 chairs. One futon to sleep on. A small table for the phone, and one lamp on the corner. A fan. It was a simple apartment.

Agreed agreed agreed. But boy is it hard to achieve this when you live with others, especially others who can’t let go of *anything*. The only way I stay sane is to keep my own personal stuff as minimal as I can, and try not to judge the rest… Nicely said, Peter, wishing you well from afar! 🌻

It's not always easy when living with non-minimalists! I also struggle with this at times. Living with others means 'give and take.' I think the best approach is to lead by example with our own things and mindset, to possibly inspire loved ones. And find a middle ground when it comes to communal spaces/things. But we can't force others to change their ways, so we also have to accept that. Thanks for watching, Penny! 🙂

I became a minimalist and completely decluttered my home after watching hoarders!

Crazy show, right? I was horrified seeing how some houses were so stuffed people hardly had space to live in it.

An interesting experiment is to go stay at a hotel for awhile. You just feel so.... relaxed! That's the way I like my space. Figure out what you really NEED and use, junk the rest. I love doing hotel style living. Well, obviously I like having my coffee maker and my ultra fuzzy rug. But I like having CLEAN SPACE! My room mate is a hoarder. Our worlds are like 2 different universes. His area feels heavy and dirty.

Ugh. I am in a stage of life where I am so overwhelmed with my toddler. Random socks, blankets, books, half eaten food, stains, overflowed bins and stationary everywhere. And this is someone who as a person, probably owns as much as you do. Its the childs constant needing of me, that makes it hard. Before him, I used to be able to deep clean the house within 2 hours a week. And rarely touched the hoover or stained the carpet. Now, I usually hoover twice a day and remove a stain at least once a day. 😭🙄

"Control of my time" what a wonderful statement! I am not quite as minimalistic as you but close...I have always been frugal. But time is something we all need and STUFF can surely occupy a lot of it. Having a 3 bedroom home, with only 4 rooms I use, (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen/living and laundry) and only items I actually use and need gives me lots of time as a retiree to take classes, go for coffee with friends, etc. Time is important!!! I am so happy to live this way. I feel at peace.

Thank you - I’m nearly 84 and am in the process of decluttering and do find it difficult in letting go of sentimental things from the country where I lived previously. They do need to go otherwise my family will have to do it. I appreciate your advice.

Wow, that's really cool you watched my video and are looking into decluttering sentimental items from living in a past country! I made a video on how to declutter sentimental items that you may find helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIKqnJ6ticujma8. I hope this doesn't sound morbid, but there is also a concept called 'Swedish Death Cleaning.' This is a decluttering method that encourages people to minimize their belongings to necessities to make it easier for their loved ones in the wake of their passing. More info here: www.tasteofhome.com/article/swedish-death-cleaning/ Hope this helps! 🙌🏻

Thank you for your video. Very good information. I also watched Connie Riet and she says she has a rule that if she sees something to buy in the shop she must wait 48 hours before buying it. I think that is also a great idea.

Hey Peter, I’ve just stumbled over a fierce discussion here in YT (which is running already for some years but I haven‘t noticed it yet). There seems to be like a hard fight for the labels ‚Minimalism‘ and ‚Essentialism‘. You talk about Minimalism (and I love it btw 😅). I wonder what you think of the difference to Essentialism and if it‘s just labels to you.
@IAmPeterCook Жыл бұрын
I sometimes I think the term ‘Minimalism’ is a misnomer and 'Essentialism' would be more accurate. To me, the lifestyle is not about owning an arbitrary minimum number of things, but about eliminating distractions and excess, so I can focus on the things that are truly important/essential. Ultimately though, I don't get stuck up on labels. I talked about the different definitions of minimalism here, btw: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n53UknWfmrGLmdE. I'm currently reading the book Essentialism, will definitely make a video about it at some point! 😀

Absolutely loved this Peter :) So true - Minimalism is a wonderful way to de-stress :) I've found it's made stressful phases of life far less overwhelming too :) Minimalism is wonderful and I wish it was something they taught in school. Thanks for sharing your video
