A few updates after having seen the response to this video: 1. From the feedback I've gotten, Pokemon Unite is one of the less malicious Free-to-Play games in this genre. I still stand by the fact that it employs manipulative strategies to earn more from players, but in hindsight there were a few things I could have done to save me spending quite as much as I did. That said, I don't want this to take away from the key message of the video, which still stands and is still incredibly important. 2. Most of the shots in the video and screen recordings were sourced by my editor on my editors account, and so are more to demonstrate the points being made, as opposed to being representative of my own gameplay. 3. I've been informed that it is currently possible to upgrade an item to level 30 without paying real money in Pokemon Unite - this hasn't always been the case and isn't made clear to the player - it seems to be a limited time thing - but nonetheless an oversight on my part! 4. I am completely happy to admit that I am far from the best Pokemon Unite player. That said, while it is true that people with more skill can certainly get away with paying less, for the vast majority of the player base, paying is still the key legitimate way to make progress.

To be fair to the game you don't need those holowears (the fancy costumes for your Pokemon) to play the game. They don't boost any of your stats or affect gameplay in any way. Also once you obtain those level 20+ items you are pretty set because the game is actually quite skill based. I have been playing the game for about a year now and so far I spent only 9 dollars for the holowears in the battle pass (never once spent them buying the item enhancers), and I have gotten the "Master" rank (the highest rank tier in the game) for 4 out of 6 seasons now. Granted I am not saying the system is in any way a good system, but it's not as bad as it seems.

I played Unite on my Switch when it was first released. I never spend any real money, I ground out everything and leveled up everything. There is an amount of strategy involved in knowing each Pokémon's skills and abilities. Like I said, I never spent a single cent on the game, and I would still destroy people who clearly spent money on Pokémon and extra tidbits. They added a lot more inclusivity, with multiple new player bonuses and more free things at the start (such as the power to make three of your items fully levelled instantly). If you take advantage of those and still lose, you realise that maybe you’re not playing the game right and its about how you play. I'm glad people are pointing out the Pokemon Unite part. If this was actually one year ago, then you could see the argument like MoistCritikal's video, but Pokemon Unite has actually improved since then. Now they have free lvl 30 item enchancers you can get by just playing the game so your not behind on item levels. The only "predatory" thing in the game is arguably the skin and gacha mechanic with emblems. Skins are just skins and they dont affect stats. Emblems you can't just outright buy them. You have to earn them by consistently playing the game and doing good in those games. TLDR Pokemon Unite was not a good example for being Pay to win.
@JamesDaCostaMusic2 жыл бұрын
Moistcriticals video was also bullshit even back then. The major advantage from items comes at level 20 which you were able to get easily without paying even on the games release. The stat increases you get from lvl 20 to 30 are negligible and a complete non factor to having more success.

Yeah good video and can really relate, even if a game is getting slow the grinding is going, you don’t want to lose all the time and effort you put into it, so then you have to pay or you have to put even more time and effort, and if you aren’t on the paying side, you will ALWAYS be playing catch up, or they would have to keep really weak for a very long time to be strong one update like saving gems, the best option is to honestly just quit but it’s a really hard decision to make, they give free to play players like max rarity units who use to be good but a new max rarity character would be way way way better and maybe even non max rarity characters so you feel you got something good but in reality it’s nowhere close to the new stuff, I just quit all games like this and that’s why I was so sad overwatch closes yesterday, I legitimately don’t want to play overwatch 2 (I got overwatch preordered) and overwatch 2 locks so much behind levels and battle passes, all my friends want to try it but I can’t go from overwatch one which close to the 2nd game today because of that, I’m probably going to log in see it then just close the game for a really long time.

yeah i know right haha
@nobodywilleverknow83712 жыл бұрын
The ultimate anti consumer would be someone who doesn't play the game at all. As stated in the video, even if you don't spend, you are still providing the whales another player they can safely know beneath them, adding to their rush and making them play and spend more (as long as their is even the tiniest amount of competitiveness in the game, which most games have. Even just a simple leaderboard suffices. Being first out of ten thousand feels way better than being first out of ten, even if 9990 of the other players don't really play the game at all. The number is still there). I just want to say that I have got into Master Rank in Pokémon Unite without spending a single dollar ever, not even on skins. I don't think that it's pay to win as it's showed in this video, they usually gift A LOT of Licenses and items to enchance Items to lvl 30 for free. Lately they have been letting you get new Pokémon without paying but by making daily missions. Also, the weekly coin limit is really high, specially compared with other free mobile games, so you can get a lot of skins and items just by playing. I do hate that they try to push you that much into buying stuff, though, but that's just 21th century consumism.

There are definitely mobile games out there that are p2w, but Pokémon Unite isn't one of them. Certainly you can spend money to get new Pokémon, but you can also farm the coins to aquire them as a f2p. Most people spend money on the cosmetics which has no bearing on the stats of the Pokémon. Buying new Pokémon or those cosmetics also have no impact on the gameplay. That is entirely skill-based and tries strongly on your team (if were all working together, etc). I'm F2P and if I do spend money, it's just gonna be for the Unite Membership, some cosmetics and/or some Pokémon... and that's if I choose to. Even if I don't choose to, I don't feel like I'm behind other players (unlike other mobile games) and it's nice.

He's not saying Pokémon unite is P2W but P2P, pay to progress, again his take on the game is from the perspective of a newbie player, hence exactly the perfect target for the developer and their monetisation system, experienced F2P obviously won't fall for it and ofc the game isn't blatantly unfair, it still matches you with bots occasionally, but getting into the competitive leagues is very very difficult for F2P, as someone with almost 10 years of experience with gacha, nothing he said in the video is wrong about the monetisation nor the tactics used

It just requires skill (I.e. knowing your Pokémon and what it can and can't do) and decent teammates. And yes, it will be a bit slow in upgrading your held items if you're full f2p (as it is for me), but again... I'm at Veteran rank working my way to Ultra. So I'm progressing fine.

@@Hhhh22222-w that’s the thing. Unite was a bad example because it is not P2W or P2P at all. It is a MOBA. I’ve worked 6 yrs in the online gambling industry. All the concepts discussed were disco and first used in online gambling. Sign up bonuses to break the barrier is essential to the acquisition strategy. Push towards slots with high volatility (small wins but much more often) gets you hooked on the reward stimulation and perception that the big win (like levelling up quick but the level you want to be is so far and impossible) that only whales really get. The concept of in-game currency comes from buying tickets for tournaments in the casino. This was developed in the 90s. I think I made my point in how the mobile gaming system is literally and purposefully designed based on the online gambling industry. The difference I think is most important is that online gambling has regulations in place. There are companies that monitor and reign in industry. Even worse, the mobile gaming industry is aimed at children and is much more sinister in fostering addiction than online gambling could ever be.

I know for a fact but cannot prove (or have anybody to ask for help proving this, can't call the police like you would do if any other crime was happening to you) a mobile game I have been playing over six years changes drop rates on items as they see fit. This is false advertisement in any other business pretty much around the world I would think.?? False advertising is illegal and know for a fact some have been caught with no real consequence for doing it. We need laws and someone who goes into these gaming apps and makes sure devs are being honest & KEEPING them honest. I think the points made are real and important, but the Unite example isn't the best one. Unite is very F2P friendly, handing out a lot of things for new playes to start at a similar item level to other players. Another game you could have covered that would have made more sense imo is Genshin Impact. A lot of the points made can easily be translated to Genshin, and a lot more people spend a lot more money in it. Overall, great video topic, it's important that people know that most free games are designed to make you spend. Edit : to rephrase a little more, the point of this comment was to say that Genshin Impact is a better and more pertinent example as to how a game makes you spend since it has made an insane amount of money for a free game.

This video hits me SO hard. Unfortunately, I have an addictive personality and I'm extremely impatient and simply cannot abide grinding for something unless there is immediate rewards. What I'm saying is, I need to be the strongest player, but I don't have the patience to grind my way to the top. About 10 years ago, I fell into an MMO (I honestly can't remember the name). The first "mission" (tutorial) gave me a taste of what was to come and the second mission made it seem like I should be able to take down these monsters easily! In the 3rd mission, I got my ass kicked and went back to the character page with my tail betwixt my legs. I tried everything I could to get strong enough without money but, in the long run, I knew my toon would be a weakling without spending a little money.. At that time, I had just opened a company that had an incredibly successful launch and, if projections were correct, I expected a very strong trend for several months. In other words, I had (what seemed to me to be) a ridiculous amount of disposable income! I decided I was going to pay to win! I bought the best armor and the highest ranking spells (I was a sorcerer). I then tried a daily group mission and realized there were toons stronger than I was! Back to the store! I purchased multiple pieces of armor so I could meld them and get a higher level armor. I purchased multiple spells and combined them to make stronger spells. With my new "disposable" income, I became one of the top 5 players on my server within just a month of playing. I was the guy everyone wanted on their team. I was the guy people begged to join the server-wide attack on the incredibly high ranking beastie. Everyone on my server knew who I was and I was loving it! Any time I found my toon not up to a task, I headed back to the store to buy whatever I could to increase my stats. After about 2 months, Jackie (the person I had hired as the bookkeeper for the company) approached me. It seems she was confused about numerous charges, to some company that didn't match any of our suppliers. I told her "Yeah, I know it's stupid but I've been playing this game and I've spent a little money on it. Just take it out of my next couple of checks". When she told me I wouldn't be getting a paycheck for the next 4 months, that got my attention. Jackie showed me list of charges ranging from $10 to $100. I thought I had spent around 4 or 5 thousand dollars but, in light of my new income, I wasn't worried about it. Jackie literally laughed in my face when she heard me say $5k. She then handed me a sheet of paper of charges, filling the entire page. I focused on the bold number circled in red at the bottom right of the sheet and was dumbfounded by the number printed there. $12,470! Yes. I spent $12,000 on a stupid fucking online game in about 2 months! Lemme say that again. I FUCKING SPENT TWELVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ON AN ONLINE GAME...IN TWO MONTHS! Yes. I know. I'm an idiot. I'm not an idiot because I spent the money. I'm an idiot because I didn't see the flaw in the "pay to win" mentality until I had already lost my mind. Unless I had literally a limitless fortune, there would always be someone willing to spend more money to be better than me. It's crazy how quickly $10-$100 charges will accrue! So, realizing my addiction had blown past the "unmanageable" phase and was firmly in the "idiots do this" realm, I contacted a friend from that game and literally gave them my character and walked away from that game, and those like it, forever. Be careful about the "store" page of these games! It's way easy to justify one payment, but after you've paid once, you feel obliged to do it again because you're already invested. Then when you find something you can't do because you're one level short, it's way too easy to simply pay for that upgrade. Now that you've paid for that upgrade, it doesn't make sense to stop now or you've wasted all that money! So you buy more. And more. And more. I know many people can see through the scam and just play the game without paying for anything, but those games wouldn't exist if there wasn't plenty of people willing to spend their hard earned money on intangible, digital merchandise. One purchase is all it takes to start the cycle. If you're able to resist, great! For those with addictive personalities, like myself, it's probably best to stay away from these kinds of games.

Speaking as indie dev and one who moderately get into those kind of games, unfortunately these types of games *flourish* on the mobile game market, and they flourish HARD. Based on my findings from mobile gamer buddies, many mobile players are dissuaded by the idea of paying $30 for a premium single player game with content you expect from PC/console games, but they willing to spend more than $70 to for an uncertain gacha item (and some games would practically cost thousands of dollars for pity system). Free to play players would pay in time of timely rewards and grind. Mobile game market sucks for design ideology expected from PC/console game space and the old timey shenanigans, and unfortunately market crash for it is not in sight.

Like, in a game with a prize wheel, there's tiny hard to see text that says "odds discloser" and if you click on it, it'll give you odds of getting each prize on the wheel. Sometimes it's in the settings. That's a good thing to look for when you're considering spending money to try to win a specific item.

And that's what makes it respectable that he still tries to advocate for average consumers with regard to things like this or right to repair.

I miss just playing games. Where I buy a game for like 2.99 -4.99 and I just own the game and can play and redownload it later . Never ending games are crazy. Separately I love the editing and production on this vid. The funds you guys have dropped on the LED and monitors and such are so cool. The color coordination makes these even more enjoyable to watch.

It's sad to see where video games are going. It's now more about the social validation, and the need to get that one limited item rather than having fun playing it. And the more people buy stuff, the more these companies are going to push these practices. Thank you Arun, for putting this out.

The ONLY thing in unite you can spend money on in unite for an actual advantage is buying new Pokémon. (Which can be acquired for free later with work) . I agree with the premise of the video, but Unite is absolutely the worst example you could have picked. Their gotcha mechanic is pretty much just cosmetics & the battle pass (which is a decent deal compared to many other f2p games). I’ve spent maybe 15 dollars at most on the game after playing it for nearly a year on purely cosmetic things. In many other games by the end of the week you can feel pressured to spend 100 dollars at the end of one week to advance. Unite has many problems, but pay to win isn’t one of them.

The issue is, taking Diablo Immortal as an example, when the game was launched, it received horrendous feedback due to their monetization and was slammed on Metacritic with the lowest user score ever for a game. Afterwhich tons of media coverage and KZbinrs taking about this and publications and forums were flooded with this topic. Fast forward to 2 months ago, Diablo Immortal still made 97million in August. The moral of the story is, players know what they are getting into and they still knowingly play the game. Due to this, the industry isn't going to change anytime soon I am afraid.

Problem is he went after the wrong target. You can easily progress fast and be very competitive for free in Pokemon Unite, and what made it worse is he was trying to progress with one of the worst characters in the game - Charizard, whose early game Charmander and Charmeleon are trash.
@pyanek2 жыл бұрын
@@darthraider450 I think you're focusing on the wrong aspect of the video. The practices Arun talks about are all over the game industry, it's a common business model. He just used some games as examples, and he didn't say it was a practice specific to pokemon unite. Also, even if you can progress in the game for free, it doesn't change the fact that they employ all these tactics to subconsciously manipulate people.

Honestly i seriously think games need to be regulated when it comes to things like this. Its basically gambling, if gambling has rules and regulations so should these games. Especially games that have a duplication system or have items thats are ridiculously hard to obtain. Thank you for bringing light into this conversation.
@DiamondRoller372 жыл бұрын
A loot box/gacha system is really just a differently designed slot machine if you think about it: both are based on the random (and usually relatively small) chance to obtain the one best item/reward. Both have smaller rewards that don't make the big one obsolete but give your brain enough serotonin to keep going
@abbilyshidou32292 жыл бұрын
@@DiamondRoller37 if you think about it, there's nothing stopping you from playing another game if you hate their lootbox rates so much. I don't play Genshin impact anymore because I hate their gacha rates from the perspective of a f2p. It doesn't meet my personal standards so I don't play the game. I know there are better games where I love not just the game but also the community and the development company behind everything. These games have rates that are so much better the games are only really "gacha" in name. Imagine a game where a f2p player can acquire every single character ever released completely for free, staying competitive against all but the whales in a competitive setting that only exists so that the game can entice at least SOME people to spend money. Difference between top-ranked and participation-only players are marginal, maybe you get to fully level a character in 10 weeks instead of 12 but at that level of progression, the top scorers already have everything maxed so they are only spending because they love every aspect of the game. In such a game, these "whales" or "leviathans" are absolutely necessary elsewise the game literally wouldn't make any money due to how lenient its so-called gacha system is. TL:DR - as an sentient human being you have the option of thinking for yourself and abstaining (at the minimum) from practices that do not meet your standards.
@DiamondRoller372 жыл бұрын
@@abbilyshidou3229 My favorite mobile game is Battle Cats for this reason. It is definitely gacha-oriented but by playing as long as it takes to exhaust your energy once or twice every day you get enough resources to get enough cat units to easily progress as a f2p. You can always pay money to get better cars easier but you never feel like you have to grind hundreds of hours or spend thousands of dollars for anything (except maybe true form but even then you just need to specifically grind for a little bit).
@nobodywilleverknow83712 жыл бұрын
I think it is a legislation problem, because most of these companies sit in countries that don't really care about these kinds of things. And the only thing the "consumer countries" could do as far as I know would be to just ban the game. And since there are millions of games and probably thousands being added every day, that is probably not possible, so the only thing they could do would be banning the whole play store... So yeah, it is a really difficult system to intervene in, this whole internet currency, online banking and what-not thing are real big issues for the legislation, wherever you are.

@kaecatlady2 жыл бұрын
No, they won't. As @Jotaro Kujo pointed out, the richer these companies get, the more the governments that should be policing them will get rich, too. They have little real incentive, and even less political will, to do anything a out the gaming industry's increasingly slimely tactics. The EU has made a few attempts to curb these companies' scammy behaviors, but these companies have enough money--and we're already aware of their manipulative chops--to just buy in "politicians" who will soften or eliminate those rules. Government intervention *can* help slow the deepening of this disease, but the only way these practices will ever truly stop is when the players themselves stop allowing it... by walking AWAY from these developers and their games as soon as they get the smallest whiff of the bullshit coming off of them. But that, unfortunately, will first require those players (whatever their apparent biological ages) to grow up and rezlize that these sorts NEVER give up real freebies. Sadly, I'm not at all sanguine about that happening any time soon.
