9:25 Whether it's specifically in the rule book or not, it is widely understood that if a high stick causes bleeding it is an automatic double minor penalty.
@CheapSeatsSports5 ай бұрын
True. The rules intentionally leave room for the officials to call what they see as fit for the situation and almost always blood means a double minor.

Great video and explanations. You read my mind by including the frequency of each penalty, that's a sign of a good communicator

14:32 Just a note for anyone confused about the delay of game penalties for the puck going over the glass: This is only a penalty if the puck goes directly from the players stick over the glass, without touching the boards, the glass, or another player, and it is *only if the play happens in the defensive zone*--even if where the puck actually goes out of play is not in that same defensive zone. For instance, last season the Canucks' Elias Pettersson was standing next to the net in the defensive zone and snapped the puck down the ice, it left his stick, and went out of play all the way on the other side of the rink, behind the other team's net. I've never seen anything like it, but it was, indeed, a penalty. (I think it was the March 2 2023 game against Minnesota, but I can't find any video of it).

As a new hockey fan your videos have made the sport so accessible for me!! I would love to see a video summarising the strengths and weaknesses of each NHL team 🏒
@CheapSeatsSports3 жыл бұрын
Glad you've found them to be helpful! I can try to incorporate strangths and weaknesses into videos, the problem tho is it changes season to seasons and for many team over the course of a season. I did a season predictions video that has some of that in it. A few teams are fairly consistent, the Oilers have incredible offense but ify defense, the predators have always been known for the opposite. The Islanders like to play shut down defense and jump on mistakes for scoring. Even Seattle has been hard to pin down tho, they have a defensively strong roster, but they've overall looked better on offense so far.

@@CheapSeatsSports that's great thanks!! I'm feeling drawn to the Pens 🐧 any thoughts on their strengths and weaknesses??
@CheapSeatsSports3 жыл бұрын
@@luciakingsland7892 good all around team. With players like Malkin, Crosby, Carter and Letang you can never count them out. The glaring weakness is health tho, all those players above are nearing the end of their careers and constantly battle injury issues (all have missed time this season already). Goaltending is decent, but not amazing and has let them down in the playoffs the last few years (especially last year).

7:53 high sticking over the crossbar is only when it leads to a goal. A player can high stick up to his shoulders to play the puck.

I see your Egdar Martinez street sign back there! Nice! Also I've always liked and kind of followed hockey but the one thing that always went over my head would be penalties. What do they look like, what's the enforcement, etc? I had to learn a lot as a football official there too. I had to practice recognizing them at full speed.
@CheapSeatsSports2 жыл бұрын
Even if you know the rules it still can take time to know what it looks like at game speed for some of them. Even once you do then there is the sometimes ify consistently in officiating, but like the NFL you get used to it. Edit: love Gar! Seattle hero!

Can you explain to us who are new to hockey (like most of us watching these videos!) what questionable refereeing that happened in the 2021 season that you intimated in the video?
@CheapSeatsSports3 жыл бұрын
Sorry, just saw this. There is a ton out there if you Google 2021 NHL ref issues or something like that but I'll give the basics. In the NHL there's a weird thing where refs will always try to keep penalties relatively even between teams (even if one is commiting more callable fouls). It was always kinda an unspoken thing never fully admitted to, but last season a ref got caught on a hot mic basically saying he was looking for a penalty as a make up call for a bad call earlier. This made people mad, so the NHL stepped in, which made the refs mad and they basically acted like children for the rest of the season (so like an MLB ump).

A few times through this playlist you have talked about the 200(5?) lockout will there be a video explaining this?

Yes, I will cover it when I get there in the history video series. It might be a little bit before that happens with the season starting up but it will happen.

Thank you for these videos! You do an amazing job explaining it and now I can watch it without asking my boyfriend what half of the penalties mean 😂

Glad to help! You'll get more used to it the more you watch too. Sometimes there is a difference in the rules and what actually gets called, as with any sport.

Are PIM counted as the number of minutes assessed for the penalty or the number of minutes actually served in the box? For example, if a player gets a 2 minute minor but the other team scores 30 seconds into their power play, would the player with the penalty have 2 mins added to their PIM stat, or 30 seconds? Thanks!
@CheapSeatsSports Жыл бұрын
Assessed. Also when there is a bench penalty like too many men on the ice no one is assessed PIM but someone still serves the penalty in the box.
@SophisticatedPickle Жыл бұрын
I have a question though. What is the difference between slashing and crosschecking? They sound almost exactly the same to me and it confuses me
@CheapSeatsSports Жыл бұрын
Slashing is more swinging the stick and often called when a player hits the hands of an opponent while trying to disrupt them handling the puck. Cross checking is when the stick is used like a bar with two hands far apart and shoved into an opponent, usually in the back. Hope that is helpful

Got called on a hooking where my stick got stuck between 3 people so I dropped my stick right away because it was not intentional, my stick got stuck.. Is that hooking?? Should you always hold on the stick or dropping the stick better option?
@CheapSeatsSports2 жыл бұрын
Based on how you described it that doesn't sound like hooking. I think dropping your stick is probably a good option, especially if it gets caught between legs so you don't cause tripping.

So wait me running into a guy while trying to stop as he backed up into me isn’t a penalty. Oh yea that also happened about 4 times after that and 2-3 before that penalty. I’ve also taken out the net and players before cause I suck at stopping and whoopty do no penalty cause there was effort to stop and I play rec.

Yeah there is always some difference between the rules and what is actually called, especially in rec leagues.
